    Les Gourmandises

Was in there last night for the first time & enjoyed it. They have a deal for €45, consisting of a tapas sharing plate, 2 main courses & 2 small glasses of wine.

Tapas were chicken pate, parma ham, pork terrine, fish in breadcrumbs & salmon pate.
Mains were a choice of sea bream or roast chicken.
Wine was a choice of red or white :-)

Only downside on this deal is the lack of choice but everything was tasty & good for the price I think. If you do want more wine though it costs about €8.50 per glass. Overall good experience.

€45 in total, for 2 people?
    That sounds really cheap.
    They must be struggling

OR, you get a complimentary microscope to see the portions ! ;)

Considering a main course alone is €20+, €45 for what we got is cheap. We got extra wine so total bill was €65.
Struggling? That deal might suggest that alright but was busy enough last night.
They have this offer on Tuesday to Thursday until 9.30 & on Fridays until 7.

had dinner in the Oyster Tavern yesterday - v impressed - lovely decor, great staff and food... we had to sit at a smaller table than planned as our original table had not been vacated.. so we got a bottle of prosecco on the house... twas a nice gesture.
How was the food here? I heard the chef Kate from Fenn's Quay was in here now, and hoped to god the menu has improved. It was like chipper food the last time we were there.

    Haha portion size was fine.

I guess the lack of choice is one reason they can offer this kind of value. Plus they’ll make money when people buy an overpriced glass of wine.

Was in Cafe Mexicana last night. I thought it was recommended here a while back, maybe not....

Anyway, it was pretty bad. Like cheap european holiday resort bad....
I had wings to start, OH had jalepeno "poppers". Asked for the wings extra hot, obviously this couldn't be accommodated as they came straight from a packet. The "poppers" were slices of jalepeno out of a jar coated in some sort of salty batter.

Mains fish tacos. Sauce was nice, fish didnt taste fresh tho. I'm not saying it was off, but it was out of a tin/blister pack. Again asked for extra hot, no spice there at all really...
OH had a vegetarian chimichanga. The veg was literally your standard frozen "country veg"!

    !

Not sure they have a kitchen. Just a freezer and a microwave for heating stuff up. Nothing is fresh and suspicious that no requests for any modifications can be accommodated.

yeah we found the food v good - one had a steak which was devoured, the chicken dish was v popular and v well liked.. "most succulent chicken they have ever had", and few did have scampi and chips and salad but the chips were v good - with skins on.. i have a chicken salad and the chicken was marinated and bbq'd which was lovely.. deserts were ok - flourless chocolate cake etc.. good wine menu - great service.. I would recommend

Likewise. Ramen is taking over, and is ok, but IMO Wagamamas was a lot better/lighter/healthier.

Might give that a go. I'll make a booking @ 8, you book for 9:30, I'll take my time and we'll split the Prosecco? Deal!

Been in there for a daytime drink (downstairs) and it's nice. Amazingly soft, plush seats (you really sink down into them. aaaaaah...). But I didn't look at the restaurant upstairs.

I usually dine alone (bring in a book, a nice glass of wine or two..) Is it the kind of place you can do that? In some restaurants, they don't like singletons taking up a table for two; or if you get one, they're almost shuffling you out the door as soon as you get the food. Whereas I'm usually quicker than a typical couple/group since there's no chatting.

It looks like an absolute kip from the outside, but Malay Kitchen on the corner just up from where Wagamama was is good.

Never would have gone in there myself only for my sister brought me.

    ha ha...

i doubt there would be a problem dining alone - not sure what such a place would look like.. but going by how professional the staff are, I can't see any issue

actually i didn't really look around down stairs... was escorted up stairs as soon as I arrived..

But I think that there was a big screen with a game on - i wonder if this is the norm? i don't like bars with big tv screens showing sports.. though this was a sat eve when i was there - maybe it was a once off - perhaps there was a big game on

    WOW Burger

Whats the verdict on this place?

People here seem to like it.
I didn't think there was great flavour from the patties but I did like the fact that their standard burger is 2 thinner patties rather than one thick one.

This should be standard practise. Maximise surface area for the crust / carmelisation.

Also easier to cook to the required temperature and not totally dry out.

I thought wow burger was awful. No flavour from the meat and it was dry too. West Cork Burger or Bunsen have the nicest burgers, IMO.

It was the lack of flavour was my problem, too. I wouldn't say awful, though.
I haven't tried West Cork yet but I'm a big fan of the bunsen despite the patties being pretty thick - but they don't overcook them.

I've found Wowburger to be very tasty any time I've been. Never would have though to describe it as "dry", but that's just my experience.

Thanks - I had to look it up. Is that where Hoggie's takeaway used to be? I think I'd be like yourself, I wouldn't try it unless it looked bright/clean/impressive from the outside.

When my brother and his wife come to visit from Australia soon I'm going to treat them to a nice meal in the city. I was going to consider the Ivory Tower but would be open to other suggestions . Elbow lane is in my thinking too

Think so yeah, it's beside Fast Al's just on the corner of South Main Street and Castle Street.

They do some chips and burgers and wings etc., I haven't tried that side of the menu but they look good.

Lovely lovely tofu dishes and edamame beans, everything is made fresh to order so if you like things extra spicy, less spicy or whatever they'll adjust it. Seems more of a specific cuisine than the kind of pan-Asian style Wagamama was (Malaysian I guess :pac:) but it's a good replacement for that lighter healthier buzz, I know what you mean about Ramen in that regard.

Haven't tried WCB, Son of a Bun is the best I've had by far

There is a Restaurant recommendation thread stickied in this sub forum which might prove helpful.

However, Elbow Lane is fantastic. :D
