Are you really saying that attacks of such a serious nature where one is hospitalised from being attacked with a baseball bat and another armed Garda is bitten by a dog wouldn't get reported in the newspaper?

    Regularly

While I don't want to make a blanket statement about all assaults on Gardai, bubblypop is right to a degree. This is in the media because others saw it. Most of the assaults on members happen behind closed doors where the general public don't see it, so it doesn't get reported to the media.

Source: I was a Garda for 10 years.

Would an assault as serious as this really be brushed under the rug? I mean they had to retreat. That is as bad as it can get without someone being killed for a police force I would have thought.

I just think it’s ironic that the left is so right-on. Seriously, talking about censorship and lack of commentary when it’s a home grown dirt bag and emphasising crimes when it’s a group of ethnic extraction. Give it a rest.

Armed gardai called in and then have to retreat, so them being armed made no differnce whatsoever.
I think what you mean is that armed Gardai are appropriately trained to only fire their weapons when absolutely necessary. Unlike armed police in some other countries who are trained to fire once a threat refuses to comply with a command.

You'll also find that the nature of some armed units are that they will detain a suspect and then allow another unit to carry out an arrest, leaving the armed unit to leave quietly and never have to reveal their identity in arrest documents or court statements.

Given the choice between a Garda shooting making the national news and happening once, maybe twice a year in Ireland; versus 3 fatal police shootings every day in the US, I know which I'd pick.

Carrickmines is worrying , I thought that was part of the southside, is it still safe to go shopping there?

It's not that it is brushed under the rug, it's just not reported to the media by AGS.
This was clearly seen by many people & AGS, had to report on it.
Regularly happens that gardai have to retreat from situations, particularly in the country, & wait for back up.

It’s in the media because it was in broad daylight with loads of witnesses and it was especially barbaric and brazen. Bubbypop is talking pony about incidents like this happening all the time going unreported or not commented on because the perpetrators are gone grown. While I think the OP has an agenda, bubbly pop is pushing one just as much from the other side.

Bubblypop, never said they aren't reported on because they are Irish & well you know it.

No there is gangs at the entrance with guns and they only let people in they know. If they don't know you they bag your head and dump you in a hole.

I had a customer last week. She was Swiss with a Norwegian mother and a Nigerian father. She's an architect who has lived in lots of countries around the world. She said SA was the most openly racist country she's been in. I took it she meant white on black racism- nope, wrong. Black against Nigerian- she was even told that when on night out to change or not mention her surname, if she was to use her indentifiably Nigerian name it could lead to trouble.
She spent a year in SA using a French name and a Senegalese back story.

That got me looking up news items of attacks and prejudices in SA on Nigerians. Some serious problems there with Nigerian/SA relationships.

What happened in this case could not be regular occurrence. If it was the Gardai would all be armed to the teeth. I just find it hard to believe the Gardai are retreating on the regular.

Why? Pretty standard procedure. If you are outnumbered you fall back and wait for back up. Gardaí travel in pairs after all.

That is not the same thing. Two Gardai, I assume, would call backup in before tackling a suspected drug dealers house not after. Then if they were being beaten back by baseball bats the beanbag shotgun would make an appearance. I refuse to believe this is a common occurrence in Ireland.

Beanbag shotgun? Where are you getting this?

I remember hearing a story about 15 years ago about a pub on Parnell street, and some Nigerian gang went in looking for protection money, so the lads working there told them no managers are in - come back later.

So they got a bunch of local heavies armed up and waiting for the Nigerians to return - and battered the **** outta them when they did .... don't think it would be so straight forward now.

And I know it's criminal v criminal, but always loved the story, nice poetic justice to it.

The park rangers in the phoneix park are issued these I always though the garda had access to them as well. If they dont then tazer, mace whatever nonlethal weapons they have been issued.

Used to visit a friend who lived near there.

Drank in the Welcome Inn near by.

Africans/Nigerians had a club near by wanted to muscle in on the locals.

Jesus they wrecked the Africans pub/club.

Course the media at the time where pushing the "picking on the blacks"....

Why cant we all get along!

What amazes me is, its so hard to get into the US/Australia, yet we have so, so many Nigerians....how?

The Blue Lion and the welcome inn were both big time IRA pubs, you wouldnt see an ounce of trouble in either. But if you came looking for it you would get destroyed, as the africans found out.

    Pepper spray and a baton.

Well there is a major problem in and of itself. They should be better equipped to handle violent altercations. Maybe even more intensive training on using the baton. HEMA or whatever the modern equivalent is. I don't like that our front line of defence seems to be under prepared/equipped. This should be bigger news.

It's constantly being said by the GRA.

We're back to a couple of the old problems here, under-resoursed and badly equipped Gardai. A lack of deterrent within the justice system for these types of crimes. A lack of respect for Gardai and a knowledge that you can actually batter a Guard in this country with a bat and receive damn all punishment. A lack of intel on the Guards side when they went to this house in the first place.

There is actually an increase I believe in Gardai retreating from violent situations. I was horrified to hear of these particular situations in Mayo last year. The first incident involved Irish people, the second Eastern Europeans. It is pointless arguing that people should be deported. The appeals system ensures that this cannot happen.

    http://www.mayonews.ie/news/29890-gardai-under-attack-in-south-mayo

Until the justice system ensures that ALL violent crime is rewarded with long custodial sentences we have plenty more of this to look forward to.

I would say your agenda is that you want foreign criminals shipped backed out to where they came from. Would that be accurate?

But the gardai specifically given fire arms are afraid have a strict protocol as how to use them, as in this case for example.

Being assaulted and receiving hits to the head with a baseball bat, or witnessing this happening to a third person, allows anyone to use any force that is necessary to stop the assault. Including threat or application of deadly force.

The cops might get their heads beaten in and for what thanks... feckall!

Wasnt yer man released without charge.

Then their is always the chance of the cops getting investigated for wading in too heavily, what were they doing there in the first place, accusations of racism etc etc

Not worth the hassle I'd say.

It's constantly being said by the GRA.

Nothing is said by the GRA. The last time they were in the news it was because they were being investigated for corruption. The findings wanted it completely overhauled.

This is a huge problem that is seen everywhere. People lining their pockets while the frontline suffer.
