Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We will probably be waiting a good while to get our hands on WHYRED

Was verify a link on reddit for someone and found this message on Fantasy aliexpress store.
    .....
For friends who had bought Redmi Note 5 global version (3+32GB/4+64GB) in our store. We are very sorry to inform you about the long processing time of it. We will start the delivery of Redmi Note 5 at the end of April.
As known, this cellphone comes to market with a high-quality SOC - Snapdragon 636. But we just got informed by Xiaomi Company that this new type of chip in Snapdragon company has a productivity limitation, so the productivity of this cellphone has also been limited.
    ....

@jlynch, I believe @GBX was just posting a joke comment, and was hoping we could get it soon as possible. I had posted on and pulled info from that thread and shared here.

Had not planned on purchasing myself till the summer, end of June or start of July.

A competitor to this device has also been announced Asus ZenFone Max Pro (M1)

    Yeah I was joking! ::D

I may have to look elsewhere for a new device sooner .. I'll see. Really hoped to get this as I'm using a friend's OnePlus 2 since I dropped my other phone.

How come I'd be better off with that over a note 5 or 4?

Should have said I meant it as an alternative specifically for the note 4 (if you didnt want to wait for the note 5 to be released) due to the fact its newer has a better camera gets regular updates and has stock android.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro - Blind camera comparison

As already reported in main china thread WHYRED has the better camera, see for yourself above.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 images, specifications leaked online

ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 preview

^^^ Links to post's in the main thread, for anyone who has not read it.

Even with the Asus device been cheaper, think I will still get WHYRED.

I just don't like the look of the Asus. That's enough to put me off it. Could be a very fine phone but I don't think it would grow on me.

Obviously EU direct shops wont have it for a while, so have to decide where to (pre) order and which route to take.
Would shipping via parcel motel and the likes be of any benefit to getting it sooner?

Would parcel Motel not slow it down by a day or two as it will have to detour to the UK then NI?

Possibly - I was thinking given it would possibly go through sorting there anyway and could get through without taking a hit on vat. Im budgeting for it anyway.

don't parcel motel refuse to take delivery at their centre if UK customs are looking for money?

As people are listing places to purchase......

Hong Kong Goldway on aliexpress have correct listings with band 20: -

    4/64gb - Standard with case - €215.87 + €21.59 DHL shipping.

    3/32gb - Standard with Case - €186.81 + €21.59 DHL shipping.

Note: - Goldway are not promoting DHL Vat free shipping on the above items, so don't know if it still applies.

Mi Global Store have inflated prices at present for global version.

that's what was always said on forums in any case - parcel motel don't have a process for it - too messy for them. so definitely keep it in mind - wouldn't end well I imagine - could end up stuck in limbo with UK customs.

the redmi note 4 is still a good phone with great battery life - some bargains to be had now

    https://www.eglobalcentral.eu/xiaomi-redmi-note-4-32gb-4g-dual-sim-grey-international-spec..html

126 euro delivered for the 32gb version - which is fine for most people imo - certainly enough to install plenty of apps in conjunction with a cheap sd card. (as apps even when on external card still use internal space and some can't be put on external card).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,301 ✭✭✭✭gerrybbadd

And avoid the Mediatek version of the Redmi Note 4 at all costs.

I have this instead of the Snapdragon version, and the battery life is crap

So does the Note 5/5 Pro have a 20mp or 13mp front camera? Its 20mp according gsm arena and android authority sites.

And is the only difference between global and non global the extra bands?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,015 ✭✭✭✭GBX

    According to http://www.mi.com/id/redmi-note-5/specs/

    12mp + 5mp front camera
    13mp selfie camera

The Redmi Note 5 Pro [India], only available in India, has a 20mp front camera.

The Redmi Note 5 [China] has different and better cameras than the Indian version.

The Global version (no listing for it on gsmarena as yet) is the same as the China version, just with extra bands.

Yes that is the China Version, but if your not in a rush to purchase, I would still wait about a month or so for global version.

You future proof your device by getting one with Band 20. Your needs might change/switch network that supports it.

I have been using my Kenzo (without band 20) for the last two years. Living in a city. Only thing that it might have effect on is battery drain searching/establishing a LTE connection. << Unfounded theory of mine.

As far as i can see there is no difference for gearbest where you ship from.

You will still probably be caught for VAT on delivery. Boardies tend not to like gearbest because of the shilling that use to be done on the forums.

If your order from the below link, it is clearly marked as Global Version with Band 20 in description.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 4G Phablet Global Version - BLACK 258689901
4GB RAM 64GB ROM Dual Rear Cameras Bluetooth 5.0 Fingerprint Recognition 4000mAh Battery

I mentioned it matter where you ship from if using Geekbuying, before in the thread. If unsure send Gearbest a message to clarify.

I've ordered a Note 5 plus from Geekbuying and had I shipped from Spain. All going well until I got an email this morning saying that the parcel has been "Retained in Customs".

I thought the whole point of shipping it from Spain was to avoid Customs or was I mistaken?

Package from the EU can still be checked by customs for fake/counterfeit goods.

You may need to provide proof of purchase, but still not have to pay VAT. Are you sure you order from an EU warehouse?

This thread might have better feedback, from others who have used Geekbuying.

Reddit wiki doesn't recommend that seller: -
Geekbuying - Reportedly unremovable reseller ROMs, fake stock information, unreliable shipping, bad support
    .

Why you decided to post in this thread for a different device than what the thread is about it, is another thing.

Price increase of Redmi Note 5 Pro in India!

    https://twitter.com/XiaomiIndia/status/990871304634068993

Hopefully it doesn't have an effect on the China/Global Variations.

I was hoping for prices to stabilize and possibly drop, not rise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,015 ✭✭✭✭GBX

The increase is not huge - INR 1,000 = €12+- at todays rate. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Lads, i couldn't wait for a new phone any longer, and went with the Mi A1.

Fairly happy with it overall. To be honest, I miss MIUI though. Especially the quickball feature

Is there much difference between the two phones?

The Mi A1 is just a rebranded Mi 5X i think.

Other than the stock android experience, there's not much difference hardware wise.

The A1 differs from the Redmi Note 5 a fair bit - screen size being one of the more obvious things. The A1 is a 16:9, 5.5 inch screen, whereas the RN5 is almost 6 inches at 18:9

Get MIUI's 'Quick Ball' Navigation Gestures on Any Android

    ^^^ Instructions for this app.

Glad I'm in no rush to purchase, it confuses me though why people go for weaker processor of the Mi A1 over WHYRED or even Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 (which is reported to have global bands).

Thanks for that - I already have it installed. It's not near as good as the quickball. You can't minimise it off to the side of the screen. You can hide it in the notification bar, but it's there... constantly.... notifying you!

Also, the ability to lock apps using your fingerprint. MIUI has so many great features. I'm using an app called AppLock for this, but again, it lives in the notification bar
