Signed up so can use BBC iPlayer thank you all. Am a total newbie to this so can anyone tell me how to get it to work with Virgin router and Windows 10 pc please?

I downloaded app and connected to the BBC player server but then lose internet connection so assume I need to do something with router? Or maybe not?

If I get this and run it on my phone. Would this save my data usage from my bill provider seeing as it is using a VPN? Or am I mistaken?

don't see how- it is still essentially downloading to your phone to stream/ dl direct

As an update, I bought this mini router from Amazon last week:

Connected it to my existing eir router (which is in bridge mode already) and set it up as a separate network.

I then got the VPN Unlimited OpenVPN for BBC iPlayer settings from here:

I followed the instructions to get the VPN Unlimited OpenVPN files onto the router here:

I now have a VPN network that I have a Humax Satellite Box and an Amazon Firestick connected to permanently. I can connect on demand from any other device and have access to BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, Demand5 without having to do any fiddling about!!

Yes it needs to be plugged in, either using a normal socket or a USB port.

I had followed those installation and BBC iplayer instructions on day 1 but no luck then because there was a section on routers I thought I had to do something on that. My router is screwed to the wall and I could not see any model mentioned on the view-able sides so asked here. However somehow or another I could access BBC iplayer successfully yesterday (maybe because of a few reboots).

Browsing UK version of websites was painfully slow but the BBC iplayer video did not seem slow. Will try it out properly this evening.

My question is how do you get it on 5 devices -its on laptop how do i transfer it to other devices and also could i share it with friends if i dont have 5 devices to put it on

Yes from the eir modem. My set up is that I have the eir F1000 modem/router which I have in bridge mode. Connected to this through ethernet is an Apple Time Capsule which acts as the main router for most of the internet connected devices in the house.

I connected the new mini router by ethernet into another port on the eir router and set it up from there as a separate network with its own SSID/password using VPN Unlimited permanently. Any device in the house can connect to this on demand and access UK services. However I have a Humax hdr-1100s satellite box and an Amazon Firestick full time accessing this second network. I am able to use BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub and Demand5 as if I was sitting in central London.

Speeds for the mini router are not stellar but most devices connect between 10-12 Mbps which is perfectly fine for streaming catch-up services. It has been handy this week to use the iPlayer to stream the snooker on the 'Red Button' on the satellite box.

A secondary benefit is that the VPN Unlimited 5 device limit licence is meaningless as I only really need one on the router.

Thats fascinating, I have tried to do this with many various routers etc over the years and couldn't find any product that works

I think the key issue is to put the modem/router into bridge mode. As the F1000 has four ethernet ports on the back, having it in bridge mode just makes it work like a dumb modem as a means of connecting to the ISP. I thought that pretty much every router would work the same?

so you have 2 router devices then giving out IP addresses? It seems from the amazon page, that you could simply connect into any modem not in bridge mode and it acts as some form of wireless access point.

Yes two routers creating separate networks sharing the same modem and single ISP.

I *think* that for the VPN to work it must be on its own SSID/network rather than simply acting as an access point as otherwise the DHCP will be sourced directly from the ISP and thus will be Irish. I could be wrong though!! I'm not a networking expert but can cobble stuff together in a pinch!!

The mini device can act as a router, an access point, a wifi repeater or simply as a modem in its own right in certain circumstances.

I'd say you might be wrong there as its no different to using VPN on your PC. All traffic for a firestick goes through the mifi which uses the VPN. It does obviously go through the normal IP address of the modem but the DHCP is all internal IP addresses anyways, its the external/VPN one thats the main thing.

You are most likely right. However as there is no VPN Unlimited client for an Apple Time Capsule or Airport Extreme product, I had no way to put the VPN Unlim. settings directly on the router. As the network settings on the Humax box are locked down (you can only connect to an existing network with no manual configuration option), a second network using the travel router from Amazon using OpenVPN settings was the most efficient solution.
