Once discounts get over a certain level there’s always a sales manager who gives the nod or not past a certain point, it just so happens that the guy who owns the dealership in this case works there so he’s around to ok stuff. I once got €5,000 off a 335 in Joe Duffy and the sales guy went off and I actually had to deal directly with the sales manager then.

    Ps I was a lazy f**k in school ;)

In fairness, I know we give out about lousy trade in offers and high prices with little discount but when you think about the size of some of these garages and the over heads that go with them to keep the show on the road it must be hard.
There’s 45 odd working in the Athlone BMW dealership. I wouldn’t like to see the wages bill and we know it’s not cheap to do anything in Ireland in business.

No doubt, you pay for the privilege of dealing with a main dealer. In your case there was some benefit to the dealer setup in that you could back to back compare the different engine versions etc but too many of the main dealers now don't seem to keep a stock of options like that.

Just thinking about my own want to change I think I'm going to stick in the buy private for cash sell privately price range.
Rules out a few of my options, 330e, 640d which leaves me with either an older 635d or an early f10 from the cars I want and can afford to buy in cash. Kind of 13-15k range. Early f10 is probably going to happen maybe a 530d from UK or a petrol one if I can find one. Resale price after a few years will then be in the grasp of a big market privately.

I'm probably happy to do this to be honest, I like the idea of buying cars I really loved when they were new and expensive for a small percentage of new price.

Ok, off to autotrader.co.uk with me!!

Just be wary of cheap F10s, a mate got a 2011 for €14,000 but has dropped €3,000 into it since he got it on pads, Discs, arms, timing chain - obviously if you go for a 6 cylinder the chain won’t be an issue but the other wear and tear will. A decent 635d should be well in budget, I got €18,000 for a mint 90,000kms one a year ago.

Yep, they used their address when registering the car and I changed it to mine this morning when I taxed it. I was chatting to the sales manager today while they were fuelling my car before I hit the road. He was saying that with a limited customer base for a 3.0 d sticking a D reg on it was a wise move.

Found them very easy to deal with. Real down to earth type of setup compared to some of the fakeness you get from the bigger premium branded dealers who are more concerned about meeting brand standards than actually customer service. It was their Mazda showroom that was selling the 530d. Obviously Mazda sales are not huge so they are importing some premium cars from the UK, they have a G30 530d, a 430d and a 640d they brought in. Time may tell how they deal with warranty stuff and obviously isn't the same as the BMW AUC warranty but the buying experience so far has been excellent and I would have no problem recommending them.

It doesn't actually even though it has the chrome door handles. My old 520d had it and found it very handy but given the security vulnerabilities with the system it's probably not a bad thing.

On the plus side, I now have split folding rear seats. :)

Chrome handles are standard from 525d and up. I think you also get the more advanced climate control on anything above the 520d as standard.

    Bazz,
Was there any jump in your car insurance premium moving from 2.0d to 3.0d?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,596 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Yes, €160 for the remaining 6 months. I paid €700 on the 520d last year so I'm expecting around the €950 mark at renewal time. A 430d would have been about €100 less to insure.

You having second thoughts on the 520d?

Very surprised at this bazz. I was 5 months into my insurance on the 525d when i changed over to 535d for remaining 7 months. No increase at all. Doesn't bode well for renewal time in June:(

Unfortunately for us, having a Limerick address and associated unwarranted stereotypes doesn't bode well for insurance renewals as far as I can see.

Having driven the X6 with the 30d engine I must say it is a fantastic powerplant. Out of interest what kind of MPG are ye seeing. The one on our fleet struggles to get above the mid 20s even 6 months after being run in.

    They're both 3 litres though aren't they?
When I was changing e39 a few years ago I enquired about a few different e60 models, 520d, 523i, 530i, 530d and 535d for insurance. The 523i had no change from my e39 525i as they were both 2.5 engines, the 530i/530d/535d all increased insurance by a small bit but the exact same as each other and the 520d brought it down as a 2.0 engine. So looks like the insurance company solely looked at engine size and not bhp figures for me anyway. Surprised me at the time and had me seriously looking at 535d for a while!

In the end I got a great condition 523i with a super spec and fantastic interior for such a cheap price I had to go for it over the premium the diesel cars were asking.

Walin's old 525d would have been 2.0d twin turbo. They dropped the de-tuned 3.0d from the 525d in favour of the 2.0d twin turbo back in circa 2011.

Regarding insurance - my insurance has steadily being increasing every year despite me getting older and maintaining a NCB and clean license. Some insurance companies would not give me online quotes on the 530d so even my options at renewal time will be a bit more limited. The joys of it.

No. The 525d has the same 2 litre engine as 520d but twin turbo. 525d before 2011 had the 3 litre alright.

    Edit: As bazz said!

Is that city driving? Did 75 miles today round trip from Dublin to Glendalough and trip computer showed 40mpg. City driving it will drop to mid 20's. Not suitable at all for diesel engines.

So is the newer 525d a 4 cylinder 2.0d also? Have to say that's news to me but I do believe you.
