So the big question is Carsfan did ya buy anything!!!!?? :)

I’m afraid I succumbed in the end, but not for what I thought I would and very boring compared to yere exotic metal.

I had actually priced my 330e in 3 garages. One Dublin and three country dealers. Worst offer from Dublin guy who mentioned my country reg as pricing it down further. I thought then there wasn’t much point going to any more Dublin dealers. I think the country guys are hungrier for business anyway.
I actually always got a D reg in cars before but on the 330e was forced to register the car to my home address as apparently it had to be the same address as where I had applied for the grants from. The final offers from the other dealers were all within 500 euro of each other at the end.
At the end of the day I had to focus more on the cost to change and not get hung up on how much my car had dropped however painful it is. When they all were giving in and around the same I had to face reality of that what it’s worth.

The garage I'm buying the 530d from is using my name and their garage address to stick a D reg on it. They do it all the time. I'll then change the address once it's on the system. Personally I don't care about the reg but a D reg is probably more universally accepted country wide when selling a car which will have a fairly limited market.

Also congrats on your new purchase, what did you buy in the end? G30? I never got to Colm Quinn in the end but how did you find them to deal with?

    Yeah, fraid so.
Have been suffering back and hip issues so I have been looking for 5 series with comfort package as has fully electric seats with lumbar support and ideally had thought would push the boat out for a 530d if it blew me away on the road.
Colm Quinn have big selection so I drove 530d, 520d se and 520d x drive.
The 530 just didn’t impress me enough over the 520 to go the extra for it. The car enthusiast in me wanted it but the extra initial outlay and running costs as well as the fact I have enough penalty points stopped me in the end. The engine sounds nicer and is undoubtedly much quicker than 520 but cruising they are the same as there is so much sound proofing in the 5 it is incredibly refined.
I have a soft spot for touring models and spotted their demo. 171D Fully loaded m sport plus with all the option packs ticked and more with 2500 miles only.
Got it for what a bit more than basic 181 520d se saloon probably would have cost on the road.

Congratulations, the 520d is still a very good car especially in G30 form. There is a still huge gulf in prices between a 530d and 520d in the G30 and it will take a good few years before that gulf shrinks. The Touring is a beauty and the lines imo are better proportioned than the saloon. What colour did you get?

Sounds a fine bus.....I hope the seats etc do the job.....happy motoring.

Interior I'm sure is miles ahead of what you had. The G30 is fab inside.

Nice motor carsfan. That's the Mediterranean blue one right? He has another 520d 171 estate 10k more expensive with more miles. Must be very high specced to be that more expensive with more miles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,815 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Yes. It’s the Mediterranean blue one I’ve gone with. Some of their prices are a bit all over the place as they had it up for sale on the forecourt for 59995 and I pointed out it was cheaper on the internet.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the other one just hasn’t been repriced as the blue one has all the packs on it.
Found them a good outfit to deal with as long as you know your stuff yourself.

Very nice, I’ve the same car but in Sophisto Grey, gave her a great cleaning today and she is looking like brand new again. Very happy with her so far.

    Enjoy

I doubt that from the man with the 6 series!
I’m pleased to have made the decision though I am surprised with myself for not going for the 3.0 engine. It was an extra 8/10k for that which is a fair bit but doable.
I just didn’t feel the love.
The guys in Colm Quinn reckon the three litre will lose more money over a period too so will be closer in price to the two litre in a few years.

Well wear carsfan! Love the new 5 series.

520d deffo a safer bet for residuals compared to a bigger engine one.

The 6 is lovely but it’s nice having something very fresh too. I’d say I’ll be in a G30 by the start of 2019 if I don’t do anything with the GC that I’ve been told about. 7 year old 6 series will be a good time to move it on before I’ll have to take something starting with a 1 for it.

    Cheers Joe,
You bought from them too I think if I remember correctly. They are better to deal with than a lot of dealers I have visited.

I did indeed, from their Galway showroom, although the car was shipped down to me from the place in Athlone. Yeah I found them very sound to deal with. No bull really, fella I dealt with was very straight. Did you find though that the salesman kept having to run figures by Colm himself? Everything seemed to require the nod from the overlord himself!

I was into them again a few weeks ago for a minor warranty recall job and again I found them good - courteous and professional.

Yes. Agree Joe found them straight but like all of these negotiations it is buyer beware. We finished 7k away in my favor from where proceedings began. God love you if you didn’t have knowledge and took the first offers.
I had sales guy and sales manager in the room with me but on two occasions the sales manager had to defer to Colm himself. I guess he ultimately pays the bills so makes the final decisions. They were keen to get a deal over the line while I was there. Being close to the end of the month may have helped too.

    Excellent, fair play to ya.

If ye finished €7k from their opening offer how far away was your first offer?
(genuine question - trying to improve my negotiation skills. What age was the trade in? )

Did you stretch the negotiations over a few days?

@carsfan2 - did you end up with much equity in the 330e?

I heard at my dealers last week that when the new X5 is released later this year that the 25d engine is being discontinued. I was surprised at this as I thought they were a good seller. There's a lot of them in my area.

In typical Ireland. Small engine, woefully underpowered, 2WD drive and a spec level that only Stevie Wonder could like. Most that were sold came in SE spec with 18" wheels, chrome trim and the likes.

Exact same scenario for me when I bought the 535d back in November. Sales manager kept popping out to run things by Colm and he came in himself for a quick chat but not about negotiations.

First port of call was sales guy who runs things by sales manager who in turn runs it by Mr. Quinn himself! Never came across that before in a dealership but shows he likes to keep his finger on the pulse.

Would go back to them again, none of that smarmy behaviour you can get from some dealerships, just straight talk.

I can see you never to buy a car from Al Hayes in Portumna

I am no great negotiator. I just know a bit about the cars and their values. I may stretch the truth in what the offers from competitors are but find just being good natured and friendly while not letting yourself get bamboozled works. Also always remember you are more important to them than they are to you so you can always just say no thanks and goodbye.
Negotiations were all over in three quarters of an hour.

3k negative bazz. This was as good as I could get.
PCP was not good. If sterling had not lost so much value in the last year I think there would have been some or would have broke even.
Obviously the value of the car stays the same irrespective of how you pay for it so if had bought for cash would have lost the same value. Just have to pay it and move on.

I’m familiar with Hayes. While he and Quinn share a few old school ideas, I think that’s where the comparison ends. I personally wouldn’t buy a newspaper off Al Hayes.

Have to agree with lack of bull**** but like any dealer you need to have your homework done to not get taken advantage of.
