    Grand Slam stars Iain Henderson and Jacob Stockdale will return to provincial action this Saturday after being named in the Ulster team to play Cardiff Blues (BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park, 3.15pm, Sky Sports Arena).

    Stockdale, who was today (Friday) named as Six Nations Player of the Championship, having scored seven tries in five outings, will start on the left wing, with Henderson selected in the back row.

    There are four other new faces in the starting team from the last match versus Scarlets a month ago, with Rob Herring, Clive Ross, Craig Gilroy and Charles Piutau also included.

    Herring will start at hooker in place of John Andrew, while props Andrew Warwick and Wiehahn Herbst will continue on either side of the front row.

    The second row pairing of Kieran Treadwell and Alan O'Connor is unchanged, with the latter set to lead the side for a fourth consecutive match.

    Henderson and Ross will be joined in the back row by number 8 Nick Timoney.

    The half-back partnership of John Cooney and Johnny McPhillips remains in situ, as does the midfield combination of Stuart McCloskey and Luke Marshall.

    Gilroy, Stockdale and Piutau will make up a potent back three.

    Matthew Dalton, who has featured prominently for Ireland U20s in recent weeks, is named on the bench alongside fellow forwards John Andrew, Callum Black, Ross Kane and Matthew Rea.

    Dave Shanahan, Peter Nelson and Louis Ludik provide backline options.

    Ulster Rugby team to play Cardiff Blues, Saturday 24th March at BT Cardiff Arms Park, kick-off 3.15pm (live on Sky Sports Arena):

    (15-9): C Piutau; C Gilroy, L Marshall, S McCloskey, J Stockdale; J McPhillips, J Cooney;

    (1-8): A Warwick, R Herring, W Herbst, A O'Connor (Captain), K Treadwell, I Henderson, C Ross, N Timoney;

    Replacements (16-23): J Andrew, C Black, R Kane, M Dalton, M Rea, D Shanahan, P Nelson, L Ludik.

    It's a sign of how screwed Ulster are that they're starting Henderson and Stockdale in this match. I'm sure they needed IRFU approval for this. Interesting that AOC keeps the captaincy with Henderson back.

    Lose this and they're gone from the Champions Cup race, I reckon.

    Don't forget Ulster won't be playing next week so Stockdale and Henderson wont be playing anymore than the rest of the Ireland players.

    Is it not the European knockouts next week?

    Although in hindsight we may be playing a re-arranged match against Glasgow. Not sure.

    Ah You, Deysel, Van Da Merve all injured?
    Not holding hope for O'Hagan seeing a senior game this year.
    On another note? has the Ulster Rugby website senior team page been updated? and few academy players showing as seniors now, have a few peeps been handed senior contracts?

    No way Buer. It's a sign that we respect the Pro 14 so much that we can drop in Hendo and Stockdale to give the real rugby fans a chance to see a couple of Grand Slam winners live in the flesh. If anything we should get 7 extra bonus points for doing this (one in honour of each one of Stockdale's 6N tries).

    And we thought things couldn't get any worse in Ulster.

    Well that’s it then, it’s dead, pack it all up and send the good bits to Connacht

    Not the only one. I'm sure the son-in-law has many abilities...just not as a coach.

    Edinburgh just been gifted a win by Connacht

    I'd say that's us done. What a disaster.

    Unfortunately the delay in dealing with the mediocrity we've seen the past few years is going to cost us dearly. Massive amounts of pressure on Bryn Cunningham and the IRFU to get the next appointment correct.

    Ulster need to run the table bar an Edinburgh collapse.

    So if Ulster finish 4th they play 4th place team in other conference for a European cup spot? That may be Connacht given Cheetahs are ineligible. Where would game be played?

    Whoever has more points plays at home.

    So likely Ulster at home as things stand....

    Although Ospreys may fancy their chances of moving ahead of Connacht...

    A year in the challenge cup might be the boot in the hole they need.
    Cunningham seems to be a great man for talking but results talk and bullshìt walks.

    I'd given up on a top 3 finish a while back so I'm not particularly disapointed. Embarrassed as much as anything. Put it this way I'd say Benetton have far more chance of catching us than we have of catching Edinburgh.

    Anyway let's just use the rest of the season to give McPhillips minutes. Get Dalton a bit more experience as well and I'd like to see McBurney get a chance But that doesn't seem to be happening.

    The frustrating thing is if you look at us from 11-15 we are as good as anyone in the Pro 14, if ever there was evidence that forwards win matches and backs decide by how much, Ulster is it!
