Eric Ebron could be great if we succeeded in giving him the minitron treatment I think. Minitron kept dropping the ball early in his career but they fixed him, Ebron has been dropping rhe ball for years, very frustrating player. He is still very young though so could be a great one if you can sort out the drops.
The talent is there, but the drops are a concern. Still, must admit I'd take the chance on him, we need the TE help.

We'll get him a pair of those magic red gloves and hopefully that does the trick. :)

Ebron is such a frustrating TE with his drops. Such a talented guy though. If anything he is a solid blocker and another big redzone target.

I see we signed Matt Tobin OT dont know a lot about him doesn't look like he has much game experience though.

Looks like Slater could be on his way out. Time to get paid. He will be missed

Source: Patriots free agent Matthew Slater, a seven-time Pro Bowl special teamer, is in Pittsburgh visiting the Steelers today. Intrigue amongst top AFC teams.

Bolden and Ebner re-signed which keeps them around for our ST unit. Bademosi gone who proved he was solid as a ST and Slater could be gone also. Can't say I seen that one coming but Im guessing he wants to get paid before he retires.

Hope he gets a great deal. Nice guy and top ST player.
But glad we aren't the one paying him. I know he does an excellent job, but I'd rather that money went into protecting Brady or better pass rush. I just think the number of plays he makes in a season, can be done by a player in one game sometimes. Now, I know that's harsh and a bit of a hyperbole, but hope you know what I mean.

That probably more than the rest of us :)
I see PFF has him graded as poor, and he's started 1 game in the last 2 seasons.

    Trading for Cordarrelle Patterson apparently.

Not really sure what to make of that!

Id say we will be re negotiating his contract that is for sure but if we dont its a 3.25m hit on our cap. He does give us a solid returner something we have lacked for a while. Not a bad WR if we can get the best out of him.

Apparently he plays gunner as well, which could mean Slater is definitely gone.

    Seems like it alright.

    Not a bad trade either.

Terms: The #Patriots traded for WR Cordarrelle Patterson, while swapping a 5th round pick for a #Raiders 6th round pick.

Ironic that Vikings traded with us to draft Patterson. We picked up a certain Jamie Collins after

And whats funny about it Patterson said he felt Snubbed by Bill for trading out and not picking him :pac:

Gotta say I'm actually very hopeful that these trades could work out really well. Patterson never lived up to his billing to this point but we might make something more out of him than has been done to this point.

Clayborn hasn't been fantastic but has been a solid player and it reminds me of the Ayers/Branch/Long pickups. All of these were just doing a solid job with their previous teams but they all looked great when they came to New England.

Ebron would be similar in that he seems to have been held to the standard expected of his draft position and he never reached that level but he has always looked talented. If he comes here and we sort out the drops then we will suddenly have a ridiculous amount of weapons for Brady.

We'll have weapons, but we still need some blindside protection and some more linebacker help...

Agreed. Patterson is a good addition with lots of upside at low cost.

But without a replacement LT, perhaps another lineman, and some defensive line and LB additions (pass rusher especially), NE will struggle to get back to the SB next year let alone win it

Defensively we still need to strengthen that Front 7 and as ELM said we 100% need a Left Tackle. I have a felling Bill believes one of the guys we have on the roster can fill that spot but given the lack of experience moving Canon into LT and one of the others in at RT is the only way I can see it working

I shudder at the thoughts of Cannon at LT. Brady won't survive the season.
Outside of QB I haven't been following the draft prospects. Is it likely NE can pick up a starting LT in the draft?

2 maybe 3 in there Pro ready. 2 of them may not drop as far as the Pats.

    Bradley Chubb and Bill.

Bill says this to Chubb after Chubb says nice to meet you etc etc

    "We're picking 31st, no chance." :D

Slater coming back on 2 year deal, per Mike Reiss.

Nice, can't underestimate having a strong leader like Slater in the locker room and hopefully his injury ridden year was a once off.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭TOss Sweep

Fantastic to see him sign. The Patterson move is a nice one now also two solid gunners on ST and a good return man in him also. Be nice to see him work out as a WR also when needed.

didnt comment on it yesterday when rumours of his departure were in flow, but it would have annoyed me if he did leave. and as you say, it was because of his leadership. yes, he is very good on special teams and a very intelligent player in how he goes about things, but his charisma and leadership qualities IMO are far more important. In all those after game videos you see, it is nearly always Slater who is leading the players, the one doing the talking. Even when injured on the sidelines, he was the one going around talking to players and being vocal.

With the experience we have already lost this off season, losing Slater would have been a huge blow IMO. It may sound outrageous to think so, but if he was gone, what leaders other than Brady and a perennially injured Hightower would we have left? McCourty would be one, but he has been playing crap so it negates that slightly. Realistically, the window of dominance is starting to close, there is not much time left to win a superbowl before the natural equilibrium of the NFL pushes the Patriots back to obscurity in the middle of the pack again (ie Brady and Belichick leave) so the more experienced and quality players we keep/get the better, even if they are short deals.

Marquise Flowers and LaAdrian Waddle re-signed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,012 ✭✭✭BizzyC

    Flowers re-signing is good.
Not sold on Waddle, based on his play he's far from a replacement for Solder.

He was solid at RT toward the end of the season. I think he has potential but he seems to over think his play at times and gets beat
