Just back from the football. Once again we got a red card. Ciaran Russell the guilty party this time although I did not see the incident. The lack of workrate by us and our soft touch defense was so disappointing. Added to our non-existent kick-out strategy where we were put under unreal pressure by Roscommon and our inability to read their kicking game and their good off the shoulder running made it an impossible job for us. It just shows that we are not a Division 1 team (with some people talking up that prospect within the Clare camp after beating a poor Down team) and will never be sadly. Staying put in Division 2 is a must though.

As for the hurlers once again according to the Clare FM commentary team, we were beaten up in relation to the physical stakes (yet again), this time against the Deise men. I can tell you now if it is Limerick next Sunday, then we will not win on the basis of the Shannonsiders magnificant win v Galway where they played with great hunger and intelligence and that bit of Limerick passion and pride is well and truly back again. They seem to be flying and their workrate was immense. Fair play to them.

roscommon were excellent up front , donie smith kicked 9 points 7 from play
but we were never out of the game until the sending off which changed the course of the game completely

like the down game we were a goal up inside 30 seconds , this time david tubridy with the goal , but the rossies chiped away back into the game , like the cavan game though killian roachs kick outs came under question once again over the course of the game he gifted the visitors 1-2 with shocking kickouts espically going short ,

we have one of the best midfield partnerships in the country its unforgivable for a goalkeeper to keep making the same mistakes

the first roscommon goal was gifted to dirmuid murtagh with ths scores 1-2 to 6 points , roche went short again this time putting ciaran russel under pressure before donie smith intercepted and made it 1-7 to 1-2 in the space of a couple of plays

the task was made virtually impossible when russell was sent off 8 minutes into the second half , a well worked cathal cregg goal had the rossies out of sight with 9 minutes remaining , gary brennan got one back for us late on but it was game over at that stage

we worked hard today but made far too many mistakes to give ourselves a chance , the roscommon forwards were excellent and kicked only a handful of wides , tough game against cork next week , 6 points is the magic number this year to avoid the drop , i imagine on todays showing we will have to wait until two weeks time to notch up our next win against struggling louth to maintain division 2 status for next year

    clare scorers
    David Tubridy 1-3,(0-3f),
    Eoin Cleary 0-5 (-2f),
    Gary Brennan 1-0,
    Keelan Sexton 0-2,
    Pearse Lillis 0-1,
    Seán O’Donoghue 0-1.

a coin toss will decide the venue for clare and limerick in next weeks 1/4 final , limerick hurling is flying at the moment , so this is going to be a serious challenge , we could do with one or two more games to sharpen things up before the break but this is going to be tough ,especially if it is on in limerick

but yeah limerick without the na piarsaigh players will still be a challenge , but fair play to them for pulling of the promotion it has haunted them for years ,

Was at the football today, f**king hell that was annoying, we have a great team but WTF do we get involved in sh1t, Russell being sent off was the end of the contest, Roscommon were able to exploit the extra man and just carry the ball which was their second goal.

1 thing that stood out to me though was following the GaaClare twitter, there was an update for every score in the hurling but very rarely in the football.

Beaten by the better team today, their forwards were excellent. Hope Keelan Sexton isn't badly injured.

I think if Tipp beat Down next Sunday and we beat Louth in the last round we are safe. Meath are playing Down in the last game so only one of them could finish above us if we get 6 points

yeah better team won no doubt , but we contributed to that with several mistakes of our own , the kick outs that led to 1-1 in quick succession and the sending off were killers as we were holding our own on both turning points

we are much better then what we showed today , its only our second defeat of the league , if we improve for next week we should be putting it up to cork, but yeah the probable outcome would be to beat louth in the last game and the loser of down and meath will get relegated

I'd say that's close enough to our championship 15. I've heard that the team and management have had "Crisis Meetings" because of how the last 2 games went, I'd expect Clare to win handy tomorrow as Limerick will be missing the na Piarsaigh lads

Personally I still think that our workrate is well short of what is required if we are to contend for All-Ireland glory come August. Maybe this "crisis meeting" was about that. I think being physically bullied is our big concern as we enter the concluding stages of the league and how we cannot cope with a "crowded middle third" that both DF and Derek McGrath implemented to suffocate our running game.

This match is going to be much closer then many believe. Limerick brought ferocious workrate against Galway last Sunday and they look much fitter to my eyes. John Kiely is getting the best out of Limerick and I think they justify the favorites tag tomorrow despite the loss of the Na Piarsaigh players.

From our point of view the performance is more important and a 70 minute display is so vital and if that happens we should win (big if though). But on the basis of Clare's tendency to fall asleep at times added to a new hunger that Limerick have brought under Kiely, Kinnerk and co. then I think the Shannonsiders may well come out on top in a very tight contest.

We aren't physically strong enough, we've no plan B for puck outs and we are terrible at shooting from distance, I fear we aren't going anywhere but I hope I'm wrong

I dont know , I think we have improved drastically in the phsycal stakes , I just think some players are not pulling there weight at the moment, Jamie shannahan and cathal mc will add to the panel and might just wake up a few sleeping giants on the side . Would be far happier to see Duggan and conlon swap positions , Duggan has tendencies to catch the ball with the wrong hand or take his eye off the ball when double marked , he opperates better out the field when it comes to fielding

Conlon inside would take so much pressure off McGrath and o Donnell ,

But every team has massive problems to fix, limerick themselves are every bit as wastfull as ourselves ,last week again nearly 20 wides registered ,

Tipp have yet to rectify there full back line frailties. Galway are miles behind everyone at the moment cork have little options on the bench if they pick up one or two injuries , Kilkenny are very much in transition , wexford are bound to run out of steem while Waterford dont seem to have a plan B if plan A fails

I wouldn't panic just yet ,everyone else is experiencing some sort of problems at the moment , I think we are going in the right direction but at a slower pace then I would like

I have emotion running over me after Clare's extraordinary win over Cork in the National Football League Division 2 clash in Pairc Ui Rinn tonight. What emotive stuff. A great day for Colm Collins, his management team and the players. Jamie Malone, Gary Brennan immense along with Cathal O'Connor and cool man David Tubridy. Never in my life would we go down to Cork and be competitive, let alone win. Well done lads. You have done the county and the clubs and families where you have come from so proud!!!!!!!

Great win. We had 2 missed goal chances at the start of the match that I was afraid we would regret. Great comeback in the second half after being 2 points down at half time. Brennan scored two fantastic points and eoin cleary has become an absolutely brilliant forward. Jamie Malone made a huge difference from the Roscommon game. We should be safe from relegation now. Tiny crowd there but it was absolutely freezing!

was there myself just back great win would have been a lot more straight forward had we found the net with them two goal chances ,

eamon tubridy from doonbeg made his debut tonight and did well with both long and short kickouts , jamie malone was a huge loss last week against Roscommon bar his brain fart of a free in the first half which led to a cork point he done excellent , his best game of the year so far , there midfield was poor , brennan and o'connor were excellent ,

but the defensive structure brought in this year by coach alan flynn was by far the stand out point , ever since the collapse in navan he as set up the team with a counterattacking system that has us now catching teams on the break rather then them catching us on the run , its very similar to the style of play used by the corofin mans club in galway

high points aside , we kicked a number of harmless wides tonight , something we have not done in recent weeks while i lost count of the amount of times we dropped the ball short

there was a small crowed tonight ,maybe because of the day that's in it more likely though a symbol of where exactly cork football is at the moment ,
clare football is flying though , it would be nice if some of the people that consider themselves football people get off there behinds and support the team a bit more however , we have a good young team at the moment that deserve support lets hope we see an improvement on attendances especially at home next week against louth

    clare scorers :

    David Tubridy 0-4 3f,
    Eoin Cleary 0-3 1f,
    Jamie Malone, 0-3
    Gary Brennan 0-3
    Keelan Sexton 0-1.

Great win for the footballers today, by my reckoning they'll still need another point to be safe but it would take a lot of bad luck for them to go down. With the bottom 4 all playing each other over the next couple of rounds (Meath are playing Louth & Down, Clare are playing Louth) and with Down playing Tipp as well all the teams will be taking points off each other, if Meath get 4 points then Clare are still above Louth and Down would need to get a win against Tipp to trouble us, if Down get 4 points then Clare are safe, if Louth get 4 points Clare would need Down to get a win against Tipp to relegate us. So by my reckoning for us to stay up we should be hoping for a Tipp win

Looking at the other end of the spectrum, I don't think it would be possible for the footballers to go up as we'd need Tipp, Roscommon and Cork all to lose their last matches and Roscommon are playing Cork, we'd need to Cork to beat Roscommon and Clare to beat Louth by at least 24 points. It's an awful pity we couldn't have converted 1 of those draws (especially the Cavan game) into a win, the trimming we got against Meath isn't helping us either.

    Promotion not possible after Roscommon beat cavan today. The following set of results would send us down on scoring difference by my reckoning;
    Meath to beat Louth
    Down to beat Tipp
    Roscommon to beat Cork
    Meath to beat Down
    Louth to beat us
That would leave us, Down and Cork all on 6 points with Meath on 7 points. The first 4 results could easily happen but we really should be beating Louth going by other teams results against them

you would get a nice price with the bookies for all that them to come in on the one bet , in my opinion we are safe we have had a great league considering how many departed at the start of the year and the fact we had to use so many inexperienced young lads , we were in massive transition and probably still are , we could have a good championship yet by our own standards ,

I can't see Meath winning the 2 games or Down beating Tipp so I'd like to say we're safe, ideally I'd like us to win our last game, to go through a league campaign with only 2 losses would be a great achievement, considering we should have beaten both our drawn games it'd be considered a great campaign.

Jamie Malone looked in good form on the highlights on League Sunday. Always impressed by him whenever I have seen Clare play.

he is good , and while i taught he was our man of the match last night (brennan played well but was surprised he got it ) malone has the uncanny knack of hitting the black spot on the crossbar from 13 yards out , :D

if he could steddy himself in front of goal he could have knocked knocked both mayo and kerry out of last year championships in munster and all ireland , think he missed a sitter against ye in salthill last year too

great player but cork are so light down the middle it was almost easy for him last night

A very good first 10 min. from Clare.

This really does look like division 1 vs 2, some early impressions are that our shooting from distance has improved but our puck outs are poor and does Browne get booked in every match?

What 11 or 12 steps there. Work away sure. Limerick really are a filthy team.

I am fuming with the performance of Galway ref Alan Kelly. Limerick's goal should not have stood for the over use of steps. It is clear that Limerick are tackling too high and yet this ref cannot see it. Limerick are playing an attritional game to bully Clare. Hope Clare stand up to this but with only a 3 point lead at h-t and the Shannonsiders with the wind to come, I fear the worst.

This is typical limerick though. If they put as much effort into hurling as the hard man **** they might a few all Ireland's.

10 and touched the ball on the ground. Should have been given a free in though as was being fouled.
