Definitely better than I had imagined but I did "race it". 4.25mins outside PB, but that will come back to me when I get the training back consistently. Thanks D.

Thanks B, I may have been capable of faster end of last year but currently this is where I'm at. Lots of work to do to make big improvements like you have been doing!! Well done again. FT HH suits you:D

    Bohermeen 10k - Sunday 11th March

This was originally supposed to be the Half sandwiched between Donadea 50K and London Marathon. Then it became a target to get to the start& finish line.

Plan was to just get around but when I started off, I was well back and I just decided to go with feel but to not just jog it. I settled into a nice pace and forgot about the pace after than. I even had a buff covering my watch so I wouldn't be tempted to look as it was all about running on effort.

First and second miles felt good and they came in at 8.18 and 8.02, Mile 3 and it got a little tougher so when I got to the water station I took a bottle of water and walked through it. Mile 3 cam in a 8.25

Mile 4 was more settled and I found my groove again. This came in at 8.20 and although I wasn’t flying I was passing people the whole time. Mile 5 and I got a pain in the left hip (usually the right is the problem) and I could feel a limp as I ran. At this stage the voice in my head was telling me to walk as it was too much effort to run, but I just slowed the pace a bit and decided to keep with the run by feel and reminded myself that I hadn’t done any significant runs in 8 weeks!! I slowed a bit in this mile, about 10 people passed me here mile 5 8.29.

The limp eased as I picked up the pace a bit for the final mile but was trying to stay controlled. I was now passing people again and mile 6 came in at 8.08.

The final bit and breathing was now a bit erratic but I wouldn’t ease up and the last .2 came in at 7.19 and I passed 4 people on the track run in to the clock. I was fairly spent by the end.

The race went way better than I thought it would and I was delighted with myself.

Great to catch up with Coach and many others from the running community. I was heading for the car after my race but ended up staying till the 2 hr pacers went to the finish. With all the cheerleading I forgot to do a cool down run. I was going to do one when I got home but sat down and put the feet up instead and got wrapped in “Mothers day” love instead.:D Really enjoyed the day.

Afterwards – body not too bad but hips niggly. Monday morning, I was fine but my Monday evening hips sore again and quads slightly tight. Solid 8 hrs sleep last night and Today all is good again and I will get a short easy run in later.

    Total 6.22 in 51.17 @ 8.15(Garmin) Official Gun time 51.23

And so I finally got an answer to my woes, the MRI and xrays have come back and although the xrays show degeneration in both hips, it’s what the GP says they would expect from a runner.

The MRI shows quite a bit of degeneration in my L5S1 disc which is pinching on a nerve and causing the leg pain!!! So official diagnosis is L5-S1 disc herniation.

So between the Sports Therapist, osteopath, GP and physo its been the Piriformis, glutes, psosas, adductor, sciatica and hips and I suppose they were all correct as they have all been impacted by the back, hip & leg pain.

One thing they all agree and Coach had me started last year was that I need to strengthen the back & core and toughen everything up. I’m a bit soft and I also(my own diagnosis) need to lost 10 – 14 lbs

The GP has told me that weight bearing exercise is recommended and has to continue so to keep running but reduce mileage if there is any pain. It will be interesting to see if Physio agrees.

    Let the Rehab begin!!

    That's what I have YA.

You need to be very careful to ensure it doesn't get worse.

Not so sure I'd run on it at all if it's herniated.

    I found Pilates fantastic.

Make sure your hip flexors and glutes aren't tight as they can exacerbate the back tightness

Pm me if you have any questions.

    TbL

At least you finally have a diagnosis Anne and hopefully that'll be the start of the recovery now. It will be interesting to see if the physio agrees with the GP on the running!!

Is there a 'cure' for that (ie an operation or anything?) or is that what the S&C is for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,301 ✭✭✭ariana`

Sorry to hear this A but hopefully between the various professionals you can come up with a good treatment plan to get you back on your feet.

Good luck with the rehab Anne. Fingers crossed you get sorted.

Thanks C, will be in touch when i get to digest the info and read the report in full. Spot on the physio said no running until she has the report as she would not recommend it.

There is surgery but Doc thinks its not at that stage yet!! I was correct Physio said no running after i inquired as I knew ThebitterLemon wasn't allowed to run so GP saying yes had me a tad confused!!!

I know that crossed my mind too but listen to your gut, mother's intuition and all that! The GP definitely seems to be one to take with a pinch of salt  I think you will find a way back from this, it's too important to you.

Ah, sorry to hear that. I did wonder when you were writing about it earlier...

That's exactly (L5/S1) where I have the troublesome disc. If it's really aggravating I'd be careful about running on it just in case it makes it worse. Or keep it very gentle. Best of luck with the strengthening.

Good luck with rehab Ann I am glad you know what it is now and I hope you are back running as soon as you are able

Finally you’ve gotten to the root cause, that’s a good thing for sure. Best wishes for the rehab work A, it will likely take some patience but if you treat this as diligently as you’ve taken your training you’ll get it sorted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,355 ✭✭✭Bungy Girl

L5/S1 was where I had my disc-related issues too :( PM me if you want any info on what worked for me in terms of rehab. TbL talking a fair bit of sense there too :pac::pac:.

Best of luck with the rehab A, take your time and recover well.

Good news in that they seem to have discovered the root cause. Take your time and recover well.

I'm another one in the L5-S1 club! There is a way back ( if you'll excuse the pun) so best of luck with the recovery A.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,338 ✭✭✭eyrie

Oh that's really tough, I'm sorry. But as others have said at least now you know, and more importantly you know what can be done about it. Plus there seems to be plenty of other people here who've had the same issue and are back running. Fingers crossed for you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭Younganne

Thanks all.....wow didn't realise there were so many in the L5/S1 club!!! and as eyrie pointed out back running(most of you)

Anyway I'm a bit confused as the GP said herniated but the physio and the report say that its a bulging disc ie disc protrusion with impingement on the Si root but no root damage. So that's excellent news.

The physio says no running as we need to avoid it becoming worse and when the s&c training starts that I can "Earn the right to run":eek: No messing with her!!!

Anyway I walked 3 days in a row and have very bad leg pain that's interrupting my day and my nights sleep, so going to take the bike of the trainer and head out for a spin...just need to build up the courage first!!!

want to say thank you for the messages and the PM from people telling their story Great to see there is a road to recovery available.

The fact that I sit in the car for my commute of 60 - 90 minutes in the morning and then sit for 8 hours at a desk and then commute home again isn't helping so I definitely need to change up a few things and get better habits going and I need to build in some movement breaks. Some days I'm so engrossed that it could be 3 hours before I leave my desk!!!

Thankfully the healthy eating has kicked in and allowing a little leeway over the weekend I still hope to lose 2 lbs this week and then kick on again next week!!!

Keep the faith, Anne. Your path to recovery seems clearer now. Good luck with it and hope to see you back soon.

Just catching up on boards A and read your initial diagnosis followed by your March 28th report. The similarities with so many other contributors is striking and it is good to see that there are very positive outcomes. I think that your own observation on modern "sedentary" lifestyles, my own included, is telling. I have no doubt about your dedication to S&C and subsequent recovery.
