be3. Lower case b. Get it right.

Does it matter so much that you have to be so rude about it?

"BBC1" and "BBC One" are used interchangeably. "Channel 5" and "Five" were used interchangeably at one stage, too.

And with the very greatest of respect, Mikey... I see no real need to post so frequently on TV3-related threads.

    :o:o:o;)

Another thing about this rebrand is that 3News and 3Player will be rebranded too.

And "Virgin News" and "Virgin Player" just don't have the same ring, do they?

This really does reek of vanity on the part of VMI more than anything else. Even more so, dare I say, than when Carlton changed the names of Central and Westcountry to its own name in 1999...

Because all Carlton did here was change the names of the stations - the respective local news programmes, Central News and Westcountry Live, retained their names well into the 2000s. And in the case of Central, the name change didn't exactly come out of the blue - Carlton took that station over as early as 1994, credited its programmes (including Family Fortunes and Supermarket Sweep) to "Carlton UK Productions" in 1995, then introduced Carlton-style idents in 1998.

    2hq83l1.jpg

What's more, when Carlton took over HTV in 2000, they didn't change *that* station's name:

And the idents that accompanied this rebranding exercise were brilliant. If the same happens with TV3's rebrand, I'll eat another pair of socks...

David Cameron used to work for Carlton y'know.

I completely agree. Feels like a complete waste of money

Just bring back the Virgin Megastore it would cost less and lose less money than these channels.

If they're renaming 3player to Virgin Player, 3News to Virgin News, then will 3Kids follow the same... :pac:

David Cameron used to work for Carlton y'know.

Indeed he did - as its director of corporate affairs.

Its chairman, Michael Green, was also a staunch Conservative and a friend of Margaret Thatcher - which may or may not have been a factor in the company taking the ITV London weekday franchise from Thames...

If it fails spectacularly, I wonder what will happen to VMI...?

Lest we forget, such was the failure of UTV Ireland that it cost UTV Media everything. Rupert Murdoch now owns their radio stations, while UTV NI has the exact same look as ITV in England and Wales...

The rebrand is off. For now, anyway.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/media-and-marketing/tv3-halts-move-to-rebrand-channels-1.3420305?mode=amp

So VM1, VM2 and VM3 were the proposed new names for the channels. Isn't the VM1 name a bit *too* similar to that of VH1...?

I predict Virgin Media will sell them now.

I predict Virgin Media will sell them now.

That would be some about-face...

Over on TV Forum, it has been suggested that Virgin Media could keep the channels' names but change the corporate colour to red and add small versions of their logo to the idents - and that they could also claim that the "TV" in TV3 has always stood for "Television Virgin".

    DE88 is me, yes. :);)

The folks who regularly post on TV Forum know quite a lot about TV - some of them have even worked in the industry. :);)

I think the re-brand will happen, in about September.

Also, I doubt this would happen, but a reboot of Night Shift would be good. Ben Frow just didn't give it a chance when he took over the old Channel 6. I would propose a reduction of the show from two hours as was the case with the original, to one hour for the hypothetical reboot. I thought Love Island would never come back (not that I like it) and look how successful the reboot has been! It's coming back for a fourth series this summer, when the original didn't even get a third.

It's official.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/media-and-marketing/tv3-will-rebrand-to-virgin-and-add-sports-channel-this-autumn-1.3546943

And I wonder why they've chosen to re-brand on a Thursday? Saturday 1st September is surely a more logical date, as is Monday 3rd...

Also of note is the fact that the channel's 20th anniversary on 20 September *will* be celebrated to some extent.

Of course, these celebrations *won't* be as big as the ones for TG4's 20th, two years ago. And as it'll be a mere three weeks after the name change, I wouldn't be surprised if VM treat the occasion as a way of saying a proper goodbye to the TV3 name.

Mind you, I *am* kind of hoping this re-brand fails and the TV3 name comes back in some way... :o:o;)

    New name, same shít tv.

Poor TG4 3rd channel on TV but by the time they were switching from TnaG, the number 3 had been snatched up. And now it's just being dumped ha

Now that it is officially confirmed, Saorview must do a reshuffle of its channel line up and of course a rebrand of TG4 to TG3 HD.
VM tv take the channel 4,5 and 6 slots.

It usually doesn't happen that when a mainstream TV channel changes its name, it makes considerable changes to its programming too. ;)

But it's the manner of *this* particular name change that is so jarring. RTE2 becoming Network 2 in 1988, and then becoming RTE2 again in 2004, those made perfect sense. So did Antenne 2 and FR3 becoming France 2 and France 3 respectively in 1992.

This one doesn't make anywhere near as much sense, though. As I've said before, it has quite a whiff of vanity on VM's part.

I can't see TG4 changing *its* name any time soon. :);)

Can't see it changing its logo, either, which it has been using in one form or another since the re-brand from TnaG in 1999. In contrast, TV3 has changed its logo twice in the last ten years (although both changes came about following the takeover of another channel). ;)

Any chance they'll broadcast in HD on Saorview

Or whats the reason they don't for those up on those things?

It mentioned something on the times about the virgin sport channel only being available to Virgin customers... What are the chances of rugby/six nations & other formerly TV3 sport coverage being denied to non virgin customers? Pay per view by the back door?

Rugby - very unlikely, because people will just watch the Six Nations on BBC and ITV, and because they bought the Heineken Cup package with a stipulation from EPCR that it be shown free to air. For entirely different reasons to do with the nature of that industry, I also expect the horse racing coverage to remain FTA.

I would expect the sports channel to be primarily built on the European football rights they’ve acquired.

I wonder have the bought the rights for the Saturday 3pm PL games off the Premier Sports.

Do you have a source for this or is it your own personal speculation?
