I wonder have the bought the rights for the Saturday 3pm PL games off the Premier Sports.

Maybe - though because of the close working relationship, I would expect eir to get first refusal on those if they are willing to pay the price being asked for.

Not going to happen, there is no chance in hell that TG4 are going to ditch their brand just because VM have changed theres.

If this is any kind of success, VM are going to want to acquire channels in the UK and rebrand them (again). Which would mean they would need to change the Irish channel names again to avoid confusion.

I'll miss the Three, always liked this signoff!

I read theyve to pay a fee to RTE to broadcast on Saorview and to broadcast in HD costs substantially more. Without HD being available for free, it draws customers to either their own subscription service (Virgin Media) or SKY TV, who in turn pay them for their channels as far as I know.

Yup that's it they have to pay a crazy amount of money to be broadcast in HD on Saorview - Source a 2RN engineer I chatted to while touring 2RN.. And why would they bother at this stage

I meant in the reference to the Saorview reorganisation, not TG4 changing their name.

Incredibly that start up/closedown sequence is still in use, or at least was up till recently, and they even bothered to update the logo at the end every time they changed it.

Just my own personal opinion, just like everyone else, we can say what we like but get nowhere, it would be better to keep all the VM channels together. I now accept the fact they will not go HD on Saorview, so roll on RTE3 HD (if they'll ever be one).

Yeah, and supposedly €20 per month for VM Sports if you're not a VM TV subscriber. Best of luck to them with that...

All of the same games will also be on BT Sport, so no need to take VM Sport if you have that already.

TG4 should rebrand to its old name TnaG and take the 3th channel on the EPG on Saorview.

I was wondering would BT not have to block those games from Ireland if VM Sport have the Ireland rights?

It's *not* going to rebrand. Especially if TV3's rebrand fails. Ceart go leor?

No, eir have confirmed (in rather plain terms) that won’t be the case.

The ads popping up now with just over two weeks to go...

I saw quite a few while wandering around the Northside yesterday - on the sides of buses as well as on billboards.

Does anyone else expect to have trouble referring to Ireland AM as a Virgin Media One show and Colette as a Virgin Media News presenter, among other things? :o

Nope, I've spent three years preparing!

    Get outta here...

I'll bet there are some people who, not deliberately, still refer to Coronation Street as a Granada soap - sixteen years after Granada's on-air identity disappeared, twelve since the last episode with "A Granada Production" at the end, and nearly five since the set was moved from the old Granada Studios in Quay Street to the MediaCityUK complex, three miles down the road.

Meanwhile, in the south of England, the ITV regional news programme that the legendary Fred Dinenage has been presenting for donkey's years is currently called ITV News Meridian. I'll bet there are some older people in the area who, not deliberately, still say that he presents Coast to Coast - the name for the programme when TVS held the ITV franchise for this area between 1982 and 1992.

There will be 2 specials related to TV3's 20 years around their anniversary on the 20th September. One from Gogglebox, that will see them watch certain highlights (and lowlights) since 1998.
Then another going through their 20 years in more detail, with interviews from those who were part of the station.

Still strange that they will be celebrating this, yet are getting rid of the name.

I'd expect 3Kids to be dropped. They seemed to lose interest in it with zero no programmes on it, and reshowing 12 programmes on a loop now.
3News to become VM News probably.
Xpose's current slot of 8 will be gone to News At 8, so their position is looking dodgy.

What are VM Sports going to fill in outside of the CL and EL weeks. Their weekends are going to be completely bare. 16 reshowings of Champions League magazine probably. A Sports Tonight return would be nice to see.

Would be nice to see at least some sort of music show on the new channels.
Eoghan McDermott would be a good presenter for it.

They’re rumoured to be doing one. Muireann O’Connell set to host.

Do you not agree though a music programme would be a great idea? Maybe brought in line with Spotify?

In all fairness I think it is a great idea, I used to love shows like CD:UK and Top 30 Hits back in the day.

Can't understand why they haven't gone down a music programme route since around 2003. They had Pop On 3, The Sound Room, Pepsi Chart Show (albeit a an Irish presenter on Channel 5 show), Dynamite TV and Music3 in the first few years. Nothing since. It can't be that expensive to have an hour show over a weekend, with a presenter, small chat and music videos - similar to what Dave Fanning did with 2TV in the 90s.

How does that Stones song go again?

I *will* say that a music programme would be a great idea - and not only on one of the rebranded channels, but on RTE2 too.

As Loughc and iseegirls say, there used to be plenty of 'em. Nowadays, you only really find them on TG4 - and the two biggest ones, Geantraí and Glór Tíre, specialise in traditional and country music respectively.

TG4 used to have Pop 4 - which, incidentally, Eoghan hosted in its later years. For me, though, the show's best period was in the mid-2000s - a period when it had its own website, the pop music scene was still quite good, and the fabulous Róisín Ní Thomáin was the host. :);)

    https://web.archive.org/web/20070406192937/http://www.pop4.ie:80/

Alas, TV stations' attitudes change. And it's the same with sport - RTE2 used to show highlights from the likes of European Tour golf, Samsung Super League show jumping and the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship almost every night; now it only really shows the major sporting events like the All-Ireland Championships and the Champions League (and almost always live).

We can only hope that their attitudes will change again - and that programmes of the likes of Pop 4, Top 30 Hits and Music Cubed will come back into favour. Clamouring for them to change their attitudes, as Mikey seems to be doing, probably won't have the desired effect...

Getting back on topic, Virgin Media have started counting down the days:

(As an aside, interesting that TV3 are showing Gift Wrapped - a little-known and not-very-good summer replacement for The Chase in 2014.)

And here is the promo for (grits teeth) Virgin Media One. Safe to say, "Dreams" is not as appropriate here as it was in Croke Park last Sunday...

They had their Autumn/Winter launch this evening.
I might like to watch the Fiona Sinott program and Gogglebox.

It still seems strange that they've chosen the last Thursday in August for this rebrand, rather than the following Saturday or Monday.

I'm sure they had a reason for choosing this particular day, though.

Unsure about that to but they normally just ended up with a date.
I would have understood the 20th of September because it's there 20th Birthday!
