Biggest gripe I have is trying to find a good day to properly detail a car. The amount of times I have prepared the car for wax only to find out it has started to lash rain.

    Get a garage or gazebo

Anyone try the Sonax range of products ? I have tried the Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer (BSD) and would highly recommend it! Applied over 2 weeks ago and have carried out 3 maintenance washes since and its still holding tough. CLICK HERE FOR IMAGE

Just drove past a second hand car sales place in Galway.
Guy out the front washing a fairly new car with a bucket and a brush. My heart.

I think it's fairly safe to say that 98% of people will buy a car that suits them and won't let how it's washed deter them as they would probably wash it that way themselves. It takes a lot more time (and therefore money) to wash a car properly and since it makes no difference, they just do it the easy way i.e. brush.

I'm happy enough to be part of the 2% :D

Yeah you are totally correct. Talking to a friend the other day who has a car covered in swirl marks.
I was offering to help him tidy it up a bit but he didn't care and said the person he potentially sells it to won't care either.

Curran - any truth to the rumour that you will be offering detailing services????

Yes there is. Just sorting out a few final things; Motor Road Risk Cover, and a few bits of equipment, but essentially taking any interest in Detailing work! Will have a limited input on the actual work side but have a very skilled guy coming on board with 25+ years around body shops, painting, polishing, wet sanding, detailing, etc. We had been chatting about the need for a few more top quality detailers and things fell into place. We have some interesting new offerings; just waiting on the official announcement from the powers that be!

Would a dealer care much about very light scratches from washing? Assuming nothing bad happens to my car in the next 2 and a half years, I'd consider getting a polish if it was worth while.

Noticed a tiny bit of lacquer peel on the left wing on the car. Anything that can be done to prevent it spreading?

Touch up and apply new lacquer.

Just a follow up on the van signage. Tackled it over the weekend, used a medium foam pad and medium polish on the DA and it took care of it very nicely. Started with the medium pad and finishing polish but that was not doing the trick so stepped up to the medium polish.

Then we had to do the whole van. I say we, but my brother did the vast majority of the polishing. First time doing paint correction on something painted white. Was interesting compared to my own black car.

Good to see you got the results you wanted.

Any joy with tar remover? Personally I wouldn't have thought so but interested to see what you thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,393 ✭✭✭✭Vegeta

I had 2 bottles of AG tar remover and we used that on my brothers van, but we knew we were polishing afterwards anyway so I wasn't too concerned if we were a little heavy handed.

My own car is black and has about 2 years of tar on it. I'd rather not polish it afterwards if I can avoid it but there's just so much tar that I think a polish is going to be inevitable. I need to get some tar remover now anyway so I think I'll try the Car Pro Tarx.

What I was asking is if the tar remover had any effect on removing the residue and if the ghosting of the signage was only removed by polishing?

It did have quite a noticeable effect for sure, but polishing was necessary for the reasons you outlined previously. Would I use the tar remover again, yeah if looks like there's still some adhesive or gunk on there.

Does anybody know how hard new Mitsubishi paint is? A friend of mine got a new L200 in black 6 months ago. It's been washed a couple of times since and there are a load of slight swirl marks from poor washing.

I've got the lovely job of helping him sort it. For a quick win, I was thinking AG SRP as that's got fillers to hide the swirls, but it's only temporary. I was thinking of DA but want to check with you lot if there's a "magic cream" that'll work before I crack out the DA and attack it.

Should be on the softer side.

CarPro ClearCut on a finishing pad should give you some really nice results...you'll get decent cut while finishig down really nicely...and on the DA, should be no holograms.

On the flip side, you could do CarPro Essence, in which you will get a ltitle correction, return the gloss with the semi permanent fillers and protection in one.

Hang on til I get a picture of ClearCut in action

Used both Carpro Essence and ClearCut. With the ClearCut, i'd nearly move up to a medium polishing pad with it, as it will remove more defects but ClearCut itself still finishes down very nicely. Hard to tell exactly what the paintwork is like, defect-wise, until you wash and decontaminate it. Could be more than light swirls there. I've used it with micro-fiber and wool and finishes down great even with those.

Essence is such a great product when wanting good results but not having the time or wanting to put the effort in. The fact it leaves a layer of protection to help lock in the fillers is great too.

Another plus with Essence is that once you use it to polish a panel you can apply CQuartz directly on top without having to wash it or use IPA.

Toyota Supra, 25 year old paintwork - 1 pass with CarPro ClearCut on a Rupes White Ultra Fine pad, on a Rupes BigFoot MKII

Its not perfect, but given a fine pad, if that was a medium cut pad, it would correct better, at a little expense of ultimate shine / gloss

Two weeks ago I flew over to the UK to become a Gtechniq Accredited Detailer with D&D, must say, their premises is top notch with an absolutely phenomenal Detailing Bay, anything you could ever want with perfect temperature, humidity and lighting conditions! Fantastic day over there and it was great to get to know the history behind the company and what's in the works over there!
