Do millennials also think people who are obese are 100% safe from criticism, have you ever come across this? In a kind of "people can be/think/identify as whatever the hell they wish"?

Why do people assume everyone born after 1983 are anything like the miniscule minority of complete embarrassments to humanity who actually take offense to a 12 age rated vanilla tv show ?

I read a review of the episode where Chandler finds out that many people assume he is gay. The review site is one I really like but the writer in question seems to be quite sensitive to perceived homophobia. He said that Chandler's aversion to being thought of as gay amounted to "gay panic". To me, I read it that Chandler - as a straight male - was worried that the apparently common assumption he was gay was ruining his chances with women he meets and likes. A totally reasonable stance to me.

He also seemed to think that making Susan a bit of a wagon was casting a gay character as a villain. Whereas I think it was a ballsy move on the part of the show to make her pretty unlikable.

I like when gay people are villains in shows, gives 3 dimensionality to gay characters. That gay people can have any kind of personality, the fact that they're gay is just another aspect to their personality

Can we stop having threads based on the idea that what some anonymous twat with a social media account says is news, ignore them and leave them to their echo chamber. At some point reality is going to crash in all around them.

Wonder when will the BBC be asked to drop repeats of Dads Army on the grounds that the cast is mainly made up of old white men?

Actually the show was pretty progressive. Definitely could have done with more characters of color but it wasn't inherently racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. In fact, Ross's wife was a lesbian; Chandler's dad was a drag queen; Joey and Ross dated women who were smart, powerful, funny, and minorities; Monica and Rachel challenged any stereotypes of women every single time they arose, Phoebe's entire existence was progressive, etc.

I watched Friends when it was first broadcast and I enjoyed it. Then I was slightly older than the cast and I had favourites. I liked Chandler and Joey - wasn't crazy about Ross. I liked Rachel, and Monica and less so Phoebe.

I'm watching it again on Netflix, and enjoying it even more, and thinking now what a dork I must have been back then. They're all very funny and I really enjoy Phoebe and Ross now whereas I didn't before.
I don't get a sense of sexism or racism. I just see a very funny sitcom. It's really not real life, only a comedy. I wouldn't take it to seriously.

This guy is deputy editor of the Irish Examiner, the same paper that employs Louise O Neill. A twat he is but a twat in a position of more influence than he deserves.

“Cave dwellers with a crush”. The lad is the epitome of a man with a guitar thinking everyone fancies him.

I’ve mentioned this on a couple of other threads, this whole millennial/snowflake thing annoys me, I know plenty of lads in their early 20s and they get upset at very little. They are in general maybe a bit more open to different races or gays than older generations but that’s obviously a broad stroke. This is older do gooders being outraged on their behalf

He gets outraged a lot on behalf of woman and black people. There are BLM activists in the states who are less easily offended over perceived racism than this lad.

If only there was some kind of cure for millennials.. If only...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭WoolyJumper

Millennials are people born in the early 80s up to the mid 90's/2000. Millennials are the people who grew up watching friends and I'd argue make up a majority of people who post on boards. It's funny to me that many people who give out about Millennials don't realise they are also Millennials.

Anyway it's true some of the jokes don't translate as well today and are a little outdated. But it was from a different time. I still enjoy the odd episode now and then

That narrow minded cnut comes across as a pitiful, pathetic, joyless, try-hard drip. Appears to be judging the rest of the world by his own disturbing standards.

A very unhappy person I'd imagine.

The cure for millennials is probably yourself to stop getting older.

Young people see fault in the way things were done by their elders. They highlight the problems they see, their elders disagree then die off and things change. Then they grow old and their children highlight faults in the way they do things. Things change and so on.

It's easy to look at other people and spot the problems with their outlook it's much harder to have your own outlook criticised.

Friends was of its time. Gays were less mainstream back then and gay jokes were primitive. If they had lots of black characters it would have been sent as a ethnic comedy (Master of None does a really interesting episode about ethnic characters in shows).

Friends was progressive in its day. Times changed. It's nothing out of the ordinary.
