ye got that right, it’s a rip-off. And in terms of peace of mind, Amazon are better than anyone to deal with if issues arise imo.

And whatever it's 'loaded' with can no doubt be easily sourced for free online. Android TV is just Android - it's not exactly difficult to install whatever you want.

This reminds me of the recent Snes minis, which people were buying and using the free online tools to 'hack' and add additional games, before trying to sell on as 'fully loaded' at a ridiculous mark-up. This kind of practice needs to be stamped out imo.

Anyway - back to the shield. Loving mine at the moment. Only issue I'm having is that Android OS cannot seem to be able to find my network storage (smb). Apps which use their own file explorers can see it just fine (such as Kodi), but Plex can't, which is annoying as I'm hoping to use the Shield as my media server.

Can be got locally, loaded with warranty, e270, know it's not an out and out bargain, but got mine from a guy I buy a lot of electronic gear from, and piece of mind is worth it, best bit of kit I've used, and have had a few android boxes, really recommend 2017 shield

Don't want to pizz oin your parade, but I'm guessing whatever it's loaded with is kodi build/plex/perfect player etc.

They could have been loaded by yourself all for free with the help of Google/ youtube in under a half hour for free.

If your man is throwing in a year's iptv sub or whatever - that's a different story. Maybe you could confirm what exactly its loaded with?

Don't mention any apps that might get you into bother though.

    Try turning off location services

That was already off so what I ended up doing was setting up a UK billing address in my Google payments account and all was ok re watching Amazon prime. However my Google store was changed to sterling so I had to delete that UK billing address and reset my Google play store account so I was back paying through yoyos.

So no more issues re watching Amazon prime and play store is as normal.

Do you need a VPN to get prime working? Or do you just get the limited international selection?

It needs the VPN to get all the programming available else it's as you intimate.

Looking to purchase the NVIDIA Shield 2017 purely for Kodi not Interested in the gaming aspect. Is the amazon deal the best as of today to purchase?

I did the same, but will explore it's other uses over time when I get a chance - looking forward to that! :D The Amazon price is the best I've seen to be honest, don't think you'll find better than that to be honest....

Christ...€270. If I didn't have a conscience I'd be making a fortune selling all kinds of boxes 'fully loaded' to people. :D

I'd order from Amazon because of the customer service.
I had to RMA a gtx 970 with nvidia about 18 months ago and while it wasn't the worst experience Amazon are far better for stuff like that. Any issue they'll send out a new box straight away and give you a prepaid label to return the other within 30 days.

the voice search works, but the full google assistant that you controls your smart home a la google home only works with region set to us!

@moonboy, my iplayer disappears on the region change, so I guess I'll have to sideload the iPlayer app!

iPlayer does indeed work with vpn though, so that's great !

Can you explain how I get iplayer to work using vpn please

A DNS service is far better than a VPN for the UK services.

Thrilled with my Shield so far... using it primarily as a IPTV platform and Plex server. The 1st works great and I can access free-to-air channels in Italy/Spain (for me/wife) in near-HD quality with a fantastic interface (stable, reliable, much easier to use than Kodi). The second is working ok but giving me some issues: menus and navigation is excellent but when streaming large Blu-ray rips (H264, 1080, 7-14GB in size) I often get a message saying "the server is not powerful enough to convert this file" and it starts stuttering. The files should be playing without any conversion given the format is perfectly readable by Plex and the NAS is on the same LAN network. If open the file with VLC on the Shield they play without hiccup. Looked all over the internet for a solution (which is common enough) but most forum threads end without people resolving this. Anybody have the same problem?
If it doesnt work I may just go back to using my Macmini as a server but thought the Shield would be more energy efficient and was looking to sell my Macmini if this worked.

The Remote only set is £143 from both amazon and nvidia direct. Go with Amazon.

Can't help sorry. What's the hardware in the Mini is it better, worse, in particular the network hardware.

Plex server on the Shield should be well able to stream 3-4 1080p transcodes at the same time. The Nvidia tegra chip is a 256 core GPU and Plex is multi threaded so it should be efficient. Check your client and server settings, don't limit bandwidth and set the client to play original. Transcoding audio causes transcoding of video also so try leave that original too.

I'm watching the videos on the same Plex that is being used as the server. The setting are to play the files as original, no transcoding. Audio is also left as original but I've read on the Plex forums that some audio formats need to be converted so possibly that is the reason. Will check. Thanks for the suggestions

What is Plex, I added it to a previous android box but I had no idea how to use it?

Shield is the best streaming device Ive used by a mile, more expensive than the rest but completely worth it.

    Apps I use most are:

    STBEMU / Smart IPTV
    PLEX
    Netflix
    Spotify
    BBC Sport
    Ariel Dream
    RetroX for emulation

I find Kodi pretty brutal these days, not worth the grief compared to Plex which is much more reliable with a decent sub.

If anyone who recently bought the Amazon deal doesn't use their game controller and wants to sell it I would happily take a second one, send me a PM.

Plex is media streaming software, you can stream your own local media or 'friends' media if they're willing to share it, the interface is more like Netflix than kodi with content loading immediately.
