When? Only once in my life have I seen snow from a northerly and that was just after Christmas 2000, I did see a lot of sleet on Christmas Day 2004 and that's about it. The heavy snowfall at the end of Feb 2001 was a n'easterly.
    Other than that - sweet f a.

1.0c here at the moment. Clear with a lot of cirrus.

January 2010, February 2010, December 2010, March 2007, March 2006, October 2008, December 2004, December 1993, December 1999, January 1994, December 1995. I could go on and on with examples.

Northerlies in January and December 2010? You don't get Irish Sea streamers from a northerly.
Temp up from 0.9c to 1.5c now.

(Though the 5th January one is kind of a northeasterly too)

P.S. Never once did we mention Irish Sea streamers in our discussion here, just snow. I've given you examples of us here in Dublin having snow from northerlies.

Anyway, let's get back on topic.

That chart shows snow turning to sleet and then rain as less cold air moves in from the Atlantic.

I wouldn't be sure re. that conclusion.

That pattern has been prevalent with the shower activity all day and the heavy precipitation well inland turned to a wintry mix and snow at lower levels in the midlands.

A single but brilliant flash of white-blue lightning at around 6.45pm this evening as I walking to the shop. Came from a definite NW direction.

That wind combined with the dampness/rain, really is unpleasant to be out and about in tonight

Ballyhaise has risen from 1.0 to 2.6 from 8 to 9 pm, with the dewpoint rising from 0.5 to 1.9. A similar jump at Mullingar.

Some thunderous gusts of wind here now, with 10 min mean speed shooting up to 20 knots in minutes. Where did this come from???

Edit: make that 22 knots mean currently.

The gusts have caused my weather station to lean to the left, that'll be fun to fix!

It is only interesting if there is SNOW.

Everything else is for other threads. So sorry but that's the reality!

A brutal shower just gone through South Laois. Massive boom of thunder overhead - the lightning was very close because the lights flickered and the thunder went off pretty much straight away. Impressive downblast of winds too - the 10 minute average went over 30mph and a 45mph gust was recorded. Immense hail fell throughout. Alot of surfaces white from hail. All happened between 9.30pm and 10pm. Very cold out there. 2.8c/1.6dp. Peak precip rate of 19mm/hr. Total over 11mm for the day now.

Temp climbing from between 2.5c and 2.9c to a balmy 3.9c in the last 90 minutes. Thunder seems to have passed, although we are getting the odd heavy hail shower.
