Jaysus awec you're in for some land man!!

We we lucky that Mount Carmel was 5 mins away and the health insurance covered everything. I was able to tip home and snooze and come back when the going got tough.

First one the contractions started at 6 on a Saturday morning (go back to sleep I'm tired)...hospital at 9 a.m and baby at 10.03 p.m. It'll be a good while before the baby arrives.

Ante natel classes were boring and not much interest to me.

This x 10. If you head in to Holles St at the first hint of a contraction...you'll be told to head home and come back in 24 hours.

Ireland is weird - in NZ (where the first was born), you have a room to yourself for the entire process. In Cork (and the Coombe) there was a shared labour room, then you are whisked off to a private room for the last 30 minutes or so.

Unless you are one of these people wasting thousands of euros on a private obstetrician???

New Zealand is a world leader in all things maternal care. Everything from pre-natal to breastfeeding.

If you get a midwife that's worked or trained in New Zealand you are landed.

Oh and awec, if the waters break head straight in - don't worry about contractions, baby needs to come out as soon as the fluids start leaking.

I would certainly describe it as advanced. The system is very very mid-wife driven, and from time to time there was concern that complicated pregnancies could turn sour, but I think in general it works well.

They have all those things like birthing pools etc (which my wife thought was just fantastic), and there is an extremely high emphasis on breast rather than bottle feeding.

I have a mate who works in obs/gyn and his missus is a midwife (no surprises they met on the job...).

Delivered a few babies myself back in the day :D Ah, those were the good times

We are on the domino scheme so midwives are running the show, no epidural unless needed.

To a certain extent (and having never given birth myself of course), but like all things "pain", the mental side is as important as the physical: I did a wee elective in Mauritius - no such things as epidurals there - and I never had the impression the women were in outrageous pain compared to their European counterparts.

    It's all in the mind...

(*waits for female posters to counter-post*)

I don't think they can actually dictate like that tbh. It's your wifes choice throughout.

Depends. It takes a certain time to put in an epidural etc, so if things suddenly go into speed mode, the horse might already have bolted...

Yeah, there will always be cases like that, but in terms of dictating from the outset I don’t think they can. I know they don’t tend to like epidurals, and I get why, but it’s still the patients choice as long as the option is feasible.

I had kidney stones which doctors say is the equivalent pain of childbirth.

No epidural for MF and back at work the next day.

    Just saying...

Do they not? They were more than happy to provide it for my wife, and there was no hint of midwives or docs being in any way judgmental or against epidurals.

Yeah, yeah, brave man saying it on here. Say it to your wife and come back and tell us how you got on. When you can walk right! :D

I need a large touchscreen monitor and I'm struggling to find any models above 27" that won't break the bank.

Does anyone know a good one, as big as possible for under a grand?

Did you look for refurbs? Usually as good as new, but a good bit cheaper.

Yeah I had actually looked at that one at a few different retailers, but at 27", it's sadly just a bit small - am I naive to think I could get over the 30" mark without exponentially increasing the price?

unless your willing to look at china... im not sure youll get anything at all at 32" for less than 1k.

Why do you want a touchscreen? The image quality on them on larger monitors tends to be a bit guff.

Picture quality isn't actually that important - we need a screen to present very simple visual targets for stroke patients to point at, the larger the surface area the better, as it encourages them to use both hands. Our main concern is how accurate/precise they are, so the spatial resolution of the actual touch capture is the main thing, not the picture quality.

I'd say 30" may even do it. How would one look at china? I am so out of the loop on buying tech these days, the first site I looked at was overclockers.co.uk - retro, I know.

I had them a few months ago too - ended up having to call the non-emergency helpline and they told me to go to hospital and organised an appointment (this was at 11pm).
It had all passed by the time i got to the hospital. Felt like a fraud by the time i was there, but jesus it had incapacitated me!

Thanks - that looks like a contraption you clip onto an actual screen, right?

    from china....

have you considered if a touch screen kit overlaid over a TV screen would work?

you could you turn a large screen into a touch sceen for a fraction of the price.r
