I really can't think of any culture as hung up about nudity as Ireland, England and USA.
(no doubt, there's are some, though)[/quote]

    Ammm.. .the entire Islamic world?

    Ever been in a hamam?
Mixed nudity, no. Same sex nudity, no problem.

It's not like it's acceptable to walk down the street nude, in Stockholm!

Everywhere, it's is only acceptable in culturally appropriate places.

I would argue that the entire Islamic world is far more comfortable with same sex nudity than Irish people are, generally.

Why are quotes behaving so strangely?

"Hang up" implies uptight, repressed. It's a thinly veiled insult. If a person isn't into anything else, it's not viewed as uptight, just a personal preference.

But when it comes to the naked body, oh all the big guns about repression have to get trotted out tediously.

Yeah the out of shape naked body of a stranger is not beautiful to everyone.

pado messed them up by not putting a quote tag before his first quote of yours. :)

If someone has a strong aversion to seeing another person's naked body, then I genuinely think that there is a level of uptightness and repression. I genuinely do.

It seems to be quite common in our society.

I think you're reading too much into it. People just don't wanna see it. That's why it's not permitted in public no matter what country. The fact it's only permitted in certain contexts shows it's some bit niche.

I haven't done it naked but I've been to a sauna in Finland recently. I was in two minds as to whether to go or not as, truth be told, I didn't want to go nude or be the only guy wearing swim shorts in the place. Turns out it was a mixed sauna where swimwear was required. I'm glad I went too, the experience was something else - 5 to 10 mins in the sauna, then straight out for a dip in the freezing Baltic sea. Very refreshing - the finns really have it down to a T - it's a social thing there. Sauna for a bit, then into the sea, then sit by the fire with a beer and have the chats, rinse and repeat. A terrific way to socialise IMO.

Having said that, the saunas I was in were so bloody hot that even if a stunning blonde walked in in her birthday suit and sat beside you, the last thing on your mind is sex. It's more like "holy **** I can hardly breath, must hold on longer, am I passing out? Oh Jesus. Oh god they're adding more water to the heater HOLY F*CK".

I think the aversion to it in the anglophone world today is more to do with out of shape naked bodies rather than just naked bodies. I think people would be more receptive to firm, toned nudity - because there is an emphasis on the body beautiful via media saturation in anglophone culture (despite high levels of obesity also!)

I would obviously enjoy the sight very much of a naked man who's toned and muscular. I'd even like the sight of a naked woman who's in great shape too.

But most people (including me) aren't that way built and the sight of flabby, saggy, droopy bits? Put em away!

Why would it be repressed not to want to see e.g. a naked obese person?

Yes, I find that a bikini or a pair of briefs does a great job of covering up flabby, saggy, droopy bits!

It seems that your body issues go much deeper than being hung up about nudity.

And you need to work on your tendency to throw insults. :)

Not wanting to see lardy naked people (which most people don't - you're the minority) - must mean deep body issues, obv.

I know you think you're SO enlightened - but your views actually come across as quite bigoted. And extremely judgemental. But that's OK because it's the "right" kind of judgemental.

And I don't think you actually want to see naked out of shape people either.

    Point out one insult.
You may have taken much offense, but where did I use an insult.
    Uptight, is not an insult.
    Repressed is not an insult.
Saying someone has a hang up is not an insult.
Saying someone has body issues is not an insult.

Referring to someone as lardy, is rather insulting, though.

And it's about wanting to see naked people (in or out of shape), it's about not caring. They are just people's bodied. No big deal.

So you and others keep saying but I think you actually do get it really. Not everyone wants to see others in the nip. It's not being hung up and it's not just Irish and English people. It's just not something people want to see unless it's their partner. Some people prefer to keep it private and intimate, which is no better or worse than enjoying naturism.

Which would be fair enough, but it's this nudty=SEX!! thing that I find a bit childish. Also, nto mamy posters have actually said that.
You are so much more sophisticated and better than others obviously. Where are the attitudes you're talking about anyway? In these discussions people are so feverishly anticipating "immature" attitudes that they see them when they aren't there.

Dunno where you're getting the "sophisticated" line from. There's nothing sophsiticaed about it. As for the attitudes, see below:
too many willies for my liking.. but do what makes you smile :)

I'm Irish. With Irish skin. 2 minutes in a well lit room can give me 2nd degree burns. So I think I'll spare my goolies that little horror if its all the same with you.

(Just on that last line: I'm an artist, so I see them all the time)

So yeah - boners, willies, flabby bits, lardy naked people and panther tails. While I can see the banter angle, I'd consider that at best wildly uninformed and at worst immature. It's not exactly encouraging for body-awareness and body-positivity and that can't be healthy.

And as for PacMan here, I have nooooo idea what he's talking about, what he thinks saunas are or how he thinks the experience "wears thin".

Anyway, Prude Tracy, this is getting rather repetitive and boring. You think I am judgemental, bigoted and So enlightened (I suspect sarcasm there).
I think you have a hangup about nudity, are repressed and uptight with a very unhealthy attitude towards fat people.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 162 ✭✭Prune Tracy

But lots of those were just jokes. People joke about anything - why suddenly the po faced "Oh we need to be mature!" thing around nudity?

Champions of nudity can also equate it with sex when they throw out the tedious "Irish people are so sexually repressed" lines in this discussion. And genitals are sex organs no matter that way you swing it (pun intended).

Nothing wildly uninformed with thinking "cover up" - this is why it's not permitted anywhere to be naked wherever you feel like. It's not actually the norm so what's so difficult to grasp about people not liking the sight?
    Point out one insult.

Uptight is of course an insult - and a description. Same with lardy. I didn't address anyone here as lardy though.

Yeah work away with nude activities but there is nothing uptight about people (the majority) not being into it.

    Prude Tracy
But you're not throwing insults. ;)

I'd like to add smug and arrogant to describing your posts also.

A very unhealthy attitude towards fat people because of not wanting to see naked fat people, a view that most people share? Sure thing. That's "unhealthy" (as opposed to the healthiness of being overweight).

People who talk about how brilliant they are for being nudists are always so insufferable in that regard tbh. And so predictable. Always with the completed bingo card of "prude", "repressed", "uptight", "hang-up", "catholic guilt", "Irish". Change the formula folks - really. You're as stuck in a mindset as those you enjoy calling (and feeling so superior to) prudes.

I used to fish from rocks a lot. I'd have a light spinning rod and a bag of lures, and would be clambering from spot to spot. A few times when it got too hot I stripped off and had a swim to cool down. It does feel fairly liberating to be honest. Also it's nice to sit on the rocks and dry in the sun afterward. What isn't nice is cutting your foot on the rocks while climbing out.

Bloody hell - you think I've got some sense of misinformation and superiority and you come put with this bul****...?? The only word I'd agree with out of that lot is "hang-up" and even then I wouldn't judge people for it (as long as they were respectful to others). I think you're trying to bend peoples' opinions here to fit your pre-conception.

    FTR - it's not prudish, it's more overly-modest.

No one should knock it til they try it. Most people who do are surprised by how enjoyable it is. If you dont enjoy it, grand, its not for you and you can move on. But dont be telling other people that the are using cliches etc etc if you have never experienced what they are talking about
For me. It's the only way to swim or sunbathe

How many women do it when they go to Spain? A fair few I would say. Go to a country where it isn't looked down upon. Look at Nordic countries where neighbours come into your sauna and sit there naked and chat. What is wrong whit being naked? Half the world has the same body as you, admittedly in different shapes. Go try it, anyone know of a good nudist beech in Ireland???
