Felt absolutely nothing there. The man was throwing up death flags like confetti and it was such a blatant attempt to pull an Aeris. Then because the game has no balls since it's a corporate exercise, they replace him seconds later with a guy with the exact same skill set.

That was ridiculous, and Albert even starts with the exact same level Lavitz was on before he died. It seemed very early in the game to be killing off a main character didn't it?

Decided to give Shinobi X a proper blast last night. I've played it before but only really just for 5 or so minutes, then discarding it as a digitised mess.

    - I was wrong.
Okay well, visually it is still a bit of a digitised graphical mess. And the FMV scenes are so bad they're hilarious.

But if you can see passed the dodgy actors and ridiculous outfits, there's something there that's actually quite enjoyable. The fighting and controls, although they're quite a bit looser than previous Shinobi games, are really fun and there's a real sense of manic sword play.

I'm dropping €450 on a HTC Vive kit on Friday...

    ...any recommendations for games folks?

Already have the Star Trek game and Elite Dangerous planned.

Blade Runner Replicant Pursuit looks to be worth checking out.

Yeah I had a lot of fun with it. It's no Revenge or Shinobi 3 but not much gets close to those two.

My god though does it look awful.

That moment in the industrial level where the big Dinosaur head just swoops down out of nowhere completely out of context has to be one of the biggest 'WTF' moments in gaming :D

Just watched part of Shinobi X's opening cutscene, and I can definitely describe it as cheesy.

Finished Secret of Mana, took around 20 hours maybe a little more. Got to say I enjoyed it a lot more than another well known action RPG Terranigma which is massively overrated imo. Challenge wise it's pretty easy altho some bosses are challenging, I spent no time leveling spells but did try to kill enemies when they were on screen, I think I finished up around level 65 or so.

Secret Mana was originally designed for the snes cd and when it got cancelled a huge chunk of the game had to be removed to fit on a rom cartridge. The game has some technical problems as a result, the music gets a little distorted at times and there is slowdown in areas where there shouldn't be, like walking around villages. Overall though it's a lovely game, great graphics and music with good charm. A lot of the cut out content like time travel went towards Chrono Trigger, if you look at Chrono and Marle's sprites from that game they look very similar to the boy and girl in SOM.

Thinking of playing Treasure of the Rudras next which was a SFC exclusive from Square. I'd give SOM an 8/10 overall, same score as Mario RPG the last one I played. With a proper translation it might be a 9.

Decided to get the 20th Anniversary edition of Duke Nukem 3D during the Steam Autumn Sale. I normally play it with the EDuke32 sourceport, which seems to have tighter mouse controls from my experience, despite not allowing 20th Anniversary features like True 3D and the enhanced texture and lighting system.

From what I've played, it's a very enjoyable title. It's got the fast-paced action and charm you'd come across from many '90s FPS games.

I picked Duke up on the ps4 a few months back. Thoroughly enjoyed it and it was my first (and to date, only) platinum trophy.
Duke 3d has a particular nostalgia buzz for me as it was the first game I got for my PS1 back in the day

While I own multiple copies of Duke 3D, including the one on the PS3/360 afaik, I still prefer Quake.

Duke 3D opens brilliantly but gets a bit dull half way through. One of the first 18s games I got my hands on for the PS1 when I was 14 or 15, Thought I was deadly :D

I remember really enjoying the PSOne exclusive episode in that version.

Agreed, it suffers from Shareware syndrome where the shareware episodes are front loaded with all the good ideas and levels and the rest of the game isn't as good. As Build engine games go Shadow Warrior, and even more so, Blood are far better games.

No matter how you look at Duke 3D, whether you think it deserves its praise or not, it did give us the Build engine after all.

I'm only halfway through the first episode, so I can't say anything about its later episodes.

The build engine was actually first used in Ken's Labyrinth by the build engine creator Ken Silverman.

I'll just take off my pedants hat.

So that proves my point moot.

Played a bit of Altered Beast on Megadrive last night.

I'm ashamed to say I'd never played the game before. Looks a bit blurry at the moment without my incoming rgb cable but still playable and I liked it !!

Cool how you turn into different animals. First boss is mental. Throwing heads or something at ya is bizarre but in keeping with the games style.

I can only imagine how cool this must have been as a launch game.

Altered Beast gets a bad rap but when it came out it was undeniably really impressive. Belt scrolling action games are a fun genre that doesn't get enough love as well. Not giving the player the choice of stopping lends them a certain rhythm like a shmup.

    Good analogy on the shmup.

Yeah I saw online it didn't get a lot of love which I thought was a bit odd alright.

Oh Christ no. That game is garbage. You've so much better to choose from on the megadrive.

As a launch title it was amazing with the massive sprites but now it looks far from arcade perfect and since the new sheen has worn off you realise it's just as awful as the arcade game it was ported from.

Seems a bit harsh but I know there's better games out there.

I just always wanted to play it and never had a chance.

I'm going to try and pick up games like that where I didn't get a chance to play when I had the console as a kid.

Cool spot is another one that I know most think isn't great but I'm dying to play it.

The trick with Altered Beast is play it on extra hardest setting.. did you have to put in a code to unlock it I forget? They throw loads more enemies into the mix and it gets quite frantic. It's still fair, if somewhat memory testy, which I don't think the arcade version is as much.

You have to look at first couple of years of MD titles in the context of their time. The colour palette looks kind of ugly till they found some workarounds but it was TONS of colour back then.

The forced/belt scroller I like best on the MD is Wonderboy III: Monster Lair. Again, maligned by a lot of people nowadays, I've seen it turn up on lists of worst Mega Drive games, but I must have completed it a 100 times. Again, the extra hard mode is where it's at. Throws extra enemies into the mix you don't even seen in the regular game.

Altered beast isn't a total train wreck. I just find it really shallow and boring. Much better games to play.

Get yourself Gunstar Heroes and Rocket Knight Adventure's!

Cool Spot isn't a bad game but it's not great either. Real middle of the road platformer. The problem with it is all the dave perry games use the same engine and all feel the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,004 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

Yeah I've never been mad on the Dave Perry platformers either although they're very good as European platformers go. The visuals are very slick but repeat from screen to screen so much (memory restrictions?) the levels aren't very memorable. Either that or the level design just isn't great in general.

Ran through Final Fight 3 last night. While probably overshadowed by SOR 2, it's still a really enjoyable beat em up with lots of moves and extra abilities. Although FF3 does have more than 3 enemies on screen at times, the FF series on the snes could have been much better if they used smaller sprites so they could have more enemies consistently. Games like turtles in time managed it easily.

Capcom for the most part used fairly shoddy programming and rushed a lot of games onto the snes, Konami will always be king of that era imo.

Sim city on the snes. Left it running for two weeks and my city is at metropolis level 😂, almost 100k in the bank too.

When I tried that as a kid I was told to turn off the console, only had the telly in the sitting room so my games of sim city would only last hours.

Am I being glib in saying Konami built a beat-em-up dynasty on the back of essentially re-skinning the same well-made game with different popular licenses?
