Have 25 hours put into Xanadu Next on the PC and it's quite simply one of the best action RPGs I've ever played. Falcom just have a knack for this genre and nobody can top them.

Still have my original Game Boy, which is still functional. Having come across it in one of my drawers, I decided to give Tetris a go.

I'm proud to own a console that still functions nearly 30 years on.

I've a 40 year old Atari Pong console that still works, still needs a new potentiometer in one of the controls, but otherwise it is still perfect. All it needed was a fresh set of D cells!

My oldest is probably either the NES or the Game Boy.

My first real console was the N64, and I didn't get the NES until much later. I did get a Game Boy pretty soon after my N64.

Munching my way through Castlevania - Symphony of the Night, on the Playstation 1. Only console where I hadn't ventured, for Castlevania.

..with the gift of hindsight, I remember this title lingering on shop shelves a good bit, it didn't seem to do as well as expected?

Maybe just the format, the CD seeking between levels is brief, but noticeable.

I've played the first Castlevania, Super Castlevania IV and this. It's awesome. My favourite out of the three I've played.

I'd take CD-quality audio over short load times any day.

In the era of 3D games, nobody wanted a sprite based 2D plattormer unfortunately.

I completely missed out on it during the PS1s lifespan, only played through it ten or so years later.

UK magazines were always not so enamoured by Castlevania and Megaman. I remember a Megaman X review in a U.K. Mag and they gave it 6 out of 10. I was perplexed as I loved the Megaman games I played on the NES.

With symphony of the night I was randomly browsing through a magazine and saw a review for SotN. Thought it looked incredible in screenshots then I got to the score. 7 out of 10. Would have put me off it if I had a PS1. When I did get a PS1 the game had become impossible to find. Only got a copy when a relative of mine turned out to be an accountant at Konami and sent me a spare review copy.

It was much more highly rated in the US.

As for the load times, SotN has the best loading screen ever. Loved messing around with the loading sign while I waited.

Those review scores perplex me too. I cannot get my head around why they rated it so low.

Never knew I could mess with the loading sign.

Been playing Metal Gear Solid today for the first time in almost 20 years. Dug out my original PS1 for the occasion.

I've been a little scared to revisit it as it played such a huge part in my early teen gaming years and I was afraid time might not have been kind...

Still absolutely amazing! In fact it's quite something to go back and play a 3D game of this vintage which just got so many things right. From what I can see the framerate is pretty solid too, the action is still really fast paced and mountains of fun.

I agree, this still holds up really well today! It really was ground breaking for it's time.

I played it for the first time ever last year and enjoyed my time. I anticipated not being able to get into it without nostalgia for it but it surprised me. I remember thinking at points "Jesus, this came out in 1998!"

I don't think the intro of that game has been bettered by many games after it. It is just.. so right, in every way. Credits and reveal, segueing the player into the game.

I agree with everything said on here MGS on the playstation one was easily one of my favorite gaming experiences of my life , Just a really perfect game in so many ways

Also, can we bring back this?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,416 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

What people don't realise is that MGS is a near note for note remake of Metal Gear: solid snake. That game is amazing but that fact also doesn't detract from how good MGS is. It improves on it in many ways especially how it makes full use of 3D environments.

God I had more fun with the demo of that game than I got out of most modern triple A games!

Best intro on the PS1.... if Vagrant Story didn't exist.

That was taken from Policenauts. The cross over between both of those games is pretty weird!

What's the best version of policenauts?
I've seen theres a few ports and they all seem to be censored in some way

So... We're not going to mention Twin Snakes then? The remaster on the GC of MGS?
Or is it the ugly cousin one was forced to take to the debs and now want to deny ever existed?
    Asking for a friend......

I've never actually played Twin Snakes, is it still ridiculously expensive?

Actually, speaking of stupidly expensive, anyone see what Snatcher is going for these days? After my recent MGS buzz I thought I'd finally buy a copy. ( I was going to pick up one on adverts.ie for about 150 a few years ago but let it go)

Holy hell, there are BIN ended auctions where people have paid almost £400!

I scooped it up for around 45-50 euros

Not mad expensive. It does happen to be one of the rare GameCube titles.

I own it but I haven't played it yet, I was late to the party on MGS games so I've been playing through them in the last few years, I'm on Metal Gear Rising at the moment, when I finish that I'll play through MGSV and I'm leaving Twin Snakes to play through at the end!

From the games I've played so far I've loved all of them but I think it's between 1 and 3 as to which is my favourite!

I picked that up a few years ago, as it's a game that had a huge impact on me when I first played it many moons ago. Mega-money, but expensive because it's uncommon, and thus, unlikely to start going down any time soon. I got the NTSC-U version of it, as that's the version I had when I was younger.

I guess it's just shocking to see the price increase from cira 150 euro to over 500 in a matter of 2-3 years. And annoying as it's been on my to buy list for so long, I just never got around to it!

I guess it falls in line with all of the other astronomical price increases as of late.

Will just have to stick with my CD-R copy :(

Edit - you got to experience that first time around as a kid? Wow! I can only imagine what you made of it alright, nothing else like it at the time.
