Anybody got some good Steam racing game recommendations that aren't too graphically intensive? There must be some cool indie ones that passed me by. I bought Flatout 2 a while ago and I'm not enjoying it quite as much as I recall doing on the PS2.

I've been playing the original Deus Ex (or Dooz Ex, as you called it in the year 2000) lately, and I can certainly say it's grown on me. When I started playing it, I wasn't the biggest fan of it. But once I grasped the near future seen from the year 2000 vibe (the year it was released), I started getting more interested in it.

Me, I'm playing a bit of Metal Slug X, Micromachines, Einhander via PSP and about to play some Daytona on the Saturn, anyone else?

I've been playing Daytona on the Xbox 360, it's a really good version :)

I thought for a sec this was the first page... but the 1st post wasn't quoted in the 2nd post on that page.

Lots of fun but, oddly, I have a love of the original Saturn version, even though there were obvious limitations and poor implementation, the game was fantastic, certainly considerably better than the later released edition, which looked better but just wasn't Daytona.

I always wanted a Saturn back then, I can imagine it's always going to be your favourite version :)

I also had the arcade version emulated with m2emulator, but it's not quite perfect; I read the 360 was the closest to the arcade so bought it in a sale. I think it's no longer available due to licensing issues, the same happened with OutRun; I really hope we see and OutRun 3 :D

Don't think Sega have the development talent/budget/interest to spend on something like Outrun 3. It's the reason they outsourced the new Daytona to some third tier UK developer.

I'm just hoping as Sega announced they would be bringing back some old franchises; I think the team behind Sonic and Sega All Star Racing Transformed (quite the title) would do a good job with OutRun :D

Sumo Digital are probably the premier developer in the UK now. They're making Forza, Dead Island and Crackdown games. Everything they put out gets 9/10's.

Has anyone played the games that pioneered the immersive sim genre?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,413 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Wasn't Ultima Underworld the originator? I played old school System Shock not so long ago. Other than an archaic control scheme that tries to do WASD before WASD, it's an absolutely cracking game still. The recent releases fix the control issues.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭wheresmahbombs

Yep, it was the granddaddy of immersive sims. Wish it supported mouselook. Correct me if I'm wrong. Are there any mods out there that can enhance Ultima Underworld?
I have the Enhanced Edition of System Shock, which I didn't get long ago, and other than a weird interface, things have been fine so far.
Out of the old-school immersive sims, Deus Ex is my favourite so far, and its post-mortem (https://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/131523/postmortem_ion_storms_deus_ex.php) was the origin of the term 'immersive sim'.

Well the System shock enhanced edition is just the old game with a fan patch licensed and applied (system shock portable). Pretty sure there is a similar patch for the underworld games as they use a less sophisticated version of the same engine.

    Edit: Hmm, I think there isn't a mod :(

I'd love if there was a patch for the two UU games, as their pitfall is their controls and interface, which keeps me from playing them for long sessions.

I'm playing Super Mario Land on my GameBoy Color I just received today, for the first time in years.

Great game, but Super Mario Land 2 is amazing, such an evolution of the previous title.
I would recommend Links Awakening Dx and the DKLand games as well.

    Master of the Universe

Just realised I've never actually played the Donkey Kong Land!

Must try and hunt down a cart and give it a go on the Super Gamyboy, I see it enhances the visuals somewhat.

I’d agree with that, I bought the second one also.

It's like a watered down version of Donkey Kong Country so a bit meh but worth a play.

It's impressive given they managed to shoe horn the visuals onto the Gameboy, looks best on the GB Pocket and the GBA:SP, very nice indeed.
And there's three of them, on lovely banana yellow carts, I have them all, collected over the years.
A nice counterpart to the Snes trilogy.

I wouldn't say they look lovely. The 4 colour pre rendered visuals are kind of horrible, they kind of need a super Gameboy to look nice. They did cram in an impressive amount of animation though.

Technologically speaking DKC and the Gameboy games are actually very simple. Really basic programming going on there. Super Mario World is a far more advanced game. (DKC2 and 3 do have some more impressive visual effects so they did improve in that regard).

There's no fuss. It's out and out garbage, particularly the input lag in the fight scenes. The best thing about it is how awful the localisation is.

Oh, when you get further in the game you have to swap discs to go to different areas.

I have a Game Boy and a GBC, but I don't know what happened to my GBC. I have Super Mario Land, Zelda: Link's Awakening, GTA, Mortal Kombat, The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, and maybe a few others. Out of those, Link's Awakening is probably my favourite. SML is also a very solid game.

It can be a pain to play the Game Boy as it lacks a backlight.

Gameboy library has been severely overlooked. I wish Jeremy Parish would hurry up with his Gameboy World series as it's unearthed a wealth of hidden gems on the system. It just gets completely ignored as a system.

So far I'm quite enjoying it. That's despite the diabolical translation and the NPC's who look like they were created for a net yaroze game. I'm liking the pacing of the story and the music is quite good. Poor Lavitz though :(

    Poor Lavitz though :(

Felt absolutely nothing there. The man was throwing up death flags like confetti and it was such a blatant attempt to pull an Aeris. Then because the game has no balls since it's a corporate exercise, they replace him seconds later with a guy with the exact same skill set.
