A Freesat box will not give you Saorview so you will have multiple remotes and boxes and have to switch sources to go between them. The triple tuner version of the Formuler F1 will do all of the above and costs half the price of a connect box.

I want 2 terrestrial tuners as well as 2 for sat.

Humax free view hd box for Saorview and a humax freesat box in cork

Humax freesat box as well in belfast with now tv

Future plan for an aerial pointing south for Saorview

AFAIK only the very high-end boxes offer 2 terrestrial tuners putting you into the €300+ range. Just how often would you need to watch/record something on RTÉ 1+ 2 at the same time and is it worth that much to you?

It happens here quite often ..... but then there is more than one person watching TV most evenings.

Not often but the odd time I would need it, it would be a pain not to have it. If I had a recording set up for rte 2 the other half wouldn't be able to watch rte1 and if I was away from the house it would cause hassle.

I guess I also have to factor in buying a 2nd box to stream the channels in a 2nd room. That drives up the cost.

You can always use the TV tuner to watch Saorview as well as the box. Many Tvs also have basic recording options these days.

What software for the box? Openvix or? I have no idea on these.

In 2011, when Saorview was on test (before it was called Saorview), STBs were being sold at €100 plus which I thought was way more than reasonable. I took it on myself to import a good quality box which worked well with the service and was sold for approx €50. It arrived with the purchaser in a plug and go configuration which was just what was required. Despite some posters on here projecting the units catching fire and not working, it was very well received and I had no complaints.

I still have two working perfectly with some older tvs.Never had any issues.

Sorry are you saying that Humax Freeview box will work with Soarview?

I wonder will red button services on saorview connect be offered over the air or through broadband?

I have a Humax 1100 and a Samsung hdr (bdh8900), one remote does both, both units have 7 day epg, series link, wifi, RTE +3 players, netflix, youtube, switching between is straighforward on a one4all remote.
Both are duel tuner, 4 programmes could be record in needed.

My issue with this is that I have an old tv with just one hdmi input. I use a hdmi splitter to use other devices like a chromecast. The picture on my tv is getting a bit blurred with patchy lines so it may need to be upgraded at some stage.

Getting a freesat box connected to the hdmi splitter would be more hassle.

I have had further issues with the Connect box this weekend.
Sometimes when I revert from satellite to saorview the channel won't load up and I have to press the up/down channel button to get it back.

I also have had issues with the same while in the on demand mode. If I press the Home button the Ssorview won't load.

In all fairness, you must have got the vibe from the thread that were not a buying proposition.

If you think you can get rid of it or return it, then dont make the same mistake twice. Bear in mind that there is a bit of a learning curve wth e2 boxes.

Well I would have thought the thing would at least function properly.

A couple of other things from playing with the box tonight.

There seems to be no way of creating favourite lists in the satellite section. You can only move/hide channels from the one list. For some reason all the radio channels are in with the tv satellite channels. There is no tv/radio button like there was on the Triax.

The On Demand/Catch up section is not too bad but I haven't had time to use it a lot.

Does the satellite section have all epg information for all channels when you enter that section or do you have to click on channels to activate transponder information?

    Click on channels first.
The satellite section is really poor. They clearly haven't bothered their arse with it.

It is the same as the non Freesat section on the official Freesat boxes. A complete afterthought.

What non freesat channels would be viewable as in decent?

I've no idea. I only used it a couple of times to view UTV as I use a London postcode on the box. I would not think there is much of quality missing.

Ya I am still thinking about a freesat box.
Does the remote allow you to change the hdmi input for the tv?

Yes, with the remote in tv mode the pause button is the source button on a Humax.

I have the older HDR-1000s and the remote does not allow this. I believe, though am not sure, that the later model HDR-1100s would do what you want. To be sure you could ask on http://www.myhumax.org/forum

I have a hdmi splitter with 3 inputs.
My current triax combi goes into one slot and a chromecast into the 2nd.

At the moment when I want to use the chromecast I just switch it on at the wall and it takes precedence.

I wonder how this will work if I plug in a freesat box to the last hdmi slot? The splitter has no remote just a button on it to switch.

Will I end up having to press the button to change the inputs?

Depends on the switch. My Satellite box activates the switch when recording in standby.

You can get a cheapo HDMI switch with a remote control posted to your door for under a fiver. I was going to velcro one to the back of the remote but didn't bother in the end.

    Hi Tiger,

Im in a similar situation to yourself.

However I'm not spending money until my 10 year old TV stops working.

When that happens I'll buy a Saorview/Sat tuner TV
    3-4 hdmi inputs
    4k
Smart or android TV for players.

Will use a Humax freesat HDR for English channels.

Connect usb hardrive for recording RTE etc on TV.

You might be better off waiting till you need a new TV rather than buying different boxes that may not work out.
