Which is more worth a watch first ?

Haven't seen 'The Sinner' yet but watched 'Alias Grace' last week & loved it. It's pretty short so it doesn't take long to get through, but when it finished I couldn't help wishing there was more to come.

Both are excellent. Quite different but both really good, hard to recommend since it is so much an individual preference thing.

I preferred Alias Grace, but i had read the novel and I love anything by Margaret Atwood, so that was almost an inevitability.

Disappointed this isn't in any cinemas here. They seem to be doing bare minimum to qualify for Oscars with about 20 cinemas in the US showing it. Still looking forward to seeing it though.

Really enjoyed The Sinner and would recommend it, the only thing I felt was it was a little drawn out in parts. Other then that a really good series!

I actually read an interesting article about how Stranger Things kept it's 4 female characters completely separate for 99% of season 2 and how it's a habit a lot of genre TV/films have. Even shows that have multiple female leads rarely let them interact.

I came across this recently, it's called the 'Bechdel Test'

I've heard of that, it's not the most accurate of things but it does point out how many films and TV shows are really bad at having female characters interact with each other. I'll see if I can find the Stranger Things article but it makes an interesting point about Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The director of that said the film was going to destroy the Bechdel Test because they had so many "strong female characters" in it but when the person who wrote the article timed the female screen time, in a 2 hour film, there was only about 2 minutes that passed it.

Anyway, my only point about iZombie was they had a female lead who never interacted with any other women. Her police partner, the lab guy or the initial bad guy could easily have been a female character.

And again, just to be clear, it's not a slight on the characters or the actors paying them, it was just something that really stood out to me, more so than it did in anything else.

Always thought the Bechdel test was a pretty brain dead concept. Whether a film passes it or not doesn't make it any more likely the female characters will be weak or strong really.

Exactly. For me it served more as a tool for showing how many films don't have them interact at all. There are plenty of films that would pass the test but are still rubbish. Likewise there are plenty of films that wouldn't pass but still have well written female characters and are good films.

I look at the bechdel test as more of a test of representation. I mean women make up 50% of the population so when a movie has female characters that never interact it's just not a fair representation. Whereas if you did a similar test with male characters pretty much every film/TV show ever made would pass with flying colours. Of course there are films where I think it's acceptable that it doesn't pass eg war films or prison films where it's accurate that the vast majority of characters will be male.

It's a very blunt tool though. If two woman talk about defeating a male antagonist to save the world, that fails the test but if they talk about how nice their shoes are, that passes the test.

Ive never seen ANY line of duty, ill try and episode tonight.

Happy Valley is up there in my top ten, i loved it.

Here’s the thing about line of duty. It’s a police procedural. And a good one. The acting is good to great (the female guest stars being the greats). It’s got the twists you would expect in a modern police drama. It’s got detective work and car chases. It deals with elite corruption, coverups, and other weighty themes.

What’s going to keep you coming back though is the episodes (most of them) when 4 people go into a room and have an interview.

Glad to hear that. It's getting great reviews, has a real chance of being Netflix's first Oscar contender.

Thought 'The Sinner" was so contrived in the end but entertaining.
'Alias Grace', entertaining but too short. Loved 'Unhappy Valley'. It's hard to please everyone(looking at myself).

Does anybody know where the forum for the online TV programmes went to? Was looking to see what the early reactions to The Punisher were like.

    This too shall pass.

1922. Another Netflix/Stephen King adaptation about the gruesome year in the life of a farmer in middle America. If you have a phobia about rats, avoid. Otherwise a good story.
