So do we still need to connect to an aerial for the likes of rte1 and rte2 etc.. or will/can it be done via a satellite dish and broadband ? Right now where I am I do have a dish that I can view the UK channels on a set top box but an indoor aerial is not sufficient to view the irish channels on my soarview enabled tv. I'd need an outdoor aerial and can't get an installer, seems hard to believe but it's true. Be great to be able to attached the sky dish to this and view all the channels.

The Saorview channels are not FTA on Astra satellite, so no to that.

The broadband service seems to be catch-up only, and for a selection of programmes, not everything.

All info at this time points to needing an aerial and satellite connection to get all the FTA channels.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

You can roll back to watch something if you have missed it. This will cover that need until 2018.

But only certain programmes. Not all shows are available on roll-back as far as I'm aware.

Power city real time stock should give an indicator of demand.
Full stock was 8 per store except for one that had 10 and three had zero.

If that's the case, then some lunatic in Bray has gone and bought one.

....right lads, own up - who was it?! :D

We need somebody with €200 to spare to buy one and test out what it really can/can’t do!

Just popped in to a DID store while out to buy the morning paper - No sign of any Saorview Connect STB's....what does that say?

The long-running promo has disappeared from Saorview TV Information Channel 23 and been replaced with a static (outdated) service list. I wonder if it will be replaced with a new promo to include Connect?

Only from Saorview. What if you want to record a satellite channel?

So wait... there is no PVR at launch?! Insanity.

If they added €70 to the price and used that extra money to buy up all the existing Walker PVR stock around the country to take off the market it just might be a success.

do not connect anything to sat2 - it is reserved for possible future upgrades. Must be going to give you the option of watching one sat channel and recording another at some stage by 2020 or so....

When you see the pics of the interface and showtimebit reminds me so much of a humax non pvr freesat box - how they can justify a price of €200 v £90 beats me

Yep - Funny that. Good old inflated pricing for sole Irish market based items, no doubt based on some dodgy exchange rate....Same as the Walker Saorview PVR box. That came out at about €200+ and then dropped in price to less than €90 in Powercity. No doubt still sold at a profit at €90...

Expert.ie shops have Saorview Connect at just under the €200 mark too.....amazing those retailers who have it online are all the same price....FIX...ing?

Looking at the manual, it would appear as if the satellite functionality is very manual – along the lines of what a generic receiver would be capable of. Whether this is any better in reality, we won’t know until somebody gets their hands on one of the boxes.

I guess all these shops will sell it for the RRP, as demand for it won't be that high to bring in large bulk discount orders to allow them to lower the price. The cynic in me would say they wouldn't lower it anyhow... :D

From the screen grabs, it looks like roll-back will be limited to RTE and and on-demand to RTE and TG4.

At least the Walker is a proper pvr and at €90 it isn't bad value, compared to €200 for a doorstop.

Checking the Powercity website - seems that 2 have been sold at Sallynoggin, and 2 sold at Bray. I wonder were they all sold to people like us, or did unsuspecting members of the public fall for the big sell.

JDxtra - where did you find that image? I presume you're not one of the four?! That channel line up is actually not too bad, provided that the HD versions are shown (where available) and it managed to do that by itself.

It's a screen grab from a video posted on Facebook by Expert Electrical Tullamore.

    Thanks Jon.

That looks like a predefined channel list. Probably a default userlist binary file.

You see the way the data isnt loaded for UTV Ch4 etc. Thats because the Now/Next EPG only loads for the channel as you enter the transponder those channels are on and obviously not all channels are on the one tp.

    Welcome back to 2003.

Pictures of the insides, when someone gets one. @ Tony no more NDA excuses!

I've been trying to figure out what the capabilities of the 'app' are and all I get is, it is a remote control app for the box which can be used on a phone.

It’s probably like the Humax freesat app, which is basically just that, a remote control for the box, so you set reminders and records from the app.

This box seems be be exactly like the Humax 1100 that I have, but without the built in hard drive. So €200 seems pretty steep for that.

Static list of channels now gone - instructional videos in its place

Don't think I'll jettison my Humax 1100s and Fox HDR-FOX T2 for the time being.

I have a few questions here regarding the installation of Saorview Connect without broadband & for older Saorview equipment. What happens to users of Saorview who have no broadband in their house at all in their house? I use mobile broadband from Eir Mobile & use Saorview with FTA Satellite. For myself & others who are in that situation; will I have to stick with original Saorview until it stops getting official support whenever it dies?

Will Saorview Connect act as a complimentary service or a compulsory one which means that consumers will have to replace all Saorview equipment in their homes? Saorview did not answer this question properly when I looked up their FAQ's on their website. My current setup for Saorview is a Panasonic Quintrix widescreen TV (rear projection & no HDMI connection) & the Triax combi box to receive all of the channels via the dish & the aerial. I had the Triax combi box for 5 years & it has worked perfectly since then without issues. I then also bought a Saorview approved TV during Easter because my old Saorview box had a setback after having water inside the box & the old TV. I am very disappointed that current Saorview boxes or TVs will not include a software update themselves to include Saorview Connect as it should be included for older Saorview equipment. I am not liking the idea of getting my finances burnt on getting Saorview Connect for the house if the original Saorview service stops for good as that mistake for now should be avoidable.

I will mention another point about people who live in rural Ireland who could have very poor broadband connectivity at the moment. I know that commercial companies here can roll out Fibre broadband to households that lack fibre broadband for their home; however is it a vastly expensive & time consuming process for anyone who is receiving it. The Government on the other hand have seemingly made progress on their roll out plan for broadband. They planned to have 65% of homes receiving high speed broadband by September 2017. But has it included anyone here or your friends or neighbours who live near you have received government invested high speed FTTH so you can use Saorview Connect in your house? If not when will you expect to have it in your area?

They're not going to turn off the terrestrial transmissions for a while yet, if that's what you're thinking. There is currently work being done to reconfigure the network for the sell-off of 700 MHz frequencies.

I should have said if the current Saorview equipment stops for good. If I include more detail in my questions.

Will Saorview Connect work something that is similar to Freeview Play & Freeview in the UK that will only include all of the Irish catch up services via broadband?

Will Saorview Connect be able to work in tandem with Saorview or will people have to be used to one service or the other when watching Irish channels via an aerial?
