I posted this elsewhere and did not notice this massive Golf thread sorry!...

So I am thinking of buying a 2013 Golf diesel 1.6, it has 88,000 miles on it, is this a lot of milage or is that ok? The price is €12,500. It has had one owner and has a full service history, any advice would be appreciated!

I'm not sure about the price (not to well up on used diesel Golf prices) but the mileage wouldn't necessarily put me off if everything else stacks up, if it looks like a good honest car. i.e. full service history, generally in good condition inside and out - clean and tidy paintwork, clean interior, etc? Is it an ex UK company car perhaps? If so, they tend to be well maintained, serviced on the button with main dealers, etc.

88k isn't mad high on a 4 (coming up on 5) year old diesel anyway.

The rear camera is still part of the tech pack afaik. But that pack has gone up in price a fair bit! Think its about 700 euro now. I remember they were doing it for 151 euro as part of their 151 sales gimmick.

That's it. On our 162 the tech pack was €162 and you had a choice of either leather or pan roof at no extra cost on the Highline.

The facelift highline lost a good bit of spec, it went back to 17's as opposed to 18's on the pre facelift. No rear LED's, no keyless.

Personally, I think the 162 pack was a bit of an exception in that it was the close out of the pre-facelift model so it got a lot of stuff over and above the 161 and previous packs.

I took delivery of my facelift PP last Friday and I noticed that since I ordered back in July the Tech Pack has gone up €100 and the price of the car has gone up €400. So creeping up all the time.

Jesus leather at no extra cost, that would have been nice. Then I could have got the electric adjustable driver seat without being forced to spec leather for €2,000! Madness. Quite happy with alcantara though, completely forgot about it until I got into the car for the first time :o

Vw share price slso ticking up lately... They lost a lot of value with dieselgate (vw took $30bn in provisions, or wrote off $30bn to pit it another way) and all of those tech packs and general discounting were incentives to keep people buying the brand... The share price went from 250 to sub 100 and now its back at 163 ish. So up 60% from the bottom but still almost 50% gain needed to get back wherr they started.

Now that is, largely, all in the past, over two years ago since the ecandal broke, its back to business as usual. So discounted tech packs probably out the window. Coupled with annual or semi annual increases on the list prices... Somrone has to pay for the sins of the few. Plus now they need a tonne of money to develop battery powered cars....

There will still be incentives, obviously, but now theyve drawn a line under the diesel scandal, theres no need for what were crisis managememt sales incentives and they need to grow earnings to keep the share price moving anf pay for the investment in cleaner cars...

If the cars are selling well again, just shows, a brand can ride out pretty much anything since people are fickle, and/lr, sufficiently price sensitive....

Need new Tyres for the GTD.

    Dealer recommended Matadors!!!

    Recommendations please for 18's

Preference this time round for quieter tyres. Has anyone noticed much difference when they've changed tyres from a noise point of view?

What does he deal ? :D matadors :pac:

Can't go wrong with F1 asymmetric 2's or Michelin PS3's or tyres of that ilk.

I put 2 Michelin PS4-s’s on mine last week. They seem to be generally rated among the best at the moment.
A dealer will flog you any ol ****e tbh. It’s black and it’s round. What more do you want.

The reason dealers will generally flog any old rubbish is because it's generally all their punters will pay for. There's no point quoting customers for premium brand tyres when they will loose 90% of their sales to the local tyre centre fitting ditch finders. It's a race to the bottom unfortunately, "If you can't beat them, join them" is the only approach it seems.

That said the dealership staff should have some level of awareness of the products they are dealing with though, so they may realise that someone with a GTI/ D/ R might have more of an interest in buying a premium tyre than someone buying tyres for their 1.2tsi trendline and as such shouldn't let that cost them the sale. Or at least they should ask the question "you need 2x front tyres, will I quote you for what is currently fitted to the car or have you any preference for replacements".

    Agreed.
I go to a local guy for tyres (I actually got the michelins on camskill this time around but he fitted them for me), and he said he just can't keep enough stock of the Chinese stuff. It's all 80-90% of people are prepared to pay for. Including people who are driving in very fresh and very expensive cars.

The lads like myself who ring him up and ask if he has any PS4's / Eagle F1's can be counted on one hand.

And this is why you'll find everyone driving like morons whenever it rains these days, slowing down to 25km/h for bends that you can take at normal limits in the dry and holy jaysus normal limits in the rain as well if you have half decent tyres.

Infuriating when you end up stuck behind some of them.

Had Goodyear efficient grip on a a Leon FR 184 and found them good for noise levels. Quieter than eagle f1s but there was a difference in grip. Not by much but it was noticeable.

Totally agree. A lot of tyre places do this, I'm not dealer bashing. You can buy the mid-range and even premium brands online for similar prices to what some local tyre places sell the Chinese rubbish for.

I was quoted €220 each for 2 Conti runflat tyres 2yrs ago locally, I bought the same model online for €113 each plus €20 to fit them both.

One of the lads here at work has 18" PS4's on his A3 and he says they're quite noisy.

Good feedback on the tyres. I'll get on line and have fitted locally. Recommendations of fitters who'll oblige in Limerick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,539 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Limerick Tyre Centre in Raheen (in the yard across from the Toyota dealer) will fit them for you.

How quick are GTIs to sell on the second hand market? I've a 2015 mk7 that I'd like to sell privately in the new year to make way for an RS4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

All depends on how much you price it for. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Tough to sell anything privately - and even tougher if it's a 20k++ car. Your potential market is pretty small. At that level, buyers want "peace of mind" buying from a dealer and most of them will want finance.

they start from 27k online, so I would imagine selling one in the low 20's might work. Depends on spec too - i.e. leather seats or not, DSG, Performance Pack.

As an example, this one has been up for quite some time....

Yeah it's amazing how piss poor the effort some people make with their ads. It doesn't take that much work...

    That's a very interesting example.

The owner has it on Carzone as well...

DoneDeal ad (updated 29 days ago): Price - €27,500; Mileage - 53,000 km
Carzone ad (updated 364 days ago): Price - €32,500; Mileage - 38,000 km

So he’s been trying to sell it for a year then. Either he’s not that bothered one way or the other or he’s just a crap salesman.

He's doing a fair bit of mileage in it as well anyway!

I'm only approaching 19k km in mine and it's a couple of months over 2 now.

I thought mine was low. I just ticked over 28k kms. Similar age.

Short ish commute and more often than not the wife’s car gets used for weekend / family stuff as the boot in the Golf is hopeless.

    40k km almost 2 years old :(.

Stopped in traffic today the car flashed a warning "no key detected", for all of 5 seconds. Wouldn't start when pushing in the clutch (stop-start system). The car must of went into a safe mode when the key wasn't detected. Could the car shut its self down if I was moving?
