Well wear davey, I love getting a new car and playing with the toys and finding features I wasn’t expecting, a real bonus. Head over to a golf specific forum and you’ll likely find a thread with all these quirky features highlighted.

No need. There isn't a question he could ask about it that I wouldn't have the answer for here :pac:

This is one of the better UK forums though imo: http://golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=117.0

Don't worry, I've had plenty of time to look up all sorts of information about the Golf in the 4 months I've waited :D It's still nice to find little surprises while driving like the cornering light coming on, pretty neat feature to have on the standard headlights.

It also seems that cruise control slows down/doesn't speed up to while taking some tighter bends and the infotainment has a proximity sensor so the buttons come up on screen as your hand gets close to it!

I have to say though the fan for the air is a little louder than expected. Having it set to 2 is fine but then the noise seems to ramp up on 3 and the driver door side vent doesn't blow out much even though it's open all the way. Not a big deal though!

They've thought of bloody everything on this car. I had a 500ml coke lying down in the door and it didn't slide all over the place. The grippy cupholders are great, I can't believe the glovebox has coin and card slots and a place to store SD cards!

The only downside for me is that on the i30 I kept all my parking change in a cubbyhole between the armrest and cupholders, it was also convenient to store your phone upright. I put all the change in the armrest but because it's lined it doesn't rattle around much. I just have my essential trolly coins stored next to the 12 volt :)

And of course I have to mention the suspension. I don't know what it is about VAG cars, I noticed it on my friends MK6, Scirocco and her A6. There's a firmness to the suspension but at the same time it's very comfortable and soaks bumps up very well. It's similar to going from an aluminium bicycle to a carbon one, if any of you know that feeling :P It's just so smooth no matter what the road is. I took it down the Long Mile Road, which is one of the worse roads I've driven in Dublin and it was no bother.

Sorry about the long post, just excited :D

I suggest setting the temp to something sensible (20-22) and put it in Auto mode and then forget about it. It's climate control, so it will heat up/cool down and adjust fan speed on its own without you ever needing to do anything.

Yeah I was thinking of throwing it on auto next time I'm in it. A day like today was quite stuffy so I was messing around with it quite a bit.

In Auto it doesn't show the fan speed indicator, but if you've access to VCDS or OBD11 you can tweak that, so it shows always.

You know there's a little cubby above your right knee as well,? Quite handy for change.

Ah, didn't think of that! Don't need two pairs of sunglasses in the car :D

I see the Polo GTI will be offered for sale here early next year ..

Can't see too many paying €33k for a Polo.

You could just as easily argue you couldn't see many people paying €45k for a "Golf".

    €55k :eek::pac:

I was interested in potentially seeing how one would be, but heard that figure a few weeks ago from someone in the know and that put an end to those thoughts.

Whatever about paying 50k for a Golf, they really needed to hit the high 20's with the Polo to make it seem attractive. Too many competitors in that segment these days that are in the low to mid 20's range.

If you want a good one :D

In fairness the Polo GTi was never as big a bit as the Golf but it's a nice addition to the range.

2.0 TSi 200bhp is that essentially a detuned GTI engine?

    Detuned engine from the MK6.

The reason for the 33k price tag is it's DSG only at launch which adds about 2k to the price. I've heard the manual version is coming but not for another year at least.

LED headlights as a costly option is a strange decision.

I wonder would it sell better if it was a bit more basic, like the entry level GTI in Germany. No digital dash, less techie stuff etc.

On a more Golf related note, with ACC on, when moving off from a set of lights it likes to leave a very big gap in front, then once above say 30kph it closes the gap no issues. If I touch the accelerator, even though nowhere near the car in front, it slams the brakes. ACC is set to 1 car length. It's like a very nervous learner driver taking off...

I have it set to comfort, could this be why? I feel it accelerates up to speed very similar to Normal. I know Eco is a bit slow to get up to speed though. Does the ACC profile effect starting and stopping? I hear Sport brakes very late and is quite aggressive. I just brake manually at junctions to disable it and accelerate myself and once up to speed hit resume because it was annoying me at junctions.

Outside of that it's good in heavy traffic :)

Q is it worth €12,000 more than the new Ibiza F.R 1.5 150bhp or the outgoing Ibiza cupra which is €23,000 albeit in 3dr only

Very good point, at 33k i'd be stretching a bit more and going for a Leon Cupra

Not a bad predicament. Do you have the Ibiza Cupra currently?

Nope, Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo at the moment, saving for house was the priority last time around but now that's sorted I can splash out a bit :)

Other half has the Ibiza Cupra!

Have to say I'm happy with the sound system in the Golf. I probably wouldn't fork out €800 for the Dynaudio upgrade, a have my doubts of a subwoofer in the spare wheel and putting the bass on +2 or +4 gives it a nice kick without having to have it at deafening volumes and it doesn't overpower the mids and highs. I'm no audiophile but I do like a decent sound. I've had a €100+ soundcard on the PC, 4" studio monitors and €300 studio headphones so I've had my experience with good sound. No complaints for a stock sound system :)

When it's really cranked there's very, very little vibrations in the rear view mirror and nothing at all on the wing mirrors despite having a solid thump. Very well built car!

It’s a great stock sound system. Very impressive for stock.

Dynaudio is well worth the asking price, it's the number one option I picked on my car. I haven't heard the standard system so I've no comparison.

The standard audio system in the Golf is very good as standard systems go imo. I’ve been in BMW’s for example where the stock system is absolutely pants and their $$$ Harmon Kardon setup is barely any better than a standard VW system.

Dynaudio is very good but hey, it’s 8-900 Euro. That’s not cheap or particularly good value. I bought a very good top end AVR receiver for my living room for much less than that and I’d say it’ll well outlive the car.... it’s all relative I guess.

Edit: there was a period there early this year when Dynaudio was part of the cheap “tech pack”. Now in that case it definitely was good value / no brainier.

Isn't there a promo for post 2013 cars when getting a service? Half caught the ad - seems to be something about an upgrade for the media system*

*I may have gotten that completely wrong

I think it’s actually for 2013 cars and older. And it’s some kind of “car net” type system - a remote / mobile app for the car. Not sure on details.

It's for any car 4 years of age or older. You get the VW DataPlug for half price (€25) when you buy it with any service. That said I'd say if you ask they'd probably include it with any service.

    http://www.vwconnect.com/ie/en/

I have it in the Golf and it's ok. It's a fun gadget I'd you are into cars, it's ok for €25, tells you some stats and things. It plugs into the OBD port.

Do you pay a subscription on top of the plug as well? Worth getting even if you already have CarPlay?
