I know, right? We got tons of Sonic spinoffs in the '90s, with the likes of Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Sonic Drift, Sonic 3D Blast (or Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island, but 3D Blast rolls off the tongue more easily) and Sonic R.

Speaking of Sonic 3D Blast, someone's enhancing the original Mega Drive game and fixing the game's issues. Here's the most recent video regarding this:

That someone is the original programmer of the game and worked at Traveller's Tales during the 16 and 32 bit era. You should check out his other videos on the channel, TT were one of the best for getting insane graphical effects out of the megadrive and Saturn and he explains how he managed those effects on his videos.

I've seen his stuff, and it's all very amazing and intriguing.

I mainly play SMB1 just for the pleasure of its glitches, particularly the wall jump. I'm not the biggest fan of its sequel's (not talking about the Lost Levels, which is known as SMB2 in Japan) gameplay style, a shift which reminds me of Zelda II's. SMB3 has aged extremely well like its predecessors, and I can still enjoy it from time to time. Following up, Super Mario World is likely my favourite game in the series.

Am I the only person that cannot pull of the flying mechanic in Super Mario World?
Driving me nuts, I can't master it.

I'm still only ~30% through in Majora's Mask, yet I've until 12am to beat it.

I've just installed the 1997 horror FPS Blood. I think I'll enjoy it since I've enjoyed the original Shadow Warrior, which is based on 3D Realms' Build engine, which is also used in Blood and of course Duke Nukem 3D, which I've got to play some time.

Crikey, I'm only halfway through Majora's Mask and there's only 2 hours, 24 minutes before midnight.

I used to be in the Shadow Warrior camp but I now think Blood is by far the best Build engine game.

I just got to play Blood and I'm enjoying it like I'd expect to. I decided to get Blood as it was only €1.24 on Steam. I tried to get it on GOG but it wouldn't accept the credit card for some reason. I had leftover cash in my Steam wallet so I thought, why not get it on Steam?

Unfortunately, I didn't beat Majora's Mask in time for midnight. I didn't think I would anyways since I was only 3/4 through, so I turned to Blood for now.

I just bought Blood as well. Only gave it a go for 5 minutes cos I bought a load of other stuff but it seems like great fun.

Blood is a fantastic game, haven't played it in donkey's years. Glad to hear it still holds up.

The less said about the sequel the better...

Oh boy, I know right? I never played the sequel (nor will I play it), but it's widely considered a disappointment especially compared with the 1st game.

Speaking of Duke Nukem 3D, would you recommend getting the 20th Anniversary World Tour or the Atomic Edition?

Fancied some Shadow of the Colossus this evening. Kind of wanted to see how a game of that quality looked on the new monitor too.

Haven't played it through in about 6-7 years (I haven't gone anywhere near the HD versions either), holy god, that framerate!

Actually found it completely unplayable and had to turn it off :(

I feel pity for the people who had to deal with the original game's framerate. Nowadays, that isn't a problem, thanks to the HD re-release.

Also, ain't it weird how Ico ran at ~240p (512x256) while the majority of PS2 games ran at 576i?

I played and finished SotC on the PS2, loved it, I guess you become accustomed to it.
I have the PS3 HD remake, and will more than likely pick up the upcoming version for the PS4 as well.

So did I and to be honest back then, I didn't think anything of the framerate at all. I think I've just been playing a lot of games lately that run at a smooth framerate and it's making it all that more jarring.

I think the PS2 version of Ico still looks just fine, but you do have to accommodate the age of the system now.
It's not a surprise that so many PS2 games, PS1 games even more so, that have aged significantly in the past five years.
Picking up Pandemonium 2 for the PS I had high hopes, recalling a decent game back in the day, the reality was far different.

I'd say it's more to do with the use of all that bloom post processing. Having that all over the screen really tests the GPU and dropping it to a lower resolution would help it out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,004 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

The framerate on SotC was definitely pretty terrible even at release. Still finished it but it was jarring.

Low resolution 3D isn't necessarily a nasty thing. I mean I'm playing Dusk at the moment and it lets you emulate the Quake 1 software look because, hey, it looks kind of cool in retrospect. It even lets you turn the framerate down to "Cinematic" or 24fps. I'm used to having a slightly behind the times PC so while I can tolerate a low framerate I really don't enjoy it much. Generally turn all my settings down to the lowest possible if there's any choppiness. Been playing a lot of Competitive CS:GO lately and there's a lot to be said for that buttery smoothness even on integrated graphics.

I'd really dig the Quake SW look in Dusk.

I've played Hexen on the PS and it's still just fine to see and play.
I guess it's when the system tries to be high end that it all tumbles down.
I still love the versions of Quake on the Saturn and Quake II on the N64, I understand they've been cut down compared to the PC originals but they are pretty impressive none the less.

New Hexen inspired FPS announced the other day looks pretty class. Runs on UE4 but they're using sprites and low poly models to give it chunkiness.

Might use that as an excuse as to why I don't wear tight fit clothes....

I'm playing Sonic 1: The Next Level, which is a hack of Sonic 1 set in some planet in outer space (probably Mars?), for the nth time. Gotta love the fluid animations in that hack.
