Point of Sale! Reminds me of the old joke, first prize is one Saorview Connect Box, second prize is two Connect Boxes and so on.
    That's not fair.

When the new firmware comes out you could use the second box to record two channels at the same time. :P

Just wondering how you think discussion here had any bearing on launch date ?

Possibly because a number of Boards members after reading this forum, may have contacted an RTE owned department and asked a number of questions.
This may have led to with withdrawal of the powercity advertising the receiver and a possibly delay in the launch of the receiver.

Perhaps someone in Powercity realized that it would never sell at that price point ?

Or was a launch date even announced?

I'm not aware of any formal launch date being announced so far.

Do you know if it is still going to be launched without the recording facility?

Power city wouldn't have put it up on their site with pictures/details unless they got those details from saorview/distributor and the product was ready for launch.

I wonder if the Connect STB was put on the market to early?

Had the receiver been independently tested as being Saorview or even Saorsat approved?

I believe it would have been the first Saorview branded stb on the market, without a working record function.

Was RTE/Saorview/2rn aware the receiver was going on the market at this time?

Sorry I cannot comment on that because of NDA

I have heard that box will launch, and it will be early to mid-November.

Yeah, exactly. There's so little hard information that guesswork tends to get taken up as fact.

So people are getting annoyed that the launch has been delayed, even though the launch was never announced and none of them want the product anyway, then examining reasons why a non-existent launch date wasn't met.

The fact is Powercity published the launch date on their website as the end of October, the speculation/guessing came since they pulled it from their site. Why did they?

I don't see anyone getting annoyed about the supposed delay just speculating that due to the negative reaction to box spec. here will they hold off launching it until they have at a minimum a PVR add-on option or better, an integrated HDD.

I'm glad someone saved the link as I was pretty sure the ad had said it would be launched at the end of Oct.

They obviously got that info from Saorview/Distributors.

Maybe it was Power City's fault for putting it up early on the site and this whole saga will still launch at the end of Oct.

April 1st would have been more suitable!

Bit like a guy on death row - the end date always gets pushed out!

It was announced to the trade but was not supposed to be made known publicly yet.

According to the person who posted the initial information the RRP is €199 with Powercity retailing it at €219.95

Sent an email to Powercity today - got a bog standard response saying to keep an eye on the website. To me, it seems like even though there'll be a launch, there won't be stock immediately!

Hi Tony, just wondering who announces this to the trade.

    Saorview/RTE or a supplier ?

    Thanks

I contacted them on live chat yesterday and they said launch is targeted for next week.

Does anybody know if Satellite Channels are confined to the Free Sat channels - will one be able to add extra channels (i.e. where dish has two LNB's - one on 28 degrees east and the second on 19 degrees east)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 96,399 Mod ✭✭✭✭Capt'n Midnight

    Interesting question.

Almost certainly you'll be able to add extra channels, even SKY let you do that.

Doesn't mean you can flick between them easily. Also some Freesat boxes switching to non-freesat mode can affect recording of Freesat channels until you switch back.

Also to have two satellites you'd need a Diseqc switch

I defy you to find any half decent generic FTA box for the European market that doesn't support switches.

SKY boxes won't because vendor lock in.

The original Humax Freesat box, by far the most flexible Freesat branded box, can support a Diseqc switch
But it's from a hidden menu , and you only get Now/Next on the EPG so you have to set timed recording, which is a little easier if you've setup the web interface.
And it's a wee bit funny about recordings on the second tuner if you are recording/watching Saorsat/Freesat at the same time.

So until someone confirms otherwise, I'll assume this box won't support Diseqc AND full EPG on the channels that offer it on Saorsat or Hotbird / Astra 1.

I guarantee you its a generic FTA DVB-S2 tuner. Doubtful the software would lock it.

Any idea what shops will be selling these boxes on launch? Can any outlet sell them?

14th of November is Tuesday so are we likely to see stock on sale from that date on or will there be a lag?
