Most of these awards by votes are just contests to see how uses social media best.

Eddies does not surprise me, is there any other "american takeaway" you would think would get more votes? can you even name another!

this was the shortlist, didn't know capt, americas did takeaways
    Best Takeaway American

Eddie Rocket’s, Stillorgan Shopping Centre, Lower Kilmacud Rd, Stillorgan, Dublin
Eddie Rocket’s, Omni Park Shopping Centre, Swords Rd, Whitehall, Dublin 9
Rockin’ Joe’s, 97-98 S Main St, Centre, Cork
    Rockin’ Joe’s, 115 O’Connell St, Limerick
Captain America’s, S Main St S Main St, Centre, Cork

seems to me they allowed mutliples only since there was possibly no other entrants. Same with salads
    Best Salad

Burrito Loco, Unit 2 Port Centre, Port Road, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal
Chopped, 16 Fairview, Clontarf, Dublin 3
Chopped, 109 Grafton Street, Dublin 2
Chopped, Pavilions Shopping Center, Swords, Co. Dublin
Sprout & Co, 63 Dawson St, Dublin 2

while if you look at others there are no repeats, and I bet there should have been. e.g. I bet bombay pantry got votes for different outlets, I doubt there is anything peculiar about the one that appears in 2 categories. (not that I rate B pantry anyway highly anymore). And a very even split between the junkmail pizza places.
    Best Takeaway Pizza

Firehouse Pizza, 11 College View, Ballymun, Dublin 11
Mizzoni’s Pizza, 6 Meehan House, James Fintan Lalor Ave, Portlaoise
Base Wood Fired Pizza, 92 Terenure Rd E, Terenure, Dublin 6
Four Star Pizza, 2A Station Roundabout, Gortlee, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal
Domino’s Pizza, The Square, Tallaght, Dublin 24

    Best Curry

Saba To Go, 13 Rathgar Rd, Dublin 6
Ajanta Indian Takeaway, 14 Peter St, Drogheda, Co. Louth
Bombay Pantry, 38 Philipsburgh Ave, Fairview, Dublin 3
Tadka House, 146 Rathmines Rd Lower, Dublin
Camile Thai, 143B Phibsborough Rd, Phibsborough, Dublin 7
    Best Takeaway Indian

Tadka House, 146 Rathmines Rd Lower, Dublin
Bombay Pantry, 38 Philipsburgh Ave, Fairview, Dublin 3
Ajanta Indian Takeaway, 14 Peter St, Drogheda, Co. Louth
Delhi Darbar, Main St, Celbridge, Co. Kildare
Spice Cottage, 1 O’Rourke Park, Thomastown, Sallynoggin, Co. Dublin

    Best Takeaway Thai

Camile Thai, 143B Phibsborough Rd, Phibsborough, Dublin 7
Lana Asian Street Food, Dublin Road, Castletroy, Limerick
Saba To Go, 13 Rathgar Rd, Dublin 6
Kanum Thai, 77 Mespil Rd, Dublin 4
Pa Pa Thai, Canada St, Waterford

I made Hestons mash last night, wouldn't bother again however I would do the infused milk with the potato skins again.

The Takeaway Awards have been announced!

    http://m.independent.ie/life/food-drink/this-restaurant-has-been-voted-the-best-takeaway-in-ireland-and-its-cheap-36235895.html

Might have to make a trip to Swords sometime......:)

That's one of the few takeaways in Swords that I haven't had food from - but I will now. If you're coming to Swords try Sagarmatha Kitchen, it's Nepalese and the food is off-the-scale good :)

In fairness, I find Camile awful, I had it before and was very disappointed.
And Bombay pantry is overpriced and overrated imo, it's a bit of a hipster dig.
Also Eddie Rockets on the list? Come on....

But boojum and Firehouse are really nice.

The only time I ordered from Camile I had to phone them up and yell at them to get my complete order. The 'website was wrong', apparently. I had to threaten to go to the shop and make a scene in order for them to agree to deliver the rest of my order. I have to say that it soured me on the chain completely and I couldn't bring myself to go there again.

Next time I have to drop my daughter off to Wright’s I’ll have a look about. Won’t be until next year though as we’ve barred her for the rest of this year.
    Teenagers!

There is actually a really quick curry kinda thing that I've seen on pioneer woman, tweaked it and when it has to be really fast, it's nice.

    http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/chickpea-curry/

When you season it right, that's a nice very basic and not too complex one where you can put a lot of other things in. And every illiterate can cook that.

Had this tonight. Added some sweet potato. Some for lunch tomorrow. I'll make it again. Thank you

The lentils? Had it for lunch so I had a mini wrap for mopping it up, herself toasted a pitta and used that!

Worth noting, the recipe makes enough for 4 or 5 servings easily

Glad ye liked it! It's one of my winter comfort favourites.

The recipe does make plenty. I'll be making it for diner myself tonight and the extra will be going in the freezer.

So, this is my old kitchen. Locked away in the back of the house, damp, no heating...

    IMG_2992.jpg

And this is my new kitchen, made out of the half of the living room that was rarely used

    IMG_3065.jpg

    IMG_3066.jpg

And the very first thing I ever cooked in it, or on a gas hob (I need to get the flame adjusted, lowest of the low has stuff boiling heavily rather than simmering)

    IMG_3063.jpg

Absolutely delighted with it. It's gorgeous :D The tiling just needs to be done now. The old kitchen is now a scullery for storing stuff like baking pans that don't get used much and bicycles that I'm sick of in the living room, along with the hoover, ironing board, washing machine etc.

Saw frozen, roast half chickens in Lidl.
Cooking instructions say to heat in oven for 40 minutes.
    What's the point of that?
You could roast a half a chicken from fresh in that time.

I'm heading out for a chinese tonight. I'm going to forgoe the usual curry sauce for something different. What do ye recommend? Nothing too spicy but not boring either. Like schezuan is too spicy, plain chop suey is too boring. (It'll be had with veg or tofu so anything like salt and chilli chicken is out)

Kung po chicken. Some kung pos are quite hot though. I like the fact you get cashews with them, chicken with cashew nuts is too bland for me. In my nearest takeaway you actual get more cashews in the kung po.

I thought kung po sauce is the same as szechuan sauce! Thnk you, I'll keep it in mind!

I'm not a massive fan of cashews myself, flavour is fine but they have a weird texture, like they're slightly gone off, and no longer crunchy, like a nut is supposed to be. :pac:

Some can be similar enough, IME the kung po is not as hot, though 1 place I go to can sometimes give very hot kung po.

The cashews can depend on the place, I imagine some cook beforehand and have them stewing away in sauce so have that texture.

If not a fan of cashews I would go for something else. Maybe post up the menu of the place you are going to, as you said curry I am guessing its a takeaway, so might be on just-eat.ie

One which is not too bland or hot I get is chicken with ginger & spring onions

No menu online, but they describe themselves as cantonese cusine. Apparently they have a small Thai selection too. I'm dying to go!

    Beef & black bean sauce?

Anyone know where I can get tempeh in Dublin?

I've burned the feck out of my mouth on sweet lotus bao, and now I want to give making my own a try. Was thinking char siu tempeh for the filling.

    Beef & black bean sauce?

I went for tofu in green pepper and black bean sauce. It was really good! Glad I struck out from the usual gloopy and disappointing curry sauce.

Anyone know if Aldi’s cornflour is gluten-free? Bought a packet this week but have chucked the packaging.

I thought all cornflour was gluten free. I've just checked my press. I've no Aldi cornflour. Just Tesco cornflour.

Wiki replied not necessarily when I asked if cornflower is gluten-free - they sometimes add flour to it!!!

Want to thicken a sauce but one of the kids here tonight is a real coeliac!!!!

It is usually a cross contamination issue when they have to be certified gluten free. There could be other grains in the same factory, and there could be other stray grains growing in the same field.

I think most types of oats should also be naturally gluten free but can suffer cross contamination. Also oat, wheat & barley grains are very similar looking, not sure if the plants look as similar too, but would be harder to spot if other grains were mixed in.

I think the coeliac society of ireland has an up to date list of products which are gluten free, including own brands.

James Whelan Butchers have opened in the Pavillions in Swords. I might be less inclined to find excuses not to go shopping there in the future.
