Ate in West Cork Burger Company on Sunday night - burger was amazing!! I think it might be the best one I've had out of all the burger places in Cork - bunsen and this place are the tastiest I think, used to think Coqbull was the best but last few times I was in there, it wasn't as good.

    Miyazaki :)

Are Miyazaki closing the takeaway when they open the restaurant or are they keeping both going?

The Blue Haven of Kinsale are moving into Vikki's deli in Sunday's Well next week. Apparently will be serving evening meals too. Could be nice.

    Ah flip that’s a pity

Gutted. Always found it consistently good.

Went there midweek and tried 4 tapas dishes with the lady.

Mushroom bruscetta, Tolouse Sausage, Polenta croquettes and Aubergine....something. Followed that up with a coffee & a dessert each for €40 bill. So, a bit pricey I suppose for tapas but I enjoyed it and I was glad to see that there were plenty of more substantial items on the menu including steak and a Duck salad that I really want to try. The Mushroom was the best, Aubergine 2nd, polenta & sausage 3rd & 4th respectively - really enjoyed the mushroom.

Deserts were substantial too - I had the white chocolate cheesecake which was lovely and not too heavy - the chocolate truffle cake was heavy enough but wasn't too rich - was lovely with a coffee.

Staff were friendly and it was nice and chilled out there so I'll definitely go back - they started brunch this weekend so will try that at some point.

Went to the Montenotte hotel on Sunday for brunch and really regretted not taking the buffet option. Myself and my partner ordered from the menu and both orders were fúcked up. I waited to eat my pancakes until my partners dish was being fixed and then discovered they had nothing with/on them - was expecting bacon underneath (as it was to come with bacon & syrup). At that point I'd been waiting long enough that I just worked away and ate them, which I know I'll probably be lambasted for but I was hungry. Poached eggs were hard and overcooked, but really it was the service that let the place down. It wasn't overly busy, there's a buffet - so service should be better than what we got. I was going to give feedback to the manager when I paid up - I wasn't asked if everything was okay so left it off, took in the nice view for a few minutes and headed away. Simple solution for myself is simply not to return as I didn't enjoy the experience.

That's a pity about the Montenotte, such a lovely hotel and they've done so much to it, I just want it to do well, you know! We had dinner there back in June and it was lovely now but like that the service was very scattered alright -it took ages for them to bring our drink order from the bar which was only a few steps away. They were very friendly in there though. Was thinking recently of going there for brunch but not sure now - you say they have a buffet breakfast there? Is that the one for residents so but non-residents can have it too?

DAFUQ is happening there. Always seems busy. Still really like their teriyaki soba noodles with beef. And their pork belly buns are great. Will miss it. I love how they say you can always go to Dublin.

    Hi all,

I am looking to pick a restaurant for a Sunday night in Cork next month and would love some suggestions as we are not overly familiar with the area. Myself and my girlfriend will be in Cork to celebrate her birthday and will be staying in the city on the Sunday night before moving on to Castlemartyr for a few nights.

I have picked up a lot of restaurant names from this thread and from tripadvisor but I was curious to ask if there was one restaurant you would say we must try out then where would it be?

At the minute I'm considering CoqBull and Elbow Lane based on good reviews and central locations but they might be a bit too casual or pub-like? (hard to tell) We also like Italian, tapas, Thai, steakhouses... but we're not really fish eaters.

I really appreciate any help you guys can give. Oh and if there's some cool bars where she might be able to get a cocktail or a good G&T then let me know too.

Coqbull would definitely be more casual dining, its very loud and fast paced and not generally somewhere you'd go for a quiet, romantic meal.

Elbow lane would be a good shout but would be quite busy so you might be waiting quite awhile on a table.

I love Il Padrinos for a date night, they do lovely Italian food.

Cask on MacCurtain St or Barbarossa on Oliver Plunkett St would be my picks for cocktails :)

Yes, you can pay €15 for buffet breakfast as a non-resident which did seem nice, they had a good spread on.

That's the thing - the staff seemed nice, just not very competent which is what you want - the hotel itself is very nice, the view is great too but yeah, service is key and we were just unlucky that our waiter made a balls of the order....when it's two people and you have two mixups then it's pretty bad tbqh!

If you were to try only one restaurant I'd say Elbow or Market Lane for sure. Elbow is a bit less formal and mostly a steak place, but you'll probably have to wait for a table. They will take your number and call you when it's up though and the street has plenty of pubs to try while you wait! The places are next to each other and have their menu out front so you can go, have a look and decide what appeals.

For Italian I'd recommend just across the road from the above two for lunch; Italee. Their menu is small but the pasta dishes are amazing.

For a cocktail or G&T I'd say Cornstore, try their balsamicotini if you'd like something different!

Agree with above re Montenotte. Good food but terrible service. We went there a couple of weeks ago for a family Sunday lunch for a birthday. While the staff were quite pleasant they really needed to improve. As with above the drinks took ages to come. We could see them sitting on the bar for ages but had to ask the waiter to bring them over. We asked for bread which didn't arrive until after the starters. Those who ordered soup got no spoons and we were unable to flag anyone down for ages so resorted to taking cutlery from a nearby empty table. As I say the food when we got it was very good, particularly the fish dishes but really let down by service. They need to sort it out. I wouldn't be going back until I hear things have improved. Pity because it's a lovely setting.

For anyone working around UCC or living near the Lough/College Road/Bandon Road area, a new italian cafe opened only last week on Highfield Avenue called Sicilian Delights and I went there for lunch today - it's so nice! I had a chicken panini with scamorza cheese, lettuce, tomato and basil mayo. It was 5e which I thought was good value. Staff very friendly and they had some lovely looking fruit tarts and cakes. I bought a pain au raisin for takeaway and the girl heated it up for me - just had it now, divine! I get very excited when there is a new place to try around UCC, cos you get sick of the same old places all the time.

I'd say this will do well with students and staff coming in for takeaway coffees and pastries.

The seating is only high stools with tables attached to the walls, as the place is not very big, but they are adequate as I'd say they'd have a lot of takeaway orders.

on a falafel buzz since I have come back from my travels so been tasting a few around town - was in Umi today and sad to report that they were so bad - over cooked and cold!!! Was hard work to eat them - I really wanted to like them as the staff were great and they gave me hummous on the side for free,,, +1 had a wrap with halloumi though which he enjoyed.. but their falafels are not a patch on East Rocket Man - was there last week and they were divine - light, warm, tasty - lots of herbs, fresh and warm.. and the dish as a whole was yummy.. so Rocket Man wins over Umi on the falafel front!

I was also in the Spitjack and realised at one point the music had been turned up really loud. My dining companion and I both stopped talking and commented on it. We were approaching the end of the meal anyway, so didn't complain, but if it had happened as we just sat I would have said something.

The other times I've been there it certainly wasn't noticeable.

The one other odd thing though, was that even though our eventual table was available, they wouldn't seat me until my co-diner arrived! I stood awkwardly in the entrance foyer for 4-5 mins while I waited.

Can't say I noticed it the two times I've been in there, must depend on who's working that day :pac:

I was there for brunch about a month ago. Arrived about 5 minutes after the rest of the group and when I got to the table my friends told me the hostess (manager?) told them when she seated them “for future reference we usually don’t seat you until the whole group arrive”.

Also when I arrived the hostess rushed me up the stairs...even though I was only 5 minutes after the others! Didn’t like her attitude at all. Bizarre policy. I’ve worked in many restaurants and never heard of anything like this before. Kinda turned me off the place tbh!

That's really interesting! I thought maybe she had been holding a table to see if someone else was coming back, but she turned two other couples away, so she had (in her head) already assigned that free table to me but wouldn't seat me! I found it odd, as I would have sat down and ordered a coffee immediately while I waited.

Next time I'll ask for a table for one as I'll be seated at a table for 2 anyway :pac:

Why clog up the entryway and make people uncomfortable. Also the longer people sit, the more they order. I have often arrived before a group and when I am seated I almost always order a drink or olives/nuts.

Any time I have been in there in the evening it has been straight to the table anyway, so maybe it’s the day crew who have this notion.

Do people in Cork do this thing though....

Only thing I could think of is something that used to happen when I was working waiting tables as a student. Sometimes people would book a big group just for the extra space at a table.

Ate in the Oyster Tavern there a few days ago. The place is beautiful inside, but the food was only average. Menu is boring enough, burger, fish and chips, steak and a salad on mains. Starters had chowder and scampi, a salad.

Anyway, i had the chowder and fish and chips. Not enough fish in the chowder for my taste, huge volume of cream, chips were kinda pale and floppy. Batter on fish was thick. So, yeah, alright I guess. Nothing poisonous about it, but nothing to write home about either.

    Staff were attentive and friendly.
