Significant majority of Conway's rugby for Munster has been at 15 in the past two seasons. Leinster was the only game he started on the wing this season, for example.

Was he not FB in the JRWC?

Craig Gilroy and TOH were at 15 ahead of him in 2011

Unless your name is Jonathan Sexton and you have exemptions in your contract to attend all training camps (even outside international windows), you don't get picked by Ireland unless you are playing in Ireland.

    FYP ;)

That may be, but I just don't see him playing 15 for Ireland in a serious game. Although now that Zebo is gone, which still has me rattled, maybe he'll get his chance.

You're only going to get those in your contract if you know you're still going to be picked tbf.

Did he play there against England in the last 6 Nations? I think he came on in that game but can't remember what position.

EDIT: Payne was FB, and Conway came on for Earls at HT, so must've been on the wing.

I'm not surprised to see Adam Byrne in the squad. It must be a reward for the good form he's shown over the last 12 months. His defensive problems sometimes overshadow how good he is going forward. He probably won't play a part in any of the games, but you know that Schmidt will drill into him what he needs to do to improve his defending.

Ah he could well come on at fullback in any game if he's at 23. And that's exactly what makes him an excellent option for the 23 jersey. But starting him is a very different story.

Against South Africa, for example, I'd imagine they'll be very keen to have Kearney at 15 and Conway in that 23 jersey for when he inevitably gets injured. But I'm not as sure that Conway would start at 15 if Kearney doesn't make it.

Interesting race for the 14 jersey going on as well. Stockdale, Sweetnam, Byrne, D Kearney and Conway all in the running.

I'd imagine he may get a go in the Fiji game.

Zebo not making it is a big deal. It significantly increases the penalty for leaving, because you're not only losing your international career when you're abroad, you're also losing the time before you leave. It means 2 years away costs you 3 years of international rugby. I wonder if this will make people reconsider leaving after the world cup.

If you are outside the system or agree a contract outside the system, then you can't play for Ireland. That's how it has to be.

For what it is worth, I would consider allowing Zebo to play the World Cup. We get him for a few weeks in the run up, so it's not like he's missing out on prep. He has the time to reintegrate and to share some foreign knowledge.

yup, if the provinces start leaking players and become noncompetitive, it will damage irish rugby.

If you agree to leave the Irish system then that is it for Irish selection.

Nope, If you agree to leave the Irish system then that is it for Irish selection. Choices have benefits but also consequences.

It's just what I would do.

Argentina will roll back on their foreign player policy for the WC. Australia sort of did the same last time. The international exile helps us build depth, Zebo will have something to offer when the WC comes around.

Racing are going to be very happy indeed that he can be fully available to them.

This sends a clear message to anyone currently in contract negotiations.

I agree that it's harsh but I see the long term logic in Zebo not making the squad.

I’m sure it’s been mentioned but rob /Dave Kearney in neither in any form ,Zebo now far better player and in form just turned out ,not good enough best players should be picked regardless .

I don't think he limited it to that. At least I didn't read it that way. Looked to me like a minimum standard.

That's quite so...we got to a league final and lost a ... all the Irish sides are second tier at the moment, and that's undeniable

Enough examples in the past show that the two aren't mutually exclusive, however Schmidt is entering the busiest 24 months of this cycle, the IRFU policy (which EOS claims doesnt exist) clearly exists so why would Schmidt be working with anyone at this point that he doesn't envision on the plane to Tokyo? Zebo out is the right call, if it were the 6N around the corner rather than the Autumn series it might have been a different call, but it isnt.

I agree about Scannell, he deserves to be in over Farrell at the very least. Its all good though, very competitive and an attritional 24 months ahead.

POM and Stander are out of contract at the end of this season. This does send a warning shot eh?
