Tuam couldn't possibly cope with the crowd.
It'll be in around 12k, maybe more given local rivalry and time we owe them a beating.

Whats the capacity there now? Mind you there used be huge crowds there for games in the 90's

Salthill is such a colossal white elephant.
A really great stadium itself but so few games there for so many reasons.

And if Ireland get the 2023 RWC it will get even whiter and more elephanty.

What exactly is 'great' about it?

6700 apparently. But I'd say if 7000 turn up for tomorrow's county final, they won't be turning anybody away!

The 1999 match between Galway and Mayo was the most packed ground I've ever been in - wasn't much space that day.

Tuam have nobody to blame but themselves.
They had plenty of chances to have there pitch upgraded rather than Salthill but couldn`t get their act together.

As a stadium it's very good.

Nice new stand, no poles, good terracing the rest of the way round, not a hodge podge like you see in some places.

    But the location sucks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,476 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

Salthill is a joke of a location. They need to get the hell out of salthill. The breeze coming onto the pitch is brutal. You would be down from CP faster than getting out of Salthill when we play them there.

They should sell Salthill and move to better location but the connolly's won't let that happen

Thing is the ground has to accommodate both the hurlers and footballers so you can't drag the hurlers to football territory in Tuam and vice versa. And the GAA wanted a stadium in Galway city. What they should have done is sold Pearse for housing for an absolute fortune given it's in quite a well to do area. And built a completely new stadium on the east side of Galway city near the motorways.

Enda Varley notching 3 points for st vincents yesterday and James Burke putting in a stellar shift wing back for ballymun.

Varley arguably playing some of his best football ever

Castlebar Mitchels 1-11 Garrymore 1-11 is a result in the 1st SFC semi final. Ballintubber v Claremorris next.

A right mauling going by the HT score (3-10 to 0-2). Tubber must have emptied the bench in the 2nd half.

Castlebar Mitchels 1-11 Garrymore 1-11 is a result in the 1st SFC semi final. Ballintubber v Claremorris next.

Mitchels will be kicking themselves they didn't see this game out.

Numerous poor wides in the first half, they appeared to have pushed on after the goal immediately post the restart.Garrymore showed great fighting spirit to claw back a six point deficit.

Shane Nally mixed the good and the bad but kicked two absolute corkers.Mitchels had ample chances to close out the contest. The referee John Galvey gave Garrymore ample opportunities to get the equaliser.Super free by Jimmy Killeen at the death to tie it up.

I'd expect the Mitchels to win the replay on Wednesday.

The second game was over as a contest after the first twenty minutes.Real shame for Claremorris. At times a brilliant performance in the first half by Ballintubber, they most definitely took their foot off the pedal in the second half.

I'd favour them to win the county title at this moment in time.

For some in Tuam it seems somehow it did.
Most in the county looked on it making as much sense as intentionally shooting yourself in the foot

Ballintubber do look impressive. Claremorris very naive going man for man at the back against some of the best forwards in the game. Castlebar or garrymore will play a sweeper or two in the final. Ballintubber have too many smart playmakers to leave space in front of their full forward line.
Replay on Wednesday will be interesting. Castlebar the stronger for long periods of the game but Garrymore held their shape and at times rode their luck at the back. Garrymore did finish with a lot of momentum and if there was another minute or two could have won it. Kirby and Douglas well marshalled by Garrymore, can they be as quiet in the replay? Nally's two points were exceptional as was the last free kick by Killeen.

Best of luck to Cora in her new move to Oz. Will she ever play for Mayo ladies again who knows, but she owes us nothing.

Mitchels 2-8 Garrymore 0-8 at half time.Much improved performance from the Mitchels, raced out of the blocks.

Quality contest thus far considering the conditions.

    Full Time

    Mitchels 2-14 Garrymore 0-12

Mitchels were very comfortable in the second half,Garrymore never got closer than five points.

Castlebar Mitchels v Ballintubber on Sunday in the county final.

It should be a cracker, might be televised on TG4.

Anyone know much about the Ballyhaunis v Tooreen in the hurling this weekend?

Ballyhaunis almost won the Connacht intermediate last year.

Super article here imo by Ciaran Murphy https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/gaelic-games/ciar%C3%A1n-murphy-mayo-club-championship-reduced-to-farce-1.3261096 and something I feel strongly on also

I certainly agree on the stature of the Provincial champs. I was lucky enough to be involved with a club who won a county title a couple of years ago.

Winning the county was overwhelmingly the be all and end all – to be honest we pretty much stopped training after it and unsurprisingly lost in Connacht. There was a man and his dog at the Connacht semi and it was like a training session, in terms of intensity and effort from both sides, who were working off the drink more than anything!

Fair enough, Mayo had an outlier season in terms of number of matches but planning everything around the Provincial Championships (which Corofin will win anyway) is indeed “farcical” imo.

On another note though they really need to bring in a tie-break system for club Championship matches at this stage of the season. Imagine telling your boss in Dublin on Monday (in an MNC for example) you have to take a half day on Wednesday to play a GAA match!

Not only that but pitches are under pressure

    Oh absolutely

And if it's level after that, surely a period can be played where the first team to go ahead by 2 clear points or something, or else whoever is leading after 5 mins or something like that

Replays at this time of the season are complete disasters

Have to agree with the headline. Was at the match last night and the effort the players put in was a credit to both teams. Four days rest before a final is crazy. Mitchels were stronger last night but think ballintubber will win Sunday. Was speaking to a Mitchels sub after the game and he claimed that the county board are making their second team play an important league match the morning of the county final! Obviously most of their senior subs make up their second team? Surely this isn't true. No wonder clubs have little time for the county board. Im sure these clubs have been training since Feb and now have to play two games on the one day in October.

One hundred percent agree,it was top quality contest.

Ridiculous that they didn't simply play extra time on Sunday. These lads have day jobs or are studying.

Those soft underfoot conditions last night must have been very energy sapping for the Mitchels lads.Shane Nally was one of many players who appeared to be out on his feet.Three testing games in seven days and a quarter final the week previous. Crazy stuff.

I'd fancy Ballintubber but not overly so.
