I have a feeling this receiver is being released to soon. Possibly somebody in RTE/2RN has thrown a teddy out of the cot, the fact that its now withdrawn from the powercity site.

I believe its the first Saorview approved set top box released without a record facility. (Waiting for a future upgrade for record function is a step backwards)

Has the satellite tuner been independently tested for compliance against the SAORSAT
    minimum receiver requirements?

I understand Saorview are under pressure to introduce the new connect combo, but I believe bringing out a new receiver in a hurry like this is bad practice and a mistake.

There's a Revez combo box in Power City for €69.95. It may not be the best box in the world, but it supports recording today. This new Saorview Connect box will be sitting along side it - it'll be a tough sell at €220.

I pity the poor sales rep trying to flog them and keep a straight face at the same time. I know I'd be embarrassed to say that's the official offering at almost 4 times it's competitors prices.

Since I heard Freesat was teaming up to make the software for the connect box I would have thought freesat would of been on the box somewhere, very disappointing. Looks like I'll just go with a Humax for Freesat and then Connect for Saorview. Unrelated question but does anyone know if the remote record facility on the freesat app would work in this country on a freesat + box?

I couldn't get it to work. It's as if the requests were ignored. Not sure why as the app is available on the Irish Google Play store.

That's a shame, I see its not available on the Irish apple store though

There will be a default listing and ordering provided, and a UI available for manual sorting if the user wishes.

    Hi Keri,

    who compiles and maintains the default Satellite listing and how will it handle;

    1) new channel launches,
    2) channel retunes (where a channel switches frequency)
    3) multiple/regional variants of the same channel

I didn't see them yet but apologies if these questions were already asked.

    Thanks
    Dave

I am going to hazard a guess that this is done through one of the Freesat bouquets, possibly an NI one.

    Just a guess.

Don't think this will be launching for a while yet.

It was meant to be end of October, right? The Power City product page has not returned either.

Yes but was told by Saorview it is still in production and there is no launch date.

Possibly pulled until the hard drive recording is ready?

if it was pulled for this reason it they must have been reading all the feedback on boards.ie:)

I was thinking a dual tuner TV with pvr capability would be a better alternative to this. I was in Currys on Saturday looking at the back of the display TVs (that's how I get my kicks) but I didn't see any, one ones with a single TV tuner and either a single or dual satellite tuner.

I currently have a Panasonic TX-L42E30B with a PVR capability but the tuner locks when recording and the channel being recorded needs to be selected if recording in the future (ie if I turn off the TV with rte1 selected and plan on recording something later on, on rte2 then it fails).

So I think the best thing for me would be to upgrade to a smart TV with a dual TV tuner and a dual satellite tuner that has an Android os. Then everything could be controlled from one remote.

Anyone know of a TV with this spec?

Most of the high end Samsung Smart Tvs come with multiple tuners and use Freesat too.

However switching between Saorview and Freesat can be painful (5+ button presses)

Maybe a silly question as I might be getting a bit confused but does a dual saorview tuner need a dual aerial connection in the same way a dual satellite connection does or is one enough?

As mentioned there are several TV with multiple tuners but switching between them can be a pain. A better and cheaper option would be to get a combo box. It is far easier/cheaper to update/upgrade a box than the whole TV. Boxes also tend to be far more versatile. In my experience TV software is very limited and usually obsolete before it leaves the shop.

No, it can be looped internally.

The Walker and Nordmende range of TVs have both the Irish and UK channels on the same screen, The satcodx option to upload/download channels onto these TV's is great.

I've a 5 year old Samsung with dual satellite inputs and a terrestrial input. It has the full Freesat EPG, and a separate EPG for Saorview (no series link though). I've a hard drive in the back and can record and watch any other channel.

Some brands allow you to mix and match channels

download the manual / ask in shop before buying

Now in double rather that triple digits - only 98 days left for Saorview Connect to become a reality in 2017.

Only 73 days left for Saorview Connect to be available in 2017 ...and 178 days since Saorview made any News announcements (on 26th April -a red button announcement about Rugby on TG4...?):o:o:o

In fairness it was due to launch at the end of Oct but discussion here may have postponed that, let's see what happens.

Just wondering how you think discussion here had any bearing on launch date ?

Because if the people involved in the design and construction of the Saorview Connect box, read these forums to see what people who have a genuine interest in the box think of it, they will now know that in its current design, they won't be able to give them away for free, never mind charge 200 quid for it.

Powercity has removed the product from their website and Keri Billen hasn't returned to answer questions.

Does the NDA prevent you from confirming if the launch is still happening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,368 ✭✭✭✭Tony

I think I can say without breaching the NDA that the marketing department has been asking retailers about "point of sale" material so as far as I know it is going ahead.

Point of sale? What on earth are they going to sell this on? What's the USP, what is the solution and do potential punters even know what the exact problem/question is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭Tigerandahalf

It is difficult to know what is happening at this stage.
We saw images on here of promotional shop displays (excluding the hard drive recording option) so you would presume they were close to launch.

Why the item link was removed from the Power city site we can only guess.

Other than the Power city site I don't think we have seen any mention of a launch date.

Point of Sale! Reminds me of the old joke, first prize is one Saorview Connect Box, second prize is two Connect Boxes and so on.
