I killed (may be a slight exaggeration) one of my alloys off a kerb in the grey rain puddley shít that was yesterday morning. Off for a refurb shortly then I guess!

    Balls.

I done the same myself recently. Could you recommend somewhere to get it repaired?

I've read/heard great things about "Rim Solutions" in Dublin for diamond-cut refurbs. Wheel Wizards is another one that gets recommended frequently.

Absolutely. Weird part was it was a side bounce type of impact as I was turning left with my view restricted to the right so was paying more attention to that and the rear passenger side wheel clipped the kerb. No scratching/grinding sound. It literally made a sound like a spring popping in/out of its housing. A proper low 'ping' sound, so I thought something else might have snapped initially, but everything felt fine in the drive right after, so I knew when I was parking up and got out what would greet me. :(

Edit: If it's diamond cut - Rim Solutions. If it's not, then I'd go to Wheel Wizards.

Is it bad? The outer edge or much more obvious? Those wheels aren't too forgiving to bad kerb marks, they stand out a mile...

It's not the worst to be honest, mostly just the edge and luckily most of it on one of the majority black section, so only the very edge. It is about 12-14cm in length though, so you know to me it looks like half the wheel is hanging off and destroyed. :P

In fairness I'd be even more upset about it only I'll be putting new alloys on it within a week anyway, so I'll be able to ship it off to be fixed without having to worry about needing it in the near term.

That's handy, as the biggest ballache with a refurb is having to send off the wheel to them if the place isn't local / convenient.

Do you mind me asking what alloys you're planning to put on? Thanks.

Something similar happened my mrs a few weeks ago driving my car and nearly took out a tyre as well. Driving on a narrow road and a jeep forced us into the ditch where a nasty rock was sticking out. How I held my cool that day i'll never know. I don't think i'll bother getting one wheel done, i'd rather get them all done properly and two others have very minor marks on them as well.

Something 19" and also German made. ;) Should be fitting early next week as the tyres have arrived in, finally. Will post some pics then, a few jobs to be done on her first.

Hmm, nice. I'd be interested to see the pictures when you're sorted.
I've a new set of 17" Ronal rims and new Conti AW tyres set to go onto my GTi for winter whenever it arrives. I'm looking at the moment at replacement summer wheels for the standard Parkers.

Just saw that Black Rubin and Tornado Red are now a choice for solid colours on the standard Golf. Not a fan of red, but saw one or two recently and I have to say it doesn't look half bad. I'd definitely consider it for the next car :)

    Lads,

Ive been in contact with Mark from safe and sound in the uk. They fit the autowatch ghost immobiliser.
    https://www.sasmobile.co.uk/view-product/Autowatch-Ghost-Immobiliser

He is willing to travel and install the unit in Ireland but we must have a minimum of 10 people.

Cost would be between 330-340 sterling fitted, not bad for us with a strong Euro.
So is anyone interested? If so please add your name below and we will go from there.

    1. Neilw

Seems a clever system Neil. So to disarm it you’d use existing buttons on the dash? Climate control, radio, steering wheel buttons? That’s pretty neat. I read that the newer versions can be disarmed via BT on your phone too?

If you changed cars can it be easily swapped over? Probably a specialised job that only they could do?

Yes that's exactly how it works Joe, your steering wheel controls are setup as a pin or as you said bluetooth on your phone.

I don't know whether it can be removed and installed on another car.

Has anybody here imported one of these cars from the UK? I know there's a UK buying thread but this is the only car I'm interested in really so would be nice to hear of anybody's experience of bringing one in. I've been keeping an eye on the secondhand market here and it's very slow, too many low spec cars, and I think the main dealers still have them overpriced. Also every second one is white.

For something like this, how much off the asking price do you think a dealer would let it go for with a straight cash sale from overseas? Having to commit to a sale before actually driving the car, I'd want to buy from a main dealer. I know the Das Weltauto warranty wouldn't be honoured in Ireland, but I'd have more confidence that they are selling the car without any known issues.

You say too many low spec’d cars here but that example is lower spec’d than most. Pretoria’s aside that’s a base spec car.

You’ll find no (or pretty much none) older than 151 in Ireland. They only started selling in numbers here from then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,367 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Low spec GTIs, not that pushed on spec if I'm going for an R. I actually don't like the pretorias either so wouldn't be going for that particular car, was just the first one from a dealer that came back in my search. Mileage a bit high for my liking too.

Most Irish GTI’s from 151 have a pretty decent spec. Anything older is hit and miss. Standard spec was relatively poor before 151 so you’re looking for the odd car that the original owner sunk €5k+ of options into. Not many of those.

I can't stand those tartan seats so that rules the majority of the models out for me, I'd want the performance pack too and there are only a couple of colours I'd really want. The standard spec R is fine with me, and doesn't seem to be too far off the price of a well specced GTI. The UK is a much bigger market so there'll be something for someone as picky as me, hence why I'm now looking there. I'm just curious as how to how much you can expect to haggle over the phone.

You'll likely haggle nothing on the phone in the U.K. And very little in person unless it's stupidly priced or has hung around for a long while. UK secondhand cars, in the main, are priced £500-£1,000 of expected selling price. For supermarkets such as CarGiant it's generally the stated price plus an admin fee. That's the dominant not exclusive position.

It's not like here where dealers price their cars on the high side to allow for haggling. With UK dealers you will be lucky to get a few hundred off at best and that can be hard work. They tend to price their cars more realistically to what they want to get for them.

It’d be worth following this dealer in Scotland on Facebook - https://m.facebook.com/gtiworld/

He must be one of the biggest VW dealers in the U.K. and he’s always announcing pretty attractive looking deals on that FB page.
