Less sensitive tuner in the Sony. The aerial signal coming into that room must be borderline.

Is there a manual tune option where you can pick the channel. There should be signalbars then underneath showing the signal quality.

Ah yeah that makes sense alright, thanks. Yep I'll check out manual tune and see what the craic is. Cheers mate!

Also make sure the tv is set to digital and not analogue when tuning, there's a Digital/Analogue button on the remote to do this.

Another thing, how the hell did Freesat get involved in this piece of junk ?

They answered a request to tender and won it. Of course, they are not bringing 'Freesat' to the party because that is a UK only product. Hmm - RTE/SaorsatSaorview must not have read the t&c properly.

EKT have their own UI. Its called SolidTV. The middleware according to the pics seems to be something else, probably the Freetime element from the UK.

As mentioned earlier in the thread it's Metaphor, the commercialized and marketed version of Freesat's Freetime HBBtv solution for international users and licensed to Tivùsat in Italy also, a member of the FreeTV Alliance.
None of the back end software needs to be new. It should all be off the shelf with a small amount of software localisation.

The software isn't new, as I posted above, the software is Freesat's Metaphor localised for Saorview. The problem is the hardware.

Freesat is providing the software, management, website and app. The question is how much involvement did they have in the selection of the hardware, from that initial look we've had of that box I can't see how a professional organisation like Freesat had any significant input in the hardware selection and development.

Look at their present range of approved receivers and their requirements for the next generation of Freesat boxes - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=104564030#post104564030

I just can't see a market for this glorified zapper box, especially at that price. Being rushed to market maybe?

Nothing rushed about it. That's why it shocks me so much. The software will be fine. I can even live without the satellite epg. But recording is a must. Whoever okayed this needs a demotion at the very least.

Cheers for that. I could not find the original post. But just to add, There is no stock in Ireland. The only boxes that are in Ireland are the ones on trial. I would also question the 199 price.

Is this like the BBC iPlayer will I be able to run in on an Nvidia shield tv?
Or is it on a certain box that only pics it up.

The collective belief/hope here that there would be a 7-day Freesat EPG was always very optimistic. It's no surprise that it's not there.

However, it's an incredible omission that the box isn't capable of recording to an external HDD. That is not complicated tech.

It is incredible that provision for an internal HDD was not included in the box design.

I considered it more likely than not because of Freesat's involvement and the fact that any useful STB requires series linking and recording as well as a full 7 day EPG.

Yeah, not even that much but it should have a space for an internal HDD if the customer requires it.

Overall, based on the information available here, this is a complete failure with no ..... NO saving grace.

I considered it more likely than not because of Freesat's involvement ...

Nope, was never going to happen, given Freesat's origins.

Only hope for this thing now is that the price given in recent posts is out by at least a 100 quid ...

Yes, an RRP of €59.99 would be fair.

Do Sky/Virgin/Vodafone/eir provide 7 day rollback?

I can see that being attractive for users when it comes out, e.g. you go to a match and can come home and watch it straight away on the tv.

Will all programmes be covered under the rollback?

One other thing. One person mentioned that the box might be linux based. Does that mean one could set it up with 7 day epg for satellite?

No, Linux does not equal open source. Humax Foxsat was the last of these kind of boxes that could be 'enhanced' afaia. (& it seemed to be only 1 guy behind it.)

Blame the building boom. Bricks are getting very pricey :D

I wonder will they be listed of Daft.ie as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭PabloAndRoy

This box is a bit of an embarrassment.

I think even the most cynical among us are disappointed in the capabilities.

For approximately €200, anyone with a bit of linux know-how can easily build a better system than this with combined 7 day EPG, remote access and EPG driven timer recordings and add multi room over IP for approx €35 per room.

OK, not RTE player or TG4 player, but that would be only differentiator.

well f that for a game of cowboys

I've gone for this, there's currently a 10% discount with the code freesat10, however it is for a fixed number of units rather than time period.

    https://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/freesat/humax-hdr-1100s-2tb-freesat-recorder-black.html

I've a panasonic tv that can record (hoping that will do for saorview) but I'm having mixed results with that as it's recording some progs and not others and sometimes I'm getting a message that the Ex HD (320gb western digital passport) isn't being recognised.

Well I am after pre-ordering one of the combos.

My existing Triax combo is a pain finding recordings.
The rte player and the rollback on this will be handy to have.

I am not sure what price people expected to pay.
I think I paid a similar price for my Triax when it first came out.

Given that this is only €20 dearer than the ordinary Connect box (without sat channels) this seems to be decent value.

It's the same box, only €20 dearer.
