I see they're no longer supplying any Freesat boxes either, which might be part of the reason? Only Humax is listed on the Freesat website for STB's.

It may partially explain the long delay

Manhattan did plan to launch a Freesat Freetime box according to reports about 2 years ago but nothing since. Only 2 Freeview boxes available from them it appears and none of them Freeview Play (HbbTV). Are they exiting the STB market? It would explain the delay.

From the new Vestel range launched at IBC2017 I assume - https://www.hbbtv.org/news-events/ibc-2017-is-finally-here/

    DVB-T/T2 - http://vestelinternational.com/en/consumer-electronics/set-top-box/hd-dvb-t-t2/
    This is the DVB-S2 version - http://vestel.co.uk/en/consumer-electronics/set-top-box/hd-dvb-s2/

Is there a combi version? They have 1 combi in their 2017 range (p.28)

the box is being made and distributed by Shomar so it'll be branded as Powerpoint.
They have stock in the country and are taking orders now. But apparently they have to wait for the go ahead from rte before they send them out.
They're launching with no built in hard drive rrp €199 , but a 2nd version will be available in March with a hard drive.

The devil in the detail is what EPG it will it offer on Satellite ? (v. unlikely to offer Freesat)
Will it be SaorSat compatible , as in proper channel numbers ?
    No CI slot ?

I think at €199 base price they will offer Freesat. The only way they can shift serious units of this box at that price is with a Freesat EPG. I hope i'm not wrong.:D

freesat and saorview ,both with full 7 day guide.

That's a box that will sell right there.

I thought you said the first box costing €199 won't have a hard drive, so how can it have series link, remote record etc ? At €199 without a built in hard drive, it's an extortionist price. By the way, seeing as information about Saorview Connect is up there with the third secret of Fatima, how do you know it will definitely have a Freesat 7 day EPG in it ?

For 200 quids it better have a HD but as this is Ireland and a product specifically for Ireland maybe that is the price for a "dumb" box.

If that is indeed the case it will blow all the other paytv providers away who are offering basic packages for about €30 like Sky, Virgin, Vodafone and Eir.

Most people will have external hard drives already so a combo box for €200 is good value.

Of course, if the box has provision for an internal HD it will not be a problem.

It says it has 3 players on demand.
    Rte, tg4 and All4??

Edit: My mistake. It was point no.3 I saw (not 3 players)

It says there that Now/Next only on satellite.

It also says connection to external hard drive not available til mid 2018 (with software update)

    Without a Freesat like EPG it's a rip-off IMO at €199

.... and no space for an internal HDD it seems :(

About the tuners ....... how many muxes and transponders can be used concurrently?

It seems maybe only one of each ...... which if so is useless for a modern STB.

only now and next on freesat is very disappointing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,574 ✭✭✭Gerry Wicklow

If it's only now/next then it probably won't have any form of autotuning either making it a glorified combo box with closed firmware. You'd get a better enigma box with more functionality for a lot less.

From the screenshot it looks like the terrestrial and satellite guides are separate. I wonder will it even be possible to integrate the two.

Looks like a complete wasted opportunity.

I think it really needs the inbuilt hard drive, they should price it €50 more if that's what it would have take.

Just noticed also "record to ext HDD USB (firmware upgrade 2018)" so they don't even have that much working right! Jeez!!!

Exactly. So basically you can only view previous viewings if they are on the player.
You won't be able to record tv3 or any of the satellite channels (until the software update)

A dead duck I am afraid.

If the Rte player app gets updated with Chromecast functionality you would have no need for this box.

    It is such a shame.

Some people like might the remote record feature but it is of limited use if you can't use it for the satellite channels.

It is noteworthy that the existing saorview app does not show any of the satellite channels.

Has anyone an idea what it would have cost RTE to licence the freesat epg?

My initial reaction is that it is a load of junk.

I can buy a combo STB for about €60 which integrates the two tuner lists and records to external USB HDD, which is better than this.

So the €140 is for the streaming/catch up or whatever it manages.

Is there something I am missing that might make this a worthwhile purchase for someone (not me)?

I don't think you are. In fairness I think the sentiment here was that this box would disappoint.

I have been holding out to see what this connect was going to offer ! Any suggestions as to what the best least expensive option would be ? (Point me to another thread if necessary)

This is one of the cheapest combo boxes and you can have autoupdate if you wish - via broadband apparently.
You can also get a Boards discount.

    http://www.freetv.ie/combo-box/

Best & least expensive are mutually exclusive ;)

Folks is there a lot involved in getting these enigma type boxes set up with series link for satellite.
A link to steps involved would be great.
