^ Yep, getting solid reviews too.

King has been having a good year for adaptations with this, IT and Mr. Mercedes. Also this in development:

I just noticed Bill Skarsgård is part of the main cast

^ Yep, doesn't appear to be as Pennywise though!

In “Castle Rock,” Skarsgård will play a young man with an unusual legal problem. He joins a cast that includes Sissy Spacek, André Holland, Jane Levy and Melanie Lynskey.

It's interesting sure but easily it's no to both because they aren't set in Ireland or relate to Irish culture in terms of their content Get rich or die trying is an American film, reign of fire is a British film.

That would be how I would interpret things. It's fair to say Grabbers isn't an Irish production of course but as a piece of film it's about as Irish as they come imo.

Obviously this is just my own interpretation of what makes a film of a place.

There's no straight-forward answer to that question. I don't think an Irish film has to be set in Ireland or deal with Irish culture, no more than I think that of American films. I don't consider The Matchmaker an Irish film, for example.

At the same time it feels like a bit of a stretch to label the likes of Room or I am Not a Serial Killer as Irish films. But or course the Irish Film Board has every right to hold both out there as success stories for the domestic industry.

Sight & Sound give the production details of every film they review and you'll often see 3 or 4 different countries listed as its country of origin, which seems to consider where it was shot, the director's nationality and where the funding came from.

Yeah, its a shame, the film was very enjoyable. The first few episodes of the show could be described as intriguing, but then it descends into a parody, and not in a good way. If I start a show, I have to finish, so ended watching them all.

Not only is Mr Mercedes a great King adaptation, but its a great tv show in its own right, It's very well made. I'm only two episodes in so far, but I am really enjoying it so far.

If your going to start a show, I would totally recommend Mr Mercedes over the Mist. You can catch the first two episodes on RTE player, and then every Tuesday at 10.15pm on RTÉ One.

    An Unfinished Life

Directed by Lasse Hallstrom, starring Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Lopez.

I read the book of this a while ago and really enjoyed it. The film is a pretty faithful adaptation. Lopez plays a single mother who is fleeing an abusive boyfriend and ends up looking for refuge from her estranged father in law, Redford, on his ranch in Wyoming. I know that set up probably doesn't sound that appealing but it's a really nicely told story about family, guilt, forgiveness... and a bear. There's some beautiful scenery in it too and Redford is great, as are Lopez and the kid that plays her daughter.

I'm not saying drop what you're doing and watch this right now, but if you're looking for something not too taxing but still engaging you could do worse.

And we suspect The Punisher will be in there somewhere as well but unsure when.

I suspected The Punisher would be out some time in November. Would they release Stranger Things and The Punisher in the same month?

Netflix are now making 6 to 8 part documentaries that can easily be done in a 2 hour feature thanks to the success of Making a Murderer. The Keepers and Kalief Browder docs were long drawn out stories, and while the latter was way more interesting than the former there was no need for so many episodes. Documentaries are my favorite film type and the one thing they are suppose to do is keep the viewer engaged, but I got very bored with these two docs and especially with The Keepers and struggled to finish it.

I think Ava Duvernay was asked why she chose to make 13th as a film rather than a series, given how much more in depth they could have gone on a lot of things. Her response was similar to what you say above. She wanted people to pay attention and given the subject matter she didn't think people would necessarily want to keep coming back for more.
I think she said something too about it being a starting point for various conversations and others should take up those issues in more depth. Kalief Browder is mentioned briefly in 13th so perhaps the more in depth look at his story is as a result of 13th, of course it may just be coincidence.

As much as I loved Kalief story, you've a point. I think it would have been far better as a 5 or even 4 part series. There were multiple times it showed the same footage more than once.

Oh and as far as I'm aware, Netflix didn't make it. They have exclusive rights to it on this side of the pond though, hence the Netflix original tag.

Has anybody watched big mouth yet?

Someone recommended You Get Me, I thought it was dreadful.

I did only get through about 40 minutes of it though.

    I was
still left devastated by it though.

I'd agree with you on The Keepers, but I thought the length of the Kalief Browser doc was justified. It gave a better sense of the whole sad story. Gave you a sense of how the events effected those around him.

Watched Gerald's Game last night. Takes a while to get going but in the end was fascinating. Carla Gugino was brilliant, don't see enough of her these days.

Big Mouth is worth a watch. It can be a bit juvenile, obviously, but it's better than I expected from watching the trailers. Give it a couple of episodes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,720 ✭✭✭tigger123

First episode of any sitcom is always less funny than the following episodes. The writers need to set the tone, introduce characters, set everything up.

You should always give any sitcom a few episodes before you judge it.

Probably mentioned before but the Good Place starts off slow and gets very very funny by the end of season 1, and is rocking it so far in season 2.

I went out for a while Saturday night, came home and the wife had started it and got through 8 episodes. She is now on episode 2 of season 2, safe to say she is enjoying it immensely.
