DID I say that? I must be a hell of guesser if I haven't ever listened to him. As I said only a few posts above, I encounter him during my daily station hoping. Newstalk would actually be very listenable from 9am through to 4pm if you removed Hook from the schedule and replaced him with something substantially less odious. So yeah, I want him off the air.

You said you turn him off after 5 minutes while looking for something while station hopping so yeah you don't isten to him by any reasonable definition of "listening to a radio show"

And how many times do you hear of instances like this, compared to the innumerable amount of times we hear of motorists causing death by their own negligence? Very very rarely for cyclists. But how many of those motorists are done for manslaughter? Rarer than hen's teeth.

and today he's been sentenced to 18 months in a young offenders institute.

    George is oh so controversial.

This pathetic argument again? Being for free speech is not the same as agreeing with George's comments.

I wouldn't pay any attention to what they have to say, they disappeared up their own arseholes a long time ago.

Listening to Ciara Kelly today. I've always liked when she's on. Is it just me or could anybody else see her doing a Gerry Ryan type show? Or is that type of phone in show old fashioned & dead?

It was alright today. Not great. Ciara Kelly is not a natural but she could improve. Don't mind the idea of a radio phone in show as long as it doesn't descend into "ah here Joe" territory.

    George is oh so controversial.

This is conflating two separate points and trying to make them one.

George doesn't share the same opinions on many topics that his listeners do.

People listened because he was a unique individual with his own view of the world. You don't have to agree with somebody all the time to like them, the same way you don't have to be the same age, gender or race to like someone.

Interesting post on politics.ie from a Newstalk insider makes for horrible reading and we are pretty much spot on about Chris leading the Hook out campaign

Loads of their songs are absolutely fantastic.

But the fact that they have moved from the world of entertainment into talking about social issues while still wearing plastic bags on their head makes them look a little silly imo.

I'm not including the Willie O Dea song which is very funny and entertaining satire. I'm talking about them going on the Late Late Show and just 'talking politics'.

The OTB guys not liked Hook over his concussion talk doesn't make sense as they're of that opinion too. They are pretty left wing "you can't say that" so not liking Hook for what he says would make more sense. The conversation between Hook and the guy doing the sports bit of the news bulletin is regularly a bit.......awkward.....

That goes way back to when the OTB team split and half left due to NT refusing to give them an hour of george's drivetime slot, that crew became the second captains

VERY interesting to contrast that with the secret rte producer twitter account, specifically the last few paragraphs

What?? What are the two separate points that Im trying to make into one. Your post sounds intelligent but isnt saying anything.

George's fans for a week have been talking as if he was Christopher Hitchens pointing out the hypocrisy in the modern world, and providing a lone voice against the consensus. That, you dont have to like it, but he has every right to say what he needs to say. This is aside from the victim blaming, the dog whistling anti immigrant, anti science etc etc etc. that he does. But isnt it a terrible state of affairs that someone who is swimming against the tide, and asking the questions everyone is afraid to ask, is being sacked because the cosy consensus, exemplified by COD, cant handle the truth.

Except when you are asking questions that are actually tacking the mainstream and not just ****stirring for 30 text, like the Rubberbandits did, then George gets all offended that they were allowed to insult the majority religion of the country with our licence fee. One step away from Fox News's war on Christmas.

The tackling the man, not the ball, response to the rubberbandits is also very fox news.

Seriously, read letters to a young contrarian/ watch Christopher Hitchens for someone who asked the hard questions with the rigour to back it up. Compare that to the nonsense that Hook parades as informed opinion. Ye'll enjoy it.

agree with some of his opinions e.g, head injuries in sports

Would like to see him back

Goes back to bad management if thats true and someone like Chris can pull the strings, if it was my organization I'd be fuming.

Donohue maybe coming a liability for the station, if he cannot hold a drive time audience he certainly won't hold that slot.

That's 4 and a half years a go now so I'm not sure how much the current OTB crew had to do with the previous one.

Also I'm not sure why they would be annoyed with Hook if it was a management decision. I have to say I think it would have been a bad idea too.

Several people are still there i believe, also it was put about later by the lads who left that George pushed back on it I believe although not 100% on that.

As good as the show is now it never has returned to the heights it was before that split so anyone still there might definitely hold a grudge

The show isn't as good as the presenters aren't as good.

Also if they still hold a grudge over that now it reflects badly on them. I would well believe that it management who made the decision regardless of what Hook thought.

Edit: Now that I think about it I think the Second Captains lads were getting a bit fed up with the show in Newstalk and were looking to change it, so that's why they were happy to resign when they didn't get what they wanted.

hardly gonna agree with it, considering the bad light it puts him and the OTB crew in?

I don't know, but I'm more inclined to believe the person who but their name to it.

Considering hes directly named and criticised in it he's hardly an objective source.

Im not saying I believe it either but richie isn't credible on it

Is an anonymous source credible though, I thought it was relevant to point out someone who is named by that source is claiming it's nonsense.

Also, that piece on p.ie could have been written by or based on the speculations of any number of the Hook defenders on this thread.

There's enough detail in there for me to believe it's insight from a credible source.
Of course he's gonna say it's rubbish, what else can he say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Morgans

Yeah, kicking against the echo chamber while accepting anonymous sources. The OTB lads made it publicly known that they fell out with Hook to the extent that they left the station and a brand they worked for a decade to create. That this doesnt get mentioned, but that the new OTB are upset over Hook's view on concussions sounds a huge stretch.

I read it again there, and while of course it may be true, there isn't much insight in it that hasnt been speculated upon in this thread and elsewhere. Donoghue wanting Hook's job, everyone is a lefty liberal, and dont like George and Ivan (and now Pat!). It smells to me because of the lack of any insight that wasnt speculated on.
