    That's awfully bizarre.

Nah I'd batter mine if they changed channel

Greg Gaughran is playing Amy Winehouse now.

...and now he's playing Jack Johnson.

    Classic rock???

Had the pleasure of listening to 6 music today...what a relief.. ...btw Microdisney and The Divine comedy played....and they dont even have to play Irish stuff... ....

All BBC stations play lots of Irish music. Far more than most Irish stations play...

    Classic rock???

They're an "adult music" station. Not a classic rock one.

How anyone can call Jack Johnson rock never mind classic is beyond me. He's not that bad but the truth is he is a POP artist.

i always was of the understanding that it was licenced to be a classic rock service.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

SPIN 1038 was licenced to be a dance music service. But they play pretty much anything in the charts.

SPINs licence is not a 'dance music' licence

no . some of us did think it was at the time however. a lot referred to it as the up and coming dance licence and of course back then i and others wouldn't have been in the position to check it out, nor would have been interested enough really.
i remember the disapointment though when it launched and the realisation came that there would be no licenced dance station. instead we got more pop music, fake posh accents and something that was in my view rather childesh sounding compared to now.
at least we had a lot of pirate activity back then, and we still do have a bit today. not forgetting online radio. so no dance licence really needed now as us dance music fans are catered for by better means.

Well, a station that plays Jack Johnson is not a classic rock station.

Guitar based music or something like that. Not classic rock.

BAI signs contract with Radio Nova

    4 Aug 2010 Print Text

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (“BAI”) has today (Wednesday 4th August) signed a ten-year sound broadcasting contract with Classic Rock Broadcasting Limited (trading as Radio Nova) for the provision of a classic rock music-based commercial sound broadcasting service for a general audience in the 25-54 age group on the FM band in Dublin City, County and Commuter Belt. This will be complemented by a credible and reliable news service and an engaging and informative sports service. Speaking at the contract signing, Mr. Bob Collins, Chairperson of the BAI said: “Radio Nova is one of a range of commercial local radio services which provides quality and diversity in programming to listeners in the Dublin City, County and Commuter Belt area. They are a welcome addition to the commercial radio sector and we wish them every success over the term of their sound broadcasting contract”. Classic Rock Broadcasting Limited was represented at the contract signing by David Tighe, Chief Executive; Kevin Brannigan, Mike Ormonde and Rosemary Heydon, Directors. Mr. Bob Collins, Chairperson, and Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive, signed on behalf of the BAI. The service is due to commence broadcasting under the contract at the beginning of September.

They need to look at their current playlist so, because my idea of classic rock is different than theirs.

Not to mention the "Mr You're Not Gonna Get THAT for €250" insurance ads have not stopped, urgh they drive me away from the station. We never had to put up with them on TXFM!

You do realise that's why there is no more TXFM! Be careful what you wish for :p

People keep saying i "hate " Nova...as i've said (00's times) i dont hate it ,i hate what its become..its no different from the rest, and with the latest batch of "rock" tracks i find it a bit depressing tbh.."Why not switch to another station" i hear you cry...i do when i can (6music/zenith as you know) ..Its clear to me now that Nova got its foot in the door with the "classic rock " license but has morphed into just another Dublin station...the BAI should take a look back at the contract again.....40 years has become more like 4 years....;)

I am referring to a very specific series of ads.

Repeating myself but....(a) Rock is a very broad genre, (b) on their original application they included a sample playlist - it included eg Duffy - Mercy

Nova is doing what all stations do - tweaking the format albeit keeping to its classic rock licence - the word classic has an interpretation beyond pre noughties.

The 'tweaking' has been very obvious since August 1st - personally I don't like the very high rotation of eg Spoon and too often lately there have been two or three songs played (new and old) together that I hadn't heard before or tracks that at best could be considered obscure album tracks.

In time the format will settle - I am guessing somewhere between classic/old rock tracks and new current music

TXFM! would have allowed them if they could have got them. They'd have played the angelus if it brought in money :D

I'm listening right now. The last four songs have been Lou Reed, the Charlatans. the Doors and Stereophonics. I'll take that any day of the week and I don't know of any other radio station in Ireland that comes close to that sort of music on a weekday morning.

I'm not sure what people want, other than something to moan about. And they're absolutely nailing that. This latest wheeze that a commercial radio station should turn down money because the ads are a bit annoying is hilarious.

    +1

The music on Nova is mostly good. Far, far better than any other Irish radio station IMO and even better since TXFM closed and they introduced a bit of Indie / Alt. Is it perfect? No, but then again everyone has their own opinion.

They play the odd track I don't like and I find a couple of the presenters annoying for sure but looking at the bigger picture but it is the only radio station I can actually leave on without having to channel hopping after 5mins.

That's because Greg Gaughren plays a better selection from the playlist than some of his colleagues.
I do listen to nova, it's the only music station I generally don't feel like reaching for the dial and a bit like others I don't hate it, just would hate to see it getting watered down any further.

If you hop in and out for 10 minutes a couple of times a day then you might be fooled alright....:)

Just heard Courtney for the first time in a couple of weeks, you just kind of forget just how bad he is.
"My learned colleague, the leader of the opposition, a coalition on the...." and his stupid f*cking sound affects.

I think Nova could do with a real shake up, both in the presenters and in the playlists, but that's just me ....
