He didn't get the media attention and no social media posts from him or his gf so the NFL had nothing on him........

Well he didn't have a team at the time so I'd say he could still get a ban now that he has signed with Seattle.

Nothing stopping the NFL handing out future bans. They have in the past.

    Bortles to be released?

    Bortles to be released?

I genuinely can't believe he's last as long as he did. Like anyone who's watched him can tell he's terrible. He's single handedly holding that team back at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,733 ✭✭✭MileHighGuy

Well coupled with the poor preseason performance so far, is the fact that his contract is fully guaranteed against injury for next year. No way they play hm and risk being on the hook for 20m next year. I'd say he'll be released - I can't think of any team that would want to take him on (please god not the broncos) so no trade value imo.

They will have to if he loses his spot this year to Henne. 6m Cap hit next year is 16 but he is guaranteed 19m of that contract next season. Which would be a double blow releasing him next year or as MHG said if he gets injured and goes on IR they are on the hook for the money this year and next.

They're in the similar position the Redskins were in with RGIII. They wrapped him in cotton wool his final year and didn't let him near the field to make sure he wouldn't get injured and be due the $19m

That's the one! I was trying to remember the exact same scenario happening somewhere else recently.

Yep, they made sure RG3 saw little/no action that year.

He threw for ~4.5k yards and 35 TDs a season ago. He'd be picked up in a second if he was cut.

EDIT: Reading this back, it sounds like I think he is any good. To be clear, I do not :P But some HC somewhere will have the ego to think that he can fix him. We haven't seen the end of Bortles by a long shot.

True, he'll land somewhere if cut, but not traded - unless the Jags threw in a couple of draft picks ala Cleveland taking Osweiler off Houston.

I could see a Blaine Gabbert/Mark Sanchez-like outcome for him. Picked up somewhere as a backup and maybe get another chance to start somewhere down the line.

All aboard the Josh Woodrum bandwagon :D

4/4 for 85 Yds with a passing TD and two rushing TDs versus the Redskins
8-10 for 110yds and two TDs versus the Dolphins

    18_WoodrumStory_news.jpg

An UDFA from Liberty he has been signed and cut by the Giants, Colts, Bears and Bills. Has also worked out for the Chiefs, Lions and Redskins

Only two FCS quarterbacks were at the 2016 combine. The other we all know was subsequent number 2 pick Carson Wentz

Yeah everyone loves the underdog backup QB. Same happened with University of North Carolina Bryan Renner in 2014 who was a Ravens preseason star and got cut :( Bounced around the league but never made a roster

The Ravens have used rookie backup QBs before, Tyrod Taylor being one. I'm hoping Woodrum beats out Ryan Mallett. Not to revisit the whole Kapernick debate but nobody talks about him anymore

85 TDs in 4 passing attempts is some going in fairness:pac::pac:

Those stats are padded so much by garbage time they should largely be ignored. He'll never ever be any use in the NFL. I'm still baffled they drafted him in the first place. It was a terrible pick from the word go.

All this bad stuff about Bortles.

All I have to say on the matter is that about ten teams need to cut their starting QB before we get to Bortles.

True but Jacksonville don't care about these other teams and they probably don't want to be on the hook for close to 20m for a guy they don't see as their future QB.

Not often you see kicker taunt anyone. But Walsh nails a 52 yard kick with the Seahawks and then points to Zimmer on the Vikings sideline :pac:

Would it not be more appropriate for him to save the taunting for when he makes a kick against Minnesota in the playoffs?

He could end up looking really stupid for doing that right now.

Apparently he was getting jeered by Vikings players/staff when he missed the first one. So when he nailed the next two he pointed right at them.

    So the story goes, anyway.

You think there's 10 worse starting QBs in the league than Bortles?

I can think of a few, with Glennon, Goff, Hackenberg, Tom Savage & Osweiller. But at least Bears, Texans and Browns have young rookies and Goff is only in his 2nd year - although he looked as bad as imaginably possible last year.

Broncos maybe with Siemien, but again probably too early to give up on either him or Paxton Lynch. So I've got 6. 7 at a push if you include Flacco.

3 (Hackenberg, Osweiller and Savage) of them probably aren't even going to be starter though! and as you said I think Goff deserves to have the same amount of time as Bortles has had before you can right him off, and I personally would rather see what Glennon could do with a full season rather than go with Bortles. I'd say the only teams he'd have a chance of starting on are the Jets, 49ers, Broncos, possibly Browns and the Ravens if Flacco doesn't come back from injury

Yeah and no, more likely the Vikings just look stupid for getting rid of one of the best young kickers in the NFL. It really irritates me how eager teams seemto get rid of them, he had a really poor year last season but had been mostly quality before that. Mason Crosby was up and down early on and had one woeful year where he hit about 63% of his FGs but sticking with the guy gave GB one of the top kickers in the league who can perform well in bad conditions and cold weather. I fully get if the kicker just isn't up to snuff, but Walsh is probably a top 10 guy and a former all pro.

How anyone thinks Bortles is a decent QB is beyond me. As someone said above his 'great' season, he threw over half the yardage and TDs when the jags were already two or three scores behind. Frustrating team to watch the jags, so many good picks (in terms of early draft picks) wasted. Huge talent on offense not being realised with blake bottles at QB

He did look an awful lot better after the change in coaches last season to be fair, though it's kind of funny this came up a few days after Cutler went to Miami since I spent a chunk of the offseason saying Cutler could be a great fit in Jacksonville if they didn't have faith in Cutler......... :p

Interesting to see how Goff has looked so far this offseason, the Rams are 25/1 to win their division and while I would still put the Seahawks to do it I think that's great value. 49ers are still in recovery mode, Cardinals are really hard to call but Palmer looked done last year, Seahawks like I said are the favourites but not quite the team they were a few years back. If Goff can get going with Gurley, Watkins, Robert Woods etc they could be a pretty big surprise because their defense is fairly nasty and has been for some time, and they're no longer Jeff Fisher'ed at head coach. Was a little surprised to see only the Jets, Browns and 49ers as bigger underdogs to win their divisions to be honest.

No way Bortles would start ahead of Siemian - Siemian is underrated - he is limited in terms of ability but is very intelligent (one of the smarter QBs in the NFL) and being smart counts for a lot as QB. Bortles is lacking something between the ears - and it is a problem with quite a few NFL QBs.
