    Guantanamo

Oliver Stone to Direct ‘Guantanamo’ TV Series for Weinstein Company
Weinstein Television announced Monday that it has acquired rights to dramatic series “Guantanamo,” which marks Oliver Stone’s first foray into scripted television. Stone is known for tackling controversial subjects: He directed the film “Snowden,” and recently the documentary “The Putin Interviews,” which premieres on Showtime in June. He will direct all of season one, per Weinstein Television.

“Guantanamo” will tell the stories of the prison from multiple perspectives — from prisoners to soldiers, lawyers to journalists. The Guantanamo Bay detention camp was opened after the September 11 attacks to interrogate and detain suspects in the war on terror, and has since been a focal point for human rights groups concerning the treatment of detainees. Daniel Voll created the show and will be showrunner; Alexandra Milchen will produce.

“Oliver and I are excited about creating an immersive, highly cinematic series, filled with twists and turns, that explores the dark side of how America prosecutes its war on terror,” Voll said in a press release.

The Weinstein Company co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said the “explosive material” will make the show both “newsworthy and super watchable.”

Weinstein Television will take the series to market in the upcoming weeks.

    The Originals has been cancelled.

The Originals to End After Season 5
Creator Julie Plec made the announcement on Twitter, via a letter to the fans inviting them “to help us say goodbye to The Originals, which begins shooting its fifth and final season on Monday.
“It’s both a gift and a burden to be able to control the ending of a series,” she continued. “Many shows are not lucky enough to have a hand in deciding when the end has come. Being able to celebrate the completion of The Vampire Diaries was a joyful and deeply emotional ride, a luxury gifted by Mark Pedowitz at The CW and Peter Roth at WBTV, who, as TV fans themselves, know what it means when a fan is able to say goodbye. Ending a show is always bittersweet, but for me, it’s a true blessing to be a part of making that choice.”

    Picnic at Hanging Rock

Amazon Picks Up Australian Series ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ Starring Natalie Dormer
The series, a re-imagining of Joan Lindsay’s classic Australian novel, hails from director Larysa Kondracki and distributor FremantleMedia International.

Dormer stars as English headmistress Mrs Hester Appleyard — a woman whose dead husband instructs her daily life and whose peculiarities are surely hiding dark skeletons — in Picnic at Hanging Rock, which chronicles the mysterious disappearances of three schoolgirls and one teacher on Valentine’s Day 1900. The complex, interwoven narrative follows the subsequent investigation and the event’s far-reaching impact on the students, families and staff of Appleyard College, and on the nearby township. The college student roles are played by Lily Sullivan (Camp) as Miranda Reid, Madeleine Madden (Tomorrow When The War Began) as Marion Quade, Samara Weaving (Monster Trucks) as Irma Leopold, Ruby Rees (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries) as Edith Horton and introducing Inez Curro as Sara Waybourne.

“The stylish re-imagining of the provocative Picnic at Hanging Rock story will no doubt capture contemporary audiences across the US,” said Caroline Kusser, SVP, Sales & Distribution for FremantleMedia International in North America. “With fantastic scripts, outstanding cast and bold editorial direction from Larysa Kondracki, Picnic at Hanging Rock is set to be a must-see series in 2018. We are thrilled to be working with Amazon Prime Video to bring this powerful drama to US screens.”

The sale was based in part on a sizzle made by Kondracki who has been overseeing the entire production in addition to directing the pilot and two additional episodes.

Picnic at Hanging Rock, which will have its world premiere on Foxtel in Australia in 2018, is a FremantleMedia Australia production made with key production investment from Screen Australia. The series was shot in Victoria, Australia, with the assistance of the Victorian Government through Film Victoria.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are bringing their Boston pride to Showtime.

The cabler has picked up a drama pilot “City on a Hill” from the Oscar winners, who will executive produce the project.

Based on an original idea by Affleck and Chuck MacLean (“Boston Strangler”), who wrote the script, “City on a Hill” is a fictional account of what was called the “Boston Miracle.” In the early ’90s, corruption and racism was the norm in Boston, until an African-American district attorney from Brooklyn arrives in the city, advocating change. He forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran who is invested in maintaining the status quo. The two take on a family of armored car robbers in a case that eventually upends the city’s criminal justice system.

The pilot will be directed by Gavin O’Connor (“The Accountant”), who will serve as executive producer along with James Mangold (“Logan”) and Jennifer Todd (“Memento”) of Pearl Street Films

    One Day She’ll Darken

Chris Pine, Patty Jenkins to Reteam on TNT Series
After delivering a smash hit with “Wonder Woman,” director Patty Jenkins and star Chris Pine will re-team on the new TNT drama series “One Day She’ll Darken.”

TNT has given a green light a straight-to-series order with Jenkins attached to direct the pilot and potentially additional episodes. Pine is attached to star in all six episodes.

Sam Sheridan, author of “A Fighter’s Heart and The Disaster Diaries” is set to write the six-episode series, inspired by the autobiography of Fauna Hodel. The series is being produced by Turner’s Studio T, with Jenkins, Michael Sugar, Sheridan and Pine serving as executive producers. Plans are to shoot the show this fall.

“One Day She’ll Darken” tells the story of Hodel who was given away by her teenage birth mother to a black restroom attendant in a Nevada casino in 1949. As Hodel begins to investigate the secrets to her past, she follows a sinister trail that swirls ever closer to an infamous Hollywood gynecologist, Dr. George Hodel, a man involved in the darkest Hollywood debauchery, the spider in the web around the legendary “Black Dahlia” murder of Elizabeth Short in Los Angeles in 1947.

Pine will play Jay Singletary, a former Marine-turned-hack reporter and paparazzo. Jay was disgraced over his story about Hodel years prior, but now he sees a glimmer of redemption. Jay sees an opportunity, but is also caught in a moral quandary.

A release date is unknown at this time

    Ascendant

Starz Is Developing the Divergent Television Series Ascendant
Starz is reportedly picking up where the Divergent films left off, by turning the scrapped fourth movie in the franchise, Ascendant, into a television series. After disappointing box-office numbers for both the 2015 and 2016 sequels Insurgent and Allegiant, Lionsgate announced last summer that it intended to take the final installment of the dystopian YA story straight to the small screen, and use the TV movie to kick off a spin-off series. The casting has not been announced, but star Shailene Woodley has already voiced her disinterest. Maybe now that the premium network is on board, Woodley will change her mind, but it seems doubtful.

    Miami Vice

‘Miami Vice’ Reboot in Works at NBC From Vin Diesel
A reboot of classic cop drama “Miami Vice” is in the works at NBC, Variety has learned.

The project hails from the team behind the “The Fast and the Furious” franchise with Vin Diesel’s production company, One Race Television, teaming up with Chris Morgan Productions, which is headed by Chris Morgan. Morgan has written six of the “Fast & Furious” films to date. However, no executive producers have been locked in yet, as deals are still being hammered out.

One Race TV is under a deal at Universal Television, which is the studio behind the “Miami Vice” project.

Peter Macmanus will write the script, based on the original series. While executive producers haven’t been set, it’s more than likely Macmanus, Morgan, and Diesel will all serve as EPs, along with more staffers from One Race TV, and Chris Morgan Prods, including Ainsley Davies. Shana Waterman, head of TV for One Race, shepherded the project.

The original “Miami Vice” aired on NBC from 1984-1990 for five seasons (112 episodes). It starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo Tubbs, two Miami narcotics detectives. It also starred Saundra Santiago, Edward James Olmos, and Michael Talbott. It featured a long list of guest stars that included Gene Simmons, Pam Grier, Laurence Fishburne, Viggo Mortensen, and John Leguizamo. Michael Mann executive produced the original series, and went on to produce and direct the 2006 film adaptation starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

That's unfortunate. It was constantly overshadowed by Modern Family despite becoming the superior show as the years went on and could've easily gone on another few seasons. At least they seem to be ending on their own terms.

    Karate Kid

‘Karate Kid’ Sequel Series With Ralph Macchio, William Zabka Greenlit at YouTube Red
A sequel series to the classic film “The Karate Kid” is set to launch on YouTube Red.

Currently titled “Cobra Kai,” the series would reunite original film stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. The 10-episode, half-hour series, coming to YouTube Red in 2018, picks up thirty years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. A down-and-out Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now successful Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi.

“The minute I heard about this project, I knew we had to have it. ‘The Karate Kid’ became an instant classic in the 1980s, and still resonates with audiences around the world and on YouTube today,” said Susanne Daniels, global head of original content for YouTube. “We’re thrilled to partner with Sony TV, Overbrook and the talented writing team led by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg to add a fresh, new comedic twist on one of Hollywood’s most storied rivalries.”

James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett will executive produce for Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television Studios.
