Funny how you refer to them as a "herd" - it's almost as if you don't view them as people.

If a large group of people, whatever their race, parked a load of caravans on a public road, and refused to leave, the law would treat them the same way as they treat Travellers.

I have the pleasure of living in close proximity to some travellers. Let me enlighten some to the diverse culture I have witnessed first hand over the years:

Every January and July at least 2 of the family have the latest reg car/van despite the same people always collecting money in the post office.

The children especially the young boys (under 10) like to grab the younger girks by the hair and with a closed fist punch them when they cant get their way

The same boys scour the estate for bikes,scooters,flickers etc left in gardens at night and take them . Ive caught them twice and when i approached their mother i was told they dont know what they are doing as they are only 'childer'

One unfortunate local landlord rented their house to one of them. House was given back a year later minus the wood floors and kitchen tiles. Was 2 skip loads of rubbish out the back.

Every communion involves stretched hummers and princess carriages etc. None of these work. Not even tarmac or paving. They do sweet f*ck all, all day everyday

Not one of them has a wheelie bin. But somehow we have a problem with fly tipping in one of the country lane ways..wonder who that is?

The local Gardai are always laughing and joking with them too.

Thats a couple of things...but sure arent they a great bunch of people altogether

The Gardai will be blamed shortly by a certain poster when he's finished putting Muslim pedophiles on the same level as former football hooligans. Never mind the scrote breaking the law, shure it's not his fault the police won't enforce the rules.

I lived around the corner for some Travellers for several years. They were grand. One of them sharpened the blades on my lawnmower once.

Now I am not for one second trying to say that all Travellers are "grand" - only a total dick would make such a sweeping generalisation about an entire group of people.

I am glad you have a positive experience in dealing with them. Unfortunately mine is the opposite.

On the other hand, my father was never the same after the incident and died within a year.
The man worked for almost 50 years in this country, paying taxes and positively contributing to the community; including many years in volunteerism.

This is not a unique story, and I'm sure that we will continue to hear about new traveler incidences because our spineless politicians will not address the traveler issue ............... except of course to give them protected status.

Let them alone! We should respect their unique culture (like beating the sh*t out of the females) and focus on the enrichment they bring to our society; like theft, drugs, marrying your cousin and in the case of the two Kerry travellers, raping and murdering your sister.
Thank God they have a shorter life expectancy....so they don't have to suffer discrimination from law-abiding tax payers longer.

Took my parents years to get over it, actually if i'm honest they still haven't. Our family home was their castle and they lost a lot of that the day those scumbags broke down that front door. I'll never respect them or their ilk.
