True but he's quite clearly better than a lot of the second and third string QBs currently on rosters across the league. We all know why he didn't get one of those roster spots before now.

IF Kaepernick signs for the Ravens and gets a chance to start in the regular season, I genuinely think Flacco may not get his spot back this year.

Why? Genuine question. Is it just that Harbaughs bring out the best in Kaep?

Greg Roman may be tight ends coach but he has a large input into the offense

He is "senior offensive assistant" which could mean anything but he wasn't hired to just be a position coach

Was OC with Kapernick from when he was drafted until 2014. So the link to the Ravens makes sense alright

Ryan Mallet is still number 2 though, well for now

Someone better tell Kapernick the Ravens are always one step away from cap hell. If he's looking for big money he won't find it in Baltimore

I personally think Kaepernick is a more than capable starter in this league, whereas looking at it objectively Flacco (aside from a bounce-back season under Kubiak in 2014, and I do accept he hasn't had much help also) has been at worst terrible and at best below average ever since the Super Bowl win.

If Kaepernick was to get a chance, I could see him stringing a couple of wins together and carrying things on.

Of course there's so much money tied up in Flacco that it will likely never become an issue and he will probably be back for week one anyway, but by all rights at worst Kaepernick should be coming in immediately as #2 ahead of Mallet based on his play alone.

I haven't watched enough of the Ravens to really know how Flacco has been getting on, but any QB should get a pass for any decline in performance while working under Marc Trestman. I mean, if we're giving Kaep a pass for Chip Kelly.

Unless the Montreal Alouettes have a serious wedge of cash squirreled away somewhere, I don't think his options really stretch to finding a big money offer elsewhere.

Kap definitely lost out as a 3rd stringer and maybe a few backup jobs due to his protests.
But he was also bloody awful for the last number of seasons, Chip Kelly or not, he stunk; which seemed to get a bit lost in the whole conversation about the guy.

Flacco def made the most of out his SB in, and hasn't been near that level since. I still think he's better than Kap though.

I think you are wrong on this to be honest. Alot of parents are opting to not allow their kids play in high school. The drop off has been slow and steady. Basketball, Baseball and soccer have seen the pick ups already.

I respect your opinion but from my experience here with High School Football, numbers have not dropped at all.
The more these reports become main stream the bigger the problem for the NFL. Number 1 will be insurance, they wont be able to get any for players welfare and that in itself will be enough to dramatically change the face of the game. Money talks in the world of the NFL and as soon as insurance companies start backing out of covering the game then it's really only a matter of time.

It hasn't happened yet and with American Insurance companies being about the $$$$$ they will set higher premiums for sports like they already do.

I have first hand experience and it has yet to happen here in the US and yes there will be parents who wont let their kids play and that number will increase but not on the scale many think it will. I could be wrong eventually down the line years from now but right now there is no major drop that everyone has expected.

I dunno, but apparently it doesn't.

    @RapSheet
#Ravens signed a QB today. It's David Olson of the KC Phantoms of the CIF -- an arena league. He worked out today (@DraftDiamonds on it 1st)

Interesting move by Ravens. Staying away from Kap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,003 ✭✭✭mikemac2

Olson spent three years at Stanford and one year at Clemson. In his entire college career he has three pass attempts, one completion and that went for a loss!

Buy hey Matt Cassell was at USC for four years stuck behind Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer, never started a game and had twenty pass attempts. Has had a decent career for himself .

Sure who knows but just a camp arm for now. The Ravens don't carry 3 Qbs on the 53

One thing to note is Jimbo had him at Stanford so brotherly influence probably played in here. Weird move either way given the timing.

Yeah, I would have thought Chip Kelly always got the best out of his QB's, whatever his weaknesses QB's tend to do well under him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

Kaep wasn't awful last year. He had nothing around him to help him and had some bad games but so did plenty of other starting QBs. He looked a good step-up from where his play had been the two seasons prior to that.

The idea that he's not one of the 30 best QBs in the league is just not one I can subscribe to.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,626 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

Disagree, he was awful last year. He saw pressure when none existed, he threw it straight to defenders, he missed open receivers and he was rightly benched in favour of Gabbert.

Now that wasn't all on him, there was plenty of blame to go around SF last season but needs to shoulder his share of it.

The frustrating this is/was that he still makes amazing throws now and then, and if he had a bit of consistency and a bit of confidence he could still be very good. The problem with him being a back up is that I'm not sure that he can come in and play in a lot of systems that NFL teams run, they'd have to change their offense quite a bit to accommodate him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

Are you sure you're not thinking of the year before? That's when he got benched? The only time he didn't start last year was when his contract was stopping him from starting.

He didn't throw many picks (4) for someone throwing straight at defenders. I wish Eli threw at defenders more if that's the key to keeping his numbers of picks down!

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure Adrian is a 49ers fan and probably knows his stuff.

IMO Kaepernick was good in one game after he got back in and was pretty much terrible the rest of the time.

Possibly, I thought he was benched at some point, possibly against Chicago, after racking up less than 10 yards by early 4th quarter.

I remember reading a great breakdown on Kaepernick back in 2014 that showed how his statistical decline coincided with the amount of pressure he was getting from his right hand side (the left defensive ends/OLBs of the defense). The point of the article was that even dating back to his days in Nevada, Kaepernick always struggled with pressure coming from his right and was at his worst when being forced to either (i) move to his left in the pocket, or (ii) throw across his body to the left.

I can't for the life of me find the article now but it was a great read and something I started looking out for that year and sure enough, it was pretty evident on film that teams were deliberately overloading their pass rush to their left/Kaepernick's right.

I didn't see much of him last season so I don't know if it's a "known" thing that defences still do to him, but I wish I could find that article again.

Yeah he had a shocker that day alright.

Titans DT jurrell Casey signs a 4 year context extension 60 million with 40 guaranteed

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 21,828 Mod ✭✭✭✭helimachoptor

Got this off a titans site, so not sure if its legit:

Mallett] looked awful [filling] in for Joe Flacco (back) with the first team on Friday. He was intercepted at least five times and was nearly picked off two more times. On his last interception, Mallett threw his white towel in the air. His struggles were noticed by linebacker Terrell Suggs. "Hey Marty [Mornhinweg, offensive coordinator], tell Mallett to throw to the guys wearing the purple jerseys [the offense]," Suggs said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,003 ✭✭✭mikemac2

Yes that was reported by Espn

Here is one of the wobbly interceptions, the Ravens twitter account put it up

    https://twitter.com/Ravens/status/890995059625271297

Mallet is a two million salary for 2017 with no guaranteed money. Maybe they'll bring in competition but for now he still is number two

Colin Kaepernick made his bed and now he can lie in it. He went down the road of supporting divisive social movements like Black Lives Matter and wouldn't stand up for the flag during the anthem. He's either extremely poorly advised or is suffering from Kanye West or Bono levels of self-importance. I'd say he has a remote chance of every playing pro-football again.

There is a great interview with John Mara that essentially suggests that Kaep has been blackballed by the owners in order to avert a potential back-clash with fans.

That'll teach him to believe in things.

He is meant to get hired or not due to his skills at football. But hey this is the nfl - beat the crap out of someone half your size then come right on in. Make a political point (and he was not the only one) then go home.

Sorry this post does not stand up to the slightest levels of scrutiny. Heck let's see Brady get dumped for being friends with Trump (you want divisive there is no one more divisive in the states right now). I mean I don't honestly believe Brady should be stopped for that but if you want apply that logic...
