And that just about sums them up. Say no more.

You are so wrong they have never been rated by people their own age.

A good description of them from about 25 years back........https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60DK9iaifSA

Rubbish, they obviously had a big following back in "their day".

Personally, I have a lot of respect for them, but wouldn't consider myself a fan!

Most Irish people loath them. Why all the hype about them of late?

...U2 come from a time when most were still around and they never got a mention in those days. So perhaps they stand out a little now.,,,

In what alternative universe. In their day they were massive. There were all over the media in their day. First in Ireland then, UK then the US. For years they were heavily overplayed in the media.

Bono comes across as a bit of a wanker but U2 were a pretty innovative and decent band.

And to be fair to them, they've been making decent music for the bones of 30 years.

Personal tastes aside, anybody that categorically states that all their work has no objective critical merit whatsoever is just a student hipster tit.

I think they got really popular for a short time after about 1991 when all the other groups just seemed to all disappear and there wasnt much else around for a few years. I dont think Oasis got big until 1995.

As I said they played the Irish American thing well and there following was mainly there.

They dominated Irish music scene for years. Personally I was into other stuff, but U2 were massive in Ireland. Perhaps it was before your time.

TIL people still find puns amusing.

I'd love to be able to come up with a U2 related pun, but I can't think of One.

I don't mind them. I like some of their earlier stuff. And also Beautiful Day is what my dear old granny used to call "an absolute fucking banger of a tune".

Well I wouldn't call Echo and the Bunnymen a rock band first off and if anyone tells me they don't hear Bono in the vocals of 'The Killing Moon' they need a hearing aid.

In fact U2 would make a fantastic Echo and the Bunnymen tribute band.

The problem with that is U2 have changed their sound constantly. The Bunny men?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echo_%26_the_Bunnymen_discography

A lot of bands at that time these both started were Neo-psychedelia, Alternative rock.

Nah. I like a good few of their songs but bono can be a bit of a **** at times. But i won't lie. They have a good few tunes.

    Yup

An ideal U2 set would be this

    "Hello <wherever>

plays lots of very similar songs

    "Thank you" <wherever> "And goodnight"

There is no reason for pulpit at a concert. Bonio's voice is horrible when singing, having him sermon through the gig as well is just typical U2wank.

If herself was still here, we'd have to go tomorrow :(

There was a time around 1983, or maybe '84, when it was between U2 and Simple Minds as to who was going to rule the world of stadium rock. Most of the smart money was on Simple Minds....

The bunnymen were neo nothing. Alt rock defo. I'd agree that U2 have changed but its always been major shifts. The cowboy Joshua to the Fly etc.

Its not organic. Its planned and staged. Got the US with Tree ? Lets get the europeans with Achtung Baby, Zooropa etc.

Certainly not. They were one of the true bright sparks out of the horror 80s who made it globally . A traditional rock n roll band with great tunes.

Bono's political pontificating has undoubtedly driven many away over the years. His recent remarks about President Trump for instance were utterly cringeworthy (in which country did you make your millions you stupid arsehole)

As Noel Gallagher said, I'm a musician not a politician, I will not divide my audience by airing personal political views at live concerts.

Music and politics has always mixed since both involve humans, Noel Gallagher probably just has little or no interest in politics which is perfectly fine. I'm not much of a u2 fan though

I have honestly never gotten U2's popularity. They are the most ingeniously marketed band in history. Personally, I think they're "alright" and I can't say I know one person who I'd call a "really big fan" of theirs... it all just doesn't add up!

It's so nauseating that Noel Gallager has been made the infallible pope of rock by the likes of the NME. That attitude of "I know my place..." is sooo rock n' roll. That's the kind of sentiment that made the Bee Gees and Elton John look like dinosaurs in the late 1970s. Not surprising coming from a man whose musical ambition rarely extended beyond lifting reams straight from the chordbooks under his bed.

Was this the time when Queen were playing to the biggest ever stadiums? :)

I saw them in Slane in 2001 and it still stands as onee of the best gigs I was ever at. Not too into their more recent stuff but grew up listening to Achtung Baby and Zooropa. Their music brings back so many great memories for me. :)

Taking a break from concerts this year as I've shelled out a fortune recently but to those going, enjoy!

I'm not a fan really - if tickets to see them live came my way I wouldn't go - but I don't think they're shíte. They have recorded some decent music, though I think they've gone stale. That's not to say they won't surprise us again. Just because they're old doesn't mean they can't make music that's experimental or fresh again. I also dislike the assertion that just because they're old, they should feck off or that nobody under 40 could possibly like them.

They've also managed to keep releasing new music and to sell out arenas for decades now. That's a lot more than most of their contemporaries have managed. Many of those are now touring the 80s nostalgia circuit, performing songs they had hits with in 1983 or 1984. Their audiences mostly don't want to know about new albums or anything they recorded in 1991.

Having said that, I've been switching radio channels or ignoring podcasts about U2. I find the coverage is overkill any time they release a new album or play conversations here. But I accept that their music and concerts bring a lot of joy to people and that's what it's all about. It'll all be a dim memory in a week or two anyway.

I really have little opinion of U2 as a band. I like some of their songs. Not sure why they are so hated, although I grant the tax thing is annoying. Wrote decent songs (and probably some bad ones, I've not listened to their entire back catalogue, just happened to have the silver compilation growing up and picked up the gold one somewhere. Couldn't say which album each of the songs I like is from though.

They are one of Ireland's musical successes though and I do tend to get the impression that that really annoys people kinda just because, which is rather weird. Same thing happened with Westlife, Boyzone and the new one, Ed Sheeran. Irish band gets successful, Irish band picks up a following of people who really really hate them.

Is this a thing, or is this just a boards impression here?

    Is Ed Sheeran Irish?

Since when has Ed Sheeran been Irish? Born in Halifax to (according to Wiki) London born parents (paternal grandparents were Irish).

At best he's one quarter Irish.

I love people trying to deny their popularity as if it will actually make it true.

They've sold over 100 million records (one of the top 20 acts of all time) , are incredibly popular as a live band are popular all over the world and yet some people claim they aren't popular. They seem to have generated a load of critical praise for some of their albums as well.

Seen him do that years ago but it is so true and says it all.

But there are those who still think they are great, believe all the hype and think they are a great 'musical' band.

No rock or pop music is difficult to pay - Hendrix aside. The question is whether the band can write good songs and is good live, if you are going to see them.

Although I don't care about pop or rock these days I'd say they are pretty good at that.
