    Lol.
I was expecting someone to say grass...but jersey bull!!

There's a saying about horses...a good big one is always better than a good small one...
    IMO same goes for cows.

I'll send him over next week. Rearing to go already ;)

That yoke makes me feel nauseous.
    Does he come with stilts?

What age is he? What's the plan for him? Would you be better off getting rid as a calf?

    35.9 across the lot.

Have they been at that yield before with higher protein? Stage of lactation? Anything else in that diet that may effect the protein.? Have replacements the genetics for solids?

Ah yea. Pr always around 3.3 - 3.4.

Ah yea. Pr always around 3.3 - 3.4.

    Did anything change recently?

I'd say the protein is a bit low, it looks like there's less room there compared to energy supply. Maybe a kg extra of soy or rape meal?

If your getting that pr with that yield I'd say if you want to get higher you might have to do it through breeding. ... your on a tmr not grass based diet so most people on here won't be an expert in this Area.

OK Guys, question for the experts.

Cows indoor on full tmr of....
    11kgdm forage maize (31%dm 39% starch).
    3kgdm sorghum silage (25%dm 11.7%pr)
    5kgdm grass silage (27%dm 17.1%pr 81dmd).
    500g good hay.
    3.3kg maize crimp.
    3.5kg soya crimp.

    Solids 2.9pr (!), 4.3bf, milk urea 33.4.

I just can't figure why protein is so low. I've had two experts in to try and get to the bottom of this but no solutions.

Virtual case of wine to anyone that can solve this riddle.

Could overall diet be a bit steep with maize if you subbed out 4kgs of forage maize with extra silage, and drop out the sorghum and go in with lucerne if available it should solve your problems I'd reckon

Dropping the sorghum by 2kg and replacing it with 2kg lucerne was going to be the next move. They definitely need the maize to hold onto production I'd think.

5 months old. Kept as a teaser along with 3 others but looking at his grand mothers figures there this evening I might keep him as a bull.
She did 7300l last year and 623 kgs MS from about 800 kgs of meal

Their dangerous little b***s pure jersey bulls, get bold very quickly and can do you in a second with them being so small and nimble, worked at a place that ran 500 heifers with 15 jersey bulls in the middle of them would open your eyes to how lethal they are....

Ah know all about them. Have 2 this year. No issues yet. We put a ring and a length of chain on to keep them quiet

ANY trouble with the chain being caught in things always thought the chain made them madder for some reason, they only have to hold their head to the side, Saw a bull getting a terrible doing when he got the chain caught around an electric fence

No issues yet. But if that scenario happened me it would be straight for the wire cutters and cut the wire. Had a run in with a friesan teaser last year that wouldn't leave a paddock.

Happened to a bull in the ag college I was in. I was working there for the summer. Went for cows at 5.30 am, the noise of the bull was unreal, dont know how long he was caught on the wire, I turned off the fence first and then went for help, no mobile phones in those days. Put me off ever using a chain

Ask your two experts if there's enough UIP (Undegradable intake protein) in that diet.
High producing cows in a warm temperature environment especially need enough UIP.
Recommended %'s are in the link below.

    http://www.milkproduction.com/Library/Scientific-articles/Nutrition/Protein/

Other than there's a few studies into milk protein % drops in heat stressed cows which seems to effect the protein ( certain casein over another) more than fat in milk.
This is the latest study. Disregard the climate change paragraph.

How's your Scc by the way?

Nice set up. Any cost figures?
The Teagasc boys must be pulling their hair out, having preached so long against this type of set up and farmers not listening.

    Very nice!

But anyone else think those pig slats in the pit will be thrown out fairly soon?

All it'll be is just a mastitis bugs heaven underneath those slats.

At least with rubber mats if they're fitted down tight no slurry or sour milk can get underneath and it is washed on top of the mat.

The slats. How often will they be taken up and the floor washed underneath? ?

Training a new milker these last few days. A little brain power goes a long way.

    That's all

    2K is low.

See this poor fella in Yorkshire. Milking 200 cows with a 12 unit. 3 hours milking.
