I remember it being announced and previews in the press at the time.
They should have just released it.
While they, in the video, say that Capcom felt it did not do the franchise justice, it didn't stop them from publishing Resi 5,6 and Mercenaries!

Gorgeous machines :D I prefer the black/green combo, plus that model has the 6ft long controller chords too!

Famicom owners should get this little dongle :
    http://3dscapture.com/fdsstick/
    FDSStick
It's a Famicom Disk System (FDS) drive emulator.
Write games to FDSStick over USB, then connect to a FDS RAM adapter to play.
Contains 256Mbit internal flash. Enough space to hold every FDS game and more! Loads a built-in game menu on startup.
Push the button to change disk sides (once for side A, twice for side B, etc.) or hold to eject.
Read and write disks from an FDS drive with an adapter cable (not included).
Connect both sides of FDSStick to run games directly from a PC.
Game Doctor disk format is fully supported.
    Firmware is upgradable over USB.

    To paraphrase The Commitments,
Betcha Jeff Minter is sh1tting himself! (edit: He isn't)

Watching this with interest alright, a PC based system is a bit vague though.

Watching this with interest alright, a PC based system is a bit vague though.

Minter had his nethers kicked when he wanted to launch the excellent TxK on systems besides the Vita, Atari, or rather who ever is currently the owner of the logo, said that they had their own plans for the Tempest IP, as well as the other legacy Atari IP, and denied him use.
Not only that, but they refused to enter into negotiations to take their cut, as a licencee of the IP, and let TxK be launched on the various digital platforms.
So, finished versions of TxK are out there, on a HDD in a sheep/llama farm in Wales, and no one will ever be able to play them.
Now, I know we got the excellent Polybius instead, but Atari are @rseholes.
Minter stated he couldn't wait to see what they were going to do with Tempest, unlikely as it is to be very good.

    Link to the Article!
Nothing that Atari hs done with their legacy has been as good as the work Minter has done over the years, and failed systems!

    Jaguar, Tempest 2000
    Nuon :( Tempest 3000
    Vita TxK

Game journalism has gotten so bad these days. There's a lovely bit of revisionist history over on eurogamer about how crash bandicoot was a pioneer for 3D. Probably written by someone that grew up with a playstation only.

I was there and remember it felt old hat compared to Mario 64 which was released before it. And that was the common consensus at the time from anyone other than playstation focused publications.

It really annoys me as this will forever be on the Internet as a historical reference especially from a usually trustworthy publication like eurogamer.

Did you read the developer blogs linked in the article ? Very good (lengthy) insight into the development of the game series, regardless of our opinion of the game itself its worth the read.

It's pretty much the same as what was said in a previous retrogamer article from 2 years ago. Make no mistake, at the time the game was a technical marvel on the PS1 and mark cerny worked miracles on the system but the actual game felt old hat compared to Mario 64 or even jumping flash before it. Those games let go of the linear level design of previous games and fully embraced 3D exploration the way crash didn't.

Also I do b to think the first crash was even that stellar a platformer.

    Hmm.
Mario 64 was a set of open levels, cleverly adapted depending on the goal of the selected star at the outset, full of creative spark and ingenuity, beyond the Grass/Snow/Lava/Mech level trends.
Crash Bandicoot mixed it up a little.
    Crash ran into the screen.
Crash ran out of the screen.
On some occasions, Crash ran from side to side.
Such innovation... the hurts, the hurts!
Spyro, at least, tried to bring the 3D world into life, as did the sublime but easy Jumping Flash....

    Damn

Now I want to go home and play Jumping Flash again.
On a digital pad (only way to do it!!)

I'm lucky, I have the Jumping Flash trilogy, including the 3rd japan only title.
The maddestt hing about JF is that it was a launch title!
Quite a bold thing to do, produce a 3D platformer, with solutions to all sorts of 3D issues, like giving your robo-rabbit feet and the ability to look down, before anyone else.
Also, the first person view meant that there were no camera issues!

I recall bringing my PS with me on night duty, and when all my folk were fast asleep I popped the system onto the TV and finished JF in an hour or two, such a fun two hours though!
The second one is fairly short too.
I have yet to play through the third one.... must be about time!

It amazes me we suffered years of **** platforming in fps games until Metroid prime came along and borrowed the jumping flash system wholesale.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,734 ✭✭✭J_E

Jumping Flash 2 was one of the most brilliant action platformers on the PS1! Damn hard on later levels too.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,263 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

We'll seems that eurogamer article is getting chewed out in the comments.

I mentioned jumping flash and a guy replied saying he reviewed it back in the day and the Sony Reps were surprised how much he was enjoying it.

Atari must have already started marketing for their next console. They have released a few of their classics with a modern look, to play on their website. They recommend IE for an advert free experience, i used Firefox with Ublock, but could not get Combat to load. I may try again tomorrow.

The reporting on this is a bit misleading.
Heaven forbid the internet should be misleading!
Atari aren't Atari, that US hardware and software company that those of a certain age remember as being so important for two decades.
No, this is the rebranded Infogrames, the French games publisher, they bought up a slew of developers/publishers over their lifespan, from GT Interactive to Paradigm and Atari was one of their conquests.
They renamed the whole company after them and, though based in Lyon they maintain a subsidiary in New York.
But this company hasn't made anything other than plug and play toys since the 90s.
As of 2014 Atari consisted of 10 employees, total, keeping the lights on and selling Flashback consoles via licencees, by @tgames.

I did not realise that they had been bought up. I read about the new console and it never mentioned it. Made out that they were one and the same :O (shock).
I only played 3 of the games above, Yars revenge, Missile Command and Combat.
I prefer the old combat and Yars Revenge, but it is nice to see Yars Revenge with a modernised look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,729 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

Yar Revenge is excellent (original one anyway), fired it up recently on my emulation box to test out the 2600 setup and bam an hour later I'm still playing it without realising it :)

    The hummmmm...........
One of, if not my favourite game as a kid, before the 48k (even then i bought a US magazine that showed how to write a 'clone' in BASIC of it).
It took the guts of two weeks between School and other activities. In the end i was very unimpressed.
I went into where the Atari was stashed, dug it out and set it all back up again.
The Atari, unfortunately did not survive the 90's, as i went through a 'tear apart and see how it ticks' phase. :(
It lay in the same place for a while and then somebody threw it out. (It was around the same time i discovered underage drinking).

Sega are launching Sega Forever on Android tomorrow. Games across all their systems for free (ad supported). Individual games can be unlocked for €2.

Controller support, cloud saving, global leaderboards. I hope they do it right - this has the potential to be very cool.

Edit: Looks like the first 5 Sega Forever games have launched in the Philippines.

    Phantasy Star II (by SEGA)

    Hooray!
    Touch screen Sega games!
    Hooray for us all!!!
    Oh, wait......

You know who is going to sh1t the bed over this?
That Retro FB page, where they think it's just darn great to download every game available to a RPi and play it on the 60" LCD, with a PS3 controller, in 16:9....

I blocked that group. It turned into a **** show and was taking up my entire feed with **** like name a game that begins with S or name a game that has a church in it.

Current gen gaming and VR has me ruined. Havent played a retro gane properly in about 1 or 2 years!

Anyone else not playing retro as much?

I got farpoint and the aim controller yesterday and i must say its the most impressive gun peripheral I've used yet, well apart from visually! :pac:

Its what the guncon 3 should have been, the thumbsticks are really comfortable to use for movement, the tracking is awesome and its a joy to move around the world. Cant wait to play other titles like Arizona Sunshine and Dick Wilde with it.

I'm kinda rotating between modern & retro, modern & retro, modern & retro etc. Cleared Dead Space, cleared Contra 3, onto Dead Space 2 now....etc.

Will definitely get into VR soon, as much as I'd like to get a PSVR (there seems to be a ton of steady releases and support for it), I'm afraid I'd find the resolution too low & the screen door effect too high for my liking.

Been playing the **** out of Breath of the Wild. It really is one of the most incredible games I've ever played and ruined all open world games on me.

I've since finished it so I'm playing some NES stuff, trying to finally beat Super Mario Bros warpless and also some Etrian Odyssey 2 which is the most modern take on old school dungeon crawlers.

You should try it out first. I thought the same but when Dirt Rally was released i knew I had to get it. I think the immersion makes up for the lower graphical quality.

Sony done something with the RGB bits that make up the pixels that reduce the screen door a bit. Cant remember the technical jargon for them. And its meant to be the most comfortable of all 3 "premium" VR headsets.

Apparently the Sega Forever games are using Unity as middleware and perform pretty poorly. They get particularly jittery when receiving notifications. They were going to use RetroArch but Sega wanted RetroArch to switch from GPL to MIT for licensing (essentially giving up all rights) and RetroArch didn't want to do that.

    Sega screwed up again.
