Jaysus, good job it wasn't a big AAA game, I've gotten so used to cable that I wouldn't even flinch at a 30gb download. I expect that's probably my "privelige" talking :p

I was all excited about Rocket League too at first, but then I played a bit online and saw the skill curve and thought "naaa..." But it gets busted out for couch coop every now and then.
Yeah, 6GB isn't huge on my 30Mb connection, but it's enough of a deterrent for me to not bother on a game I was getting sick of :)

There's something about sinking a lot of time into MP games... I look at my backlog and think I'm wasting my time somehow.

After reading some of The Witcher books, I've decided to start 3 again on death march and gonna try do everything this time. I've forgotten how good it is. Even the contracts have a bit of story to them. I didn't do any of them before.

When I started my current playthrough I tried Death March and enemy level scaling.

It's better except you become completely incapable of taking on packs of wild dogs, who become the most dangerous enemy in the game.
You can take on big enemies 15 levels higher than you by avoiding their attacks and wearing them down, but it's really difficult to avoid all damage from dogs and wolves.
Because of that I decided to turn it off.

Now I'm level 21 and after getting tired of massacring everything I turned it back on. Thankfully there's no dogs on Skellige. Again, the wolves are the most dangerous enemies around but I can take a few hits now and my potions are of a level now that I can beat them through attrition.

I don't like the idea of level scaling tbh. I think I have it off. I rarely overpower myself though as I tend to rush through single player games. This time might be different though.

Can you go back to White Orchard after you meet the emperor?

I just had a gander. Yes. Youll be able to pick up any loot or visit any places of power (there's quite a few in White Orchard - as many as all of Skellige or the main area of Novigrad/Velen).

I don't know will you be able to finish all the quests though.
If you can't it'll probably have told you you failed them after you leave White Orchard.

Random pointer - something I noticed was that doing Triss's quest line in Novigrad prevents you completing a few quests - if you're looking to 100% it or near enough, don't do anything Triss related until you've finished all the quests for Radovid, Zoltan, Dandelion, Sigi Reuven, or pretty much any others.

On level scaling, one thing I would say where the Witcher fell short is in power creep and game balance as the game goes on.
It's hard in a game where your power level rises non-linearly.
Death March is tricky enough early doors even without level-scaling, but it becomes trivially easy from about level 20 onwards by which time it'll take lots of quick enemies 10 levels higher than you to pose any threat.
Level scaling alleviates some of that. It's still not terribly difficult mind you, but enough for combat to be satisfying.

Another thing might be to avoid Witcher gear for as long as possible. It's seriously overpowered. There's not a great selection of craftable loot after level 15 or so, so I've felt pressured into getting some rather fetching Ursine School gear.

An oldie for sure, but just finished Dead Space there (had finished it a good few years back, just decided to revisit in order to acquaint myself with a controller instead of kb/m for gaming these days). Thoroughly enjoyed it I have to say, am looking forward to the sequel which I've never played (though loses a lot of the horror elements I gather?)

It's very blue from what I recall. They geared towards creepier enemies rather than tense confrontations.

There's a lot more "jesus what the hell is that?" but less tension overall, very few of the areas are frightening, you're not as afraid to travel and explore.

    Still recommend though.

The third one is when the horror goes off the rails, I can't recall a single new enemy, unless you count humans. Just bright and boring in comparison to the shadows of the first.

I've been playing DmC Devil May Cry (4 years later), and it still looks nice and the bonus is it runs smooth on modern hardware. A fun game, downside being the metal music and a little OTT on the anxt, but not that annoying. Pity the DLC title was a bit spoilery. Just about to start that.
Compared with Metal Gear Rising, this game is 10/10, I just didn't get on with MGR.
And unlike Darksiders this game didn't drag on for too long or add in annoying portal puzzles :P

    @eyerer

I still play DMC 3 & 4. I'll never touch DmC. Liked MGR but prob wouldn't go back to it anytime soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

This is the first DmC I've played properly, I'm a bit curious about DMC 4 since it's recent enough too. It's strange seeing the vast number of enemies in it's screen shots though.. Maybe I need to take a look at some gameplay footage :)
I heard recently a new DMC might be announced too.

Keep talking and nobody explodes. I think this game may just end up teaching me morse code. :o
    Great little coop game.

If you like DmC because it runs smooth then definitely try DMC4. Its performance was amazing when it released and it still is today. Looks gorgeous, too and the gameplay is miles ahead of DmC. LDK mode can spawn tons of enemies to get Crazy with ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

Ah I didn't realize the screenshot I saw was LDK mode, I was thinking the core gameplay was much different with so many enemies :O lol. The special edition looks pretty good

Just finished Shadow of Mordor. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Put 37 hours into it and am at 94% completion, so want to go back for the 100%. I rarely do that with games as once I finish the main story, I feck off.

No idea what to play next. Installed some previous steam list purchases last night (Kerbal, Outcast 1.1) but also like the idea of a good actioney game too. Have both Metro reduxes in my list but I played rage recently, so another humans and mutants game might be a bit too soon.

Dying Light: took me a good while to get into this game for some reason but almost complete. Have the Following DLC to playthrough as well but think I will take a break.

Wonderboy: The dragons trap. could not resist picking this up when it was released last week. Very nice remake

Think ill boot up the Dead Space games next, seem to remember starting the fist one and not getting very far. Have 2 and 3 in my library never installed.

I'm as far as Chapter 3 now in Dead Space 2, & would have to agree with you. The setting is nowhere near as creepy, the tension isn't there, and you feel far less 'alone' than you did in the first one. Still enjoyable thus far, but definitely more action based than creepy unfortunately

Is it the first or the second or maybe both(I forget) the further you get into the game the harder it gets.

Like you do be going along and you finally got used to the enemy and how to kill them and then suddenly a new type that is harder to kill starts appearing and it is the same throughout the whole game. Still an enjoyable game but I was always glad it was finished after playing them. Still played all three of them even though it was kinda a slog.

I think that's the second one, the first one just forced faster reactions against more enemies as the game went on iirc.

I really enjoyed the second game, a Dark Souls v Dark Souls 2 argument for me. Both sequels were great but just had too much to live up to.

The third is an absolute slog, as you've said.

Played a bit of FSX myself, it's pretty decent though I play with an xbox controller and it's not as good, if you really get into it I think having the flight controls would hugely improve the experience.

I also found I couldn't get the cockpit to look decent, the game doesn't really take advantage of higher resolutions (understandable given it's age).

The default aircraft cockpits aren't great, that's for sure. But you should see the virtual cockpits of some add-ons. Works of art in some cases.

Watch out for stuff by Carenado and Alabeo, though. They have a reputation for gorgeous-looking aircraft but with mediocre systems modelling and bugs that often don't get fixed.

What add-ons do you recommend storker? And where do you get them from?

Here are (what I consider to be) the best aircraft in my own virtual hangar, with links to their vendors:

Piper J-2 Cub and Cessna C172R Skyhawk. (A2A Simulations)
    Beechcraft Baron B55 (Milviz)
Beechcraft Duke B60, Beechcraft Turbine Duke and Lancair Legacy (RealAir*)
    Boeing 737-800 NGX (PMDG)
    Antonov An-2 Colt (SibWings Labs)
Boeing 757-200, BAe 146/Avro RJ (Quality Wings)
Boeing 737-200, Boeing 737-500 (Captain Sim)
    Beechcraft King Air B200, Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander (Flight1 Software)
de Havilland Chipmunk, Fokker F-27 (Just Flight)
    Fairchild-Swearingen Metroliner III (RAZBAM Sims)
    Bombardier Dash-8 Q400 (Majestic Software)
Piper PA-42 Cheyenne, PBY Catalina, de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter, Airbus A318/19/20/21 (Aerosoft)

For scenery I use mostly Orbx. They have a global a texture replacement product that transforms default scenery, and also do their own specific scenery regions, mostly in the western US. I'm not mad about the company, but their products are superb, and they do generous discounts a couple of times a year. In the past I have also used Flight1 for scenery Europe, US, Canada, Alaska and had no complaints. Their product can also work in conjunction with Orbx, because of the way FSX scenery is layered. If photoscenery is your thing, I think MegaScenery Earth is the biggest player.

For weather, I use Active Sky Next. For me the killer features here are ridge lift/sink, thermals, microbursts and wake turbulence. And of course it's a great weather-generating engine.

The other must have for me is some kind of view-management system for looking round the cockpit. I've used Ez-Dok in the past, and am currently using Opus FSX. There's also a relatively new contender in ChasePlane, but I don't know much about it yet. If you already have it, FSX and P3D also support TrackIR.

*Regarding RealAir, their products are currently unavailable due to the retirement of the two developers, but there is a chance that their they will reappear some time in the future under another vendor.

Hope this helps. This is a big subject, and I've really only scraped the surface. If you need to know more, pop a question in the Virtual Flying forum , as I don't want to hijack this thread. Or else head over to Mutley's Hangar, Flightsim, or Avsim and search, browse or post a question on their forums. Mutley's Hangar is probably the most friendly but is also the smallest. AVSIM is the biggest, but can be a cranky place at times.

    Happy flying! :)

Playing F1 2015 a bit, & I can't help but think you really need a wheel to enjoy these games properly.

I know the feeling I had the official Xbox 360 forcefeedback wheel when i was using the Xbox 360 and games do play better with the wheel but even though I had a wheel I was always thinking it would be so much better with a gear stick rather than the flappy paddles.

Even if you got a full set of steering wheel and gearstick the next thing on your mind is it would work so much better if I had a proper seat and frame to hold everything.

So long story short it is quite expensive to get a full setup to play the game as intended.

True, & even at that I wouldn't have the space for a proper sim setup. I am however, thinking of picking up one of these at some stage - https://www.amazon.co.uk/GT-Omega-Steering-suitable-LOGITECH/dp/B0178K5T6E/ref=pd_bxgy_147_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MBMK5FPC0PFRGYMXKDTF

Any thoughts on them (combined with a G920 obviously)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,617 ✭✭✭Revoker88

I bought a G29 recently and bought a wheelstand pro deluxe to mount it on. Total cost was €320. Thats for wheel/pedals,gearstick and the stand. Very neat little setup that folds away neatly.

If you could buy that setup secondhand im sure you could get quite a reasonable price.

Not top end gear, you could spend as much as you like on the enthusiast racing gear, but nice setup for someone like me whos not a mad sim head and more casual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

I was thinking of getting a wheel setup about 6 months ago but I held out and the bug has passed mostly.
I wonder is it worth the money and does it end up taking the fun away from the games..

Sorry I wouldn't know much about them. Seems decent though for the price.

Have one of those chairs on my Amazon Wishlist too. Few more months and it's going into my basket. They get good reviews.

I had my eye on a playseat challenge and a Logitech G29.
Sim gear is the same as audio equipment, some people have so much money to spend on hobbies they buy pro grade stuff and talk about decent stuff like it's crap. £200 is a lot of money to me ;)

Guild Wars 2,base game. Bought it an age ago but hadnt played it. Installed it the other night for a quick go,got to level 11 in the one session. Felt like i was playing for a good while.

Ive a question though, where does GW2 stand in 2017 pecking order for MMO's?

Ive recently found myself wating to try the genre but couldnt decide on a game. Tried ESO during free week and trying GW2 now. Found ESO to be meh but find guild wars is holding my attention. Before i commit though is there any other MMO's i should be looking at?
