I can't understand why Armstrong would be picked over McHugh.

He's no Comer where his influence from play trumps the free taking.

McHugh is one of the best free takers in the country based on the league.

Its far more important than hurling where 3/4 lads will still get to 80% easily.

If you wanted to see just one example of the importance of a free taker... look at Armagh and Down.
Goalies and all sorts booting wide after wide.

I don't have any problem with most of the forwards playing ahead of McHugh , but I'd easily take a dead eye ground kicker instead of my 6th choice attacker.

Without Sice there(only good from hand distance anyway) it looks like Comer/Walsh/Armstrong on the frees and none of them have proven to be above average free takers.

Think putting Army in over Cummins is wrong myself. Hope it doesn't backfire on big Kevin. Cummins stayed loyal to the team and was standout last year, picking up an all star nomination. Bringing Army out of retirement is a brave call. Sends out the wrong signal to me.... we shall see.

I've never gone along with the thought that older lads shouldn't be on panels, give youth a chance, build for the future etc.
Armstrong I thought linked up very well in the last 2 games against Kildare.
In a hypothetical situation if there happened to be a 35 year old shooting the lights out on the club scene, and was remarkably fit enough for 70 mins at intercounty level, he should be playing for Galway, banging over points and helping them to win an all ireland.
Armstrong is obviously doing better in matches and training than other lads so if he's good enough, he plays.

Back in January, I posted a potential Galway forward line for summer. I included Armstrong and it got quite a reaction here. I put him in based on his club form last year. He was arguably best forward in Galway club championship last year.

However, his early league form was very poor and he lost his place after the Fermanagh game. I thought he was finished then. Injuries meant he came back into the team towards the end of the league - think it was the Down match. Played well in that game but nothing spectacular. So I was surprised when he started league final. He was excellent in the final, he played a very difficult role that day as the only Galway player that played in front of the ball.

I'm still not convinced he'll start on Sunday though. He's probably the most likely not to start. I'd prefer his role to be coming on to 'steady the ship' rather than starting.

Interesting how peoples opinions change over time! You're definitely more in tune with the club scene then I am.
Armstrong was a very good link man in the league final. Maybe they see him as that, it might be the winning and losing of the game.
If he's a sub and the forwards don't fire as a unit, the game could be over as a contest by the time he could be introduced.
Ah we'll see. I do worry about frees from 40 yards out. Mchugh is limited from play but could nail frees. Mayo will be hauling down walsh and daly out around that distance I reckon. Worth the risk. Comer walsh or Armstrong won't be 100% on the frees. Then again, it'd be a huge day for mchugh and pressure is always a factor for free takers, so he mightn't be dead on all of the time.

Armstrong had a poor enough league campaign overall. I know there were plenty of calls to replace him during the league. However he saved his best game by far for the final. He really had an excellent final where his movement dragged the Kildare defenders all over the shop.

I'm still a bit skeptical about what he can do at this stage against top intercounty defenders but I guess we'll find out.

its curious that Corofin have just 1 starter considering their dominance at club level.

I guess Sice, Farragher, Lundy can't be too far off that team

Hoping to be up there in plenty of time for the under 17s game.Any recommendations on a good place to park to beat the traffic out to the Headford road post the game.

I know it's quite a traipse but is there any issues with parking in Lidl??

Parking is not really the issue. Its getting out of there is the problem. Its a complete hole of a place to get out of. You would be down from CP faster than getting out of Galway and that is saying something

To be honest salthill has only a few roads to it so if you want to beat traffic to the headford road you'd have to leave the game 10 mins early and be parked around the stadium.
If you park a 20 minute walk away by the time you get to your car, thousands will be in their cars making their way out of salthill.

You should aim to park somewhere off Taylor's hill and you'd make your way across town a bit quicker from there I think. I'd avoid the quincentennial. Town is never too bad after a match.

No I know that but I want to park far enough way that I can be a bit further out from the epicentre of the traffic chaos. Hence thoughts of Lidl.

Thanks I might go the town route and avoid quincentennial. Is there any issues with parking somewhere off Taylor's Hill, clamping or residents?

Not really. Taylor's hill road isn't a place you can park really but the estates off that road, towards the stadium, are normally grand for parking in.
Hopefully it'll be that way tomorrow.
Sometimes certain roads have the small yellow no parking cones. They can be randomly positioned so I don't know is it the guards or residents doing it. Pisses me off in a big way. Seems like it's residents when you see they're thrown along the front wall of certain houses, and not the neighbours.
They should people park on any road for the few days that's in it. Obviously any cars parked in gateways should be towed.

To answer your question clamping shouldn't happen unless you park where there's no parking signs. If a kerb is free, work away.

I'm looking forward to the match tomorrow and it's nice to have a bit of anticipation back for Galway-Mayo. The build up to last year's match was all about how much would Mayo win by and while they are still favourites for tomorrow most people and pundits seems to thing it could be a solid contest. Which would be nice.

My fear is that Mayo's need for a win tomorrow is simply greater than Galways.

Yeah it is. A defeat for Mayo could be the start of the end for the current Mayo team. A defeat for Galway isn't that big a deal - they can still get to an AI quarter final. Just feels like there's more at stake for Mayo.

There's meant to be park and rides tomorrow but I don't know for sure will it be at the Racecourse or whatever.

If you go through Taylors Hill-Claddagh-Eyre Square-Tuam Road it's probably the least slow option and even then it's still gonna be mental if you go straight after the match.

Best bet is to have a bite to eat in Salthill/watch the Austria match and give it an hour or so to clear out.

Wherever you park make sure to do a half decent job because they were handing out fines like no tomorrow in 2013.

Well Wexford have opened up the hurling this year if Offaly are dispatched in Portlaoise next Sunday the Leinster final will be the most anticipated in years.

If you park in the city centre how long would it take to walk to the stadium? Best of luck tomorrow folks. Looking forward to a battle!

It'd take a good 30 minutes walk tbh. If you go to the AIB building at the bottom corner of Eyre Square there'll be buses stopping very near the stadium if not right outside it.

I'd be wary of Wexford. Galway owe them a beating after that turnaround in the league but they are dogged and physical.
They did win a lot of scrappy ball on the ground. I think Galways physicality might be negated a bit by them.
In saying that, Wexford were throwing that match away tonight and if Kilkenny weren't as sloppy in their passing they would have won. Galway should plonk one of the Joes in full forward for the first 10 minutes and get that Wexford full back booked. He was a disaster tonight.
Jesus I'll be sick if we don't win Leinster, especially so when Davy fitz is over the opposition.
And I'm not even entertaining Offaly potentially beating Galway. It won't happen.

Wexford are decent but I certainly wouldn't fear them. Dodgy full backline and goalie and they don't seem to have huge scoring power up front.

In fairness they are well organise, won mountains of dirty ball and were reasonably efficient with the chances they got. And in Lee Chin they have a truly top class hurler, rarely have I seen one player have so much influence on a game. Gets on so much ball and uses it so well, we'll need a plan to try curb his influence anyway.

whats the weather forecast for tomorrow? would a man need to bring a raincoat??!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

Bring a hood for sure. It's meant to be cloudy for the first game and rainy for the start of the seniors. More than likely windy throughout both.

It's blowing an awful gale in Galway city at the moment. I can only imagine salthill will be pretty bad for the match. Should mean a lot of hand passing and a poor spectacle. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Short kickouts weather. Clarke and Lavelle will be under big pressure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,726 ✭✭✭Robson99

    Hurling really opened up nown.
Could have a run in of Offaly, Wexford, Clare and Waterford. Surely our best chance in years.

Well that will suit Mayo then as we generally concede kick outs to teams and boot it aimlessly long.

It's pretty bad here alright. At the very least there'll be a gale, at worst we'll have heavy rain on top.
It rained for 5mins a small while ago, please god that's the end of it as two matches in the rain will be hard taken.

Bloody disaster when you think of the last few weeks that we couldn't just get even an average day.

Waterford won't give two fcuks against us had they and us got to the final in 15 they would and still seriously fancy there chances against us

Can't see us losing to Offaly even if they cause us problems and Wexford in the final we owe them after gifting them a win in the league, we have the forwards to cause them problems

A Waterford team beaten out the gate in the Munster final last year and who were unable to beat a poor kk team when given every chance in semi final??
