Would you stop a hijacker on board your flight?

    Given the recent attacks in London with all these suicide bombers being attacked by a Millwan while passengers on a recent Malaysian flight to Melbourne tackled a man attempting to hijack a flight, I'm imagining a scenario closer to home;

If you were on an early morning flight from Dublin to London, Amsterdam, New York etc.. and three guys got up and tried to hijack the aircraft, would you be the 'hero' and try to tackle/beat them to death? There was a case of passengers on a Chinese flight in 2012 who did just that.

I'm a bit skeptical cause we Irish are stereotype for having a very lax system and being friendly to everyone. Do you think this extends towards terrorists? A

There's a poll so it'd be interesting to see what gender and your response is.

Would you stop a hijacker on board your flight? 120 votes

Yes, I'm a man and I would intervene if a hijacker was on my plane

If the alternative is sitting there meekly while the plane is used as a missile for some busy city killing everyone on board anyway, what have you go to lose?

I'd use an airline bread roll to batter them to death.

people who live in posh south Dublin. The hijackers have got nothing on those rough guys and gals from the country and the North of the city.

Defo, I've seen enough Die Hard and Fr. Ted to know how to get downstairs in the plane and do some magic to stop them controlling the plane.

I'd walk up to the biggest guy and ask him if he's a terrorist. If he says yes then I'd kick him in the nuts. Obviously this would provoke a reaction so I'd lamp him into the side of the head knocking him out cold. With that his friends would set about me whereupon I'd dispatch the first one with a vicious headbutt before elbowing the third guy across the jaw. I'd then systematically kick all three of them to death before ordering a brandy, some beers, peanuts and a model of the plane from the inflight magazine.

How am I supposed to do a flying roundhouse kick on a plane?

The world trade centre hijackings changed the game somewhat.

Up till then if someone was hijacking a plane, it was because they wanted to get somewhere, or they wanted some demands met, or perhaps they even wanted to steal a plane. Basically the hijacker wanted to live and didn't specifically want anyone on board to die.

So the prevailing wisdom was to stay calm, talk him down, land somewhere and see how it pans out. If you were a passenger on a hijacked plane, you were in a precarious position, but leaping out of your seat to be a hero was the road most likely to lead to death for you and everyone else on the flight.

This was in fact why nobody seemingly attempted to stop the hijackers in September 2001. The passengers on flight 93 did, but only after they heard the other planes had been crashed deliberately.

Now of course the prevailing wisdom is to go berserk on a hijacker because you're going to die if you don't.

I'm a very, very, small female person and a devout coward.

Other than those factors, I've no real clear picture of how my tackling a hijacker would look.

Some stereotypical English bad guy hijacks? not sure, depends on detail.

Some Hans Gruber german? Same as above

    Some scots? same

    Some irish? same

    Some American? Same

Some middle-eastern looking dude? In this day and age, I think you'd be fighting through the stampeding crowds to all tear him asunder.

And that says a lot when you think about it. We're all the same, pfft.

Wouldn't have a choice tbh....... It would be instinctive for me to disarm anyone putting innocent civilians' lives in danger.

Unless they were bigger than me or armed with guns, or had something sharp maybe, or heavy and blunt.. I'd rather not get hurt you see, as I already have a bad back and if I turn my neck too quick sometimes that can hurt too.. my osteopath has said...well, that's not important.. point is I'd like to help but just think maybe it would better if someone else did is all.
