Up till then if someone was hijacking a plane, it was because they wanted to get somewhere, or they wanted some demands met, or perhaps they even wanted to steal a plane. Basically the hijacker wanted to live and didn't specifically want anyone on board to die. So the prevailing wisdom was to stay calm, talk him down, land somewhere and see how it pans out. If you were a passenger on a hijacked plane, you were in a precarious position, but leaping out of your seat to be a hero was the road most likely to lead to death for you and everyone else on the flight. This was in fact why nobody seemingly attempted to stop the hijackers in September 2001. The passengers on flight 93 did, but only after they heard the other planes had been crashed deliberately. Now of course the prevailing wisdom is to go berserk on a hijacker because you're going to die if you don't.
